My sister and I grew up pretty well adjusted, and our parents never had a baby monitor.
Whats with the video?
Are u that paranoid?
Sorry baby, we need to leave the light on cuz we couldn't afford the monitor with night vision.

well...with the need for 2 incomes, and 1 person working from home a baby monitor can be very effective in monitoring the baby throughout the day to esure that the baby is well at all times, while in the office, which is in the basement.

Just ignore the snide comments...it's kinda ridiculous to be bashing people when they are asking for help. That's like saying why the heck are you on the Internet? Our parents grew up fine without it :P
That being said, my wife and I are also shopping for our coming baby and decided the price point is just way too high for the video monitor. It's at least a $100 for one of those. I would think in your situation, it would just be as effective having a pack and play in your work area that you can keep an eye on the baby. The video quality is not top notch at all either.
Where are you located? Many stores carry them, the brands I see most often are Summer Infant and Safety 1st, so I am assuming they are pretty good. For online purchases, there is babies r us (aka toys r us) and sears.ca.
