Just sold our house for a sweet bundle ;) and we plan on moving to Winnipeg in early December. North Kildonan area, I was just wondering if anyone has high speed in this area and can recommend one over the other?

MTS's website doesnt really post speeds, but I am guessing they cannot compete with shaw, alhtough I would like to hear from some locals. Also, is there any high speed adsl/xdsl etc and at what costs/where.

Thx in advance!

I might be a bit offtopic, but that's really cool moving from NWT to Winnipeg, it's a big change, different places too. Hope you'll enjoy ;)

Also, have you Googled up results for information on speeds for MTS or no?

On DSL Reports, MTS is listed as "smooth-ride" meaning good ;)

DSL is way faster, or at least from my experience. Plus, it's more secure since you can log on and off, unlike cable.

In my experience, MTS' DSL connection is a lot slower than even regular Shaw cable. That said, if you're going to just be doing regular internet stuff (email, surfing, listeing to streaming music, watching steaming video, etc) it is not going to make one lick of difference. If you are going to be doing a lot of heavy downloading of large music videoes or whatever and you are pretty picky about faster speeds, go with Shaw. At least, that's how it is for me.

Also, I think MTS will probably give you a better package deal for phone/internet/TV than Shaw will (a better price). I'm not sure if MTS TV has HD television channels yet (if that happens), so that's something to keep in mind. When you get here, call up both and see who offers you the best package.

huh?
If you want to "log off" you unplug your cable modem. Why would you want to though? If your PC is off it makes no difference. If your PC is on and you don't want to be online, use a software firewall and shut down all traffic, or unplug the LAN cable.

as for Shaw Extreme-I I'm not in Winnipeg but I upgraded to Extreme-I and I am quite happy with it in my area anyways. 10,000+ with any online speeds tests I've tried.

Sweet bro, for sure! I think and hope we are going to be driving out around Nov 25th and visiting family on the way down. New posession date is Dec 1.

From my experience, MTS will be slightly slower compared to Shaw, but it is uncapped. Shaw will send email notices (and possibly cut your account off) if your up/down rates severely exceed that of their 'typically' customer.

If you're just surfing and playing games, you'll have no worries. If you do any heavy newsgroups/binaries/BT, well, I would suggest mts. By heavy, I would say anywhere from 1gig+ a day. :P

heh thx!

Ummm, I thought shaw extreme was good for 60 or 100 gigs a month?

If uncapped I would average about 300 gigs a month easily....

yeah thats what they told me, 100G... and they won't put a modem counter on your account unless you severely go over the 100G. I've had it since june/july and no counter yet......and I download...lol

Well I can handle 100 gigs... currently I pay $70 a month for 10 gigs, at a pathetic 4mb connection.... 256 up

lol

hey kakarot.

that sounds pretty sweet that you are moving to winnipeg. i also live in winnipeg. i have been on mts and shaw, i currently have shaw high speed. i havent really had any problems with it, I have also downloaded around 10 gigs in about 2 weeks and they havent said anything to me.

I would say go with shaw if thats what you want.

I've lived in a couple cities in Manitoba and the cable internet was always faster than MTS, although it was a small difference at times. I sent Shaw an e-mail a while back asking what their caps are, they replied there are no hard caps but 40 GB down and 20 GB up per month may warrant an e-mail from them.

I think I will go shaw exteme, says 100 gig cap. As long as my ping is playable during peak hours... that is all I care about! Yea it is very sweet, a long 20 years up here!

MTS has been steadily improving their service and are probably consistantly faster than Shaw.

I get up to about 4100 Kbps down and 700 Kbps up on MTS regular high speed, measured from a speed test server in Brandon. Not sure what Shaw speeds are like these days.

lol, I think the confusion here lies in the fact the Bell Canada (primary eastern DSL provider) uses PPPoE, where as Telus uses standard DHCP. With PPPoE, you log on and off much like an old dialup connection (hence the PPP part of the acronym). Spot on comment though. Security has nothing to do with logging off and on. Use a firewall and AV software and you'll be fine. I know to many of us this advice seems redundant, but I've ran into MANY users who use neither piece of software and then wonder why they have to pay $150 every month to get their computer fixed.
