Got an older PC I want to format (2000 windows on it in dual-boot set-up with an XP Home option)...but I'm not able to get to the boot order screen?

My mobo's ps2 port doesn't work, and so my keyboard is plugged via USB.

any ideas?

Are you 100% certain that the PS/2 port is dead? Make sure you're using a PS/2 keyboard - not a USB keyboard + adapter. Also check to see if you're using the right port.

If it is dead you're in trouble - because there is a BIOS setting (USB Legacy Support) that you need to enable to get the keyboard working during POST. I don't see a way to get into the bios without a working keyboard....

OUCH...what a diss.

Yes right port. I'll dig on Monday to see if there's a ps2 keyboard at work to test with. When we bought this the guy said it doesn't work....so if so...no luck?

Try plugging the keyboard into the ps/2 mouse port.

Try plugging the keyboard into the ps/2 mouse port.

I did genius. no response at all. With XP upNrunning...no keyboard functionality...if I restart, same result.

Depends on the mainboard. Some will recognize a keyboard or mouse in either of the ps/2 ports and some will not. So both ps/2 ports are dead then? Try clearing the cmos. It should reset the boot order and may enable the usb legacy support (if any). You may run into another problem though. If the ps/2 ports are dead and there is no usb legacy support then how do you install windows when the usb driver isn't yet loaded?

You could probably get a CMOS RAM dump then find some software utility to edit that dump of the CMOS RAM and then write it back to the CMOS RAM. I remember there was a utility that can dump the CMOS RAM for you (escapes me at the moment). But I havent personally seen a utility that edits the CMOS RAM dump, you may be out of luck. :(

get a usb to ps/2 converter and use the usb keyboard. most, if all usb keyboards come with it, well the logitech ones do at least. its usually green in colour if that helps. get into the bios and turn on usb legacy, some bios also have do not stop the loading of the bios of no ps/2 is detected.
