yup. Staples is trying to retire the good old 5-digit code in favour of individual 16-digit one-time-use coupon codes because of "fraudulent" use of the 5-digit ones. yup. Staples is trying to retire the good old 5-digit code in favour of individual 16-digit one-time-use coupon codes because of "fraudulent" use of the 5-digit ones. I bet you they are tracking the individual codes and are noticing that they are not being used on the account that they are issued for

They're really getting on my nerves, and I'll be sure to never buy anything from them without a heavy discount. If they don't want to honour coupons, they shouldn't give them out.

Thanks, I just used that 5 digit code and it worked. They still have $280 as online price of the 80GB iPod for my postal code. But I entered in a Calgary postal code and the price dropped to $260. Oh... and I was talking to an online sales rep and he said they couldn't offer the in-store price because their costs are higher. So I asked if I could PM the in-store price and he said yes... haha. So they won't sell it to me for $260, but they WILL sell it to me for $258. Anyway it was only $240 after the coupon was applied so no point in haggling for that extra $2 :cheesygri. Free shipping within Canada, so it shouldn't matter what store I ordered from... right? They'd be stupid to ship it from Calgary anyway. Then again, they'd also be stupid to hassle their potential customers, but that didn't seem to stop them.

The key to use those 5-digits coupon in store is to get the STORE MANAGER instead of regular sales at the cashier, the store manager needs to OVERRIDE the system to get it work.


pretty sure you don't have to get a mgr to override a coupon code... unless the coupon's not working or sth...

because after the first coupo, the cart value does no longer apply to the second coupon. IE if you have two 20off200, and you are buying a $201 product. Do the math:cheesygri

My math goes like this

Example: Item price = $376 - $200 coupon leaves $176 left over enabling you to use the $175 coupon because the remaining amount after the $200 coupon is applied is greater than the $175 coupon ($176 in this case) thus allowing you to use the $175 coupon.

If the item total was say $374 and you applied the $200 off coupon you would be left with $174 making the $30 off $175 ineligible because the $174 remaining after applying the $200 coupon is not over the $175 limit of the 2nd coupon you are trying to apply.This is probably as clear as mud due to my poor explanation but I hope you get what I am trying to say....even though I didn't explain it very well.:lol: Hope this helps a little.

well, if you add 1 coupon to cart, and the coupon shows up, but if you try adding a 2nd coupon to cart, and the $XX coupon isn't discounted at checkout, the checkout should say sth along the lines of "you have not met the requirements in order to use coupon XXXXX ..." which means you'll have to have a greater subtotal before the coupon is applied.

I don't think it means you get an email right away but that once its fully processed you should get the email. I'm not sure though 'cause I orderd with the coupon as well and it was excepted. This is the first time I've ever ordered from Staples.

RFD has taught me that when an error like this presents itself, you can't hem and haw over it. You have to jump on it and get in before the RFD effect takes over.

I ordered before 6 pm yesterday. I got the normal confirmation e-mail. If I go to the website under my order history, I see the whole order(including discount). I haven't received an e-mail or a call indicating that the order is cancelled or will be charged at the higher(no coupon) rate.

the 16 digit coupons clearly say "On-Line only", so I understand that they won't work in stores. The 5-digit ones are also supposed to be on-line only, but they can work in the stores. However staff are not supposed to accept them there. Just try it and see what happens.

I wasn't so lucky. It turned out that two of my items became OOS by the morning (STOOPLES!), one of which being packing tape (LAME! STOOPLES!) and so the email said my order was put on hold and that I could call in to choose a substitute. His complaint was that all Staples customers got that $100 coupon at the same time and orders tripled for a short period. They had to get extra delivery trucks and manpower to just handle the load.
Maybe it was the RFD effect then.:D
With a $100 coupon I can see any merchant running out of stock quickly - everyone is looking for a deal nowadays and if the deal is good enough, buy things one doesn't really need.

And another thing is that eventhough there is an expiry date on coupons, you "may" still be able to use it past that date, so it's a GOOD thing that the coupons aren't taken out eventhough it says it's expired. Just try the coupon and if it doesn't work then don't use it.

I'm not any where near Resilient's outrage at the currency of this thread, more along the gratitude of Jameslinux, but I have wondered if we can improve on the situation, not just for this thread, but for any popular recurring threads.



To that end, I've posted a suggestion (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=527392)to allow for multiple editors to a thread. This would let an OP assign trusted posters to edit his or her thread- many hands make light work.

Some safeguards could be to limit multiple-editor access only to post #1, which is really the only place for the pertinent details of a thread to be maintained. We should also be able to see not just when but who made each update.

I would even welcome a checkbox to allow Deal Gurus and Addicts access to my threads' #1 post, as a quick an easy way to open up a thread to coop editing without having to specify each trusted poster.

Of course this all depends on whether the forum software allows for such granular control.

As I've previously stated, coupon expiry dates may not be true, in many cases you can continue to use the coupon eventhough the expiry date is passed.

In my own personal experience, after 20 posts of (the $50 coupon doesn't work!) I tried it, and guess what? It worked.

So, update the thread only if it's confirmed that the coupon is dead (1 week after expiry date or when RFD effect overwhelmingly takes over). As I've said before, just try adding it to your cart, if it doesn't work, then don't use it.

I'm sure that we're all grateful for this site that has helped us save so much money, so a few kinks here and there are acceptable.

And guys, I just wanted to ask if MIR is faster, or EZ rebate is faster? Also, would it matter if I used coupons on my purchase or not for rebates? Thanks!

Rebates are from the manufacturer, so no, it doesn't matter if you use a Staples coupon on your purchase.

The EZ rebate is faster than mail-in usually, but only because you can submit the rebate request online in cases where the manufacturer doesn't provide online submission. In theory another advantage is that you can complain more easily to Staples if you don't get the rebate in a reasonable time, but in practice all Staples does is pass your complaint on to the manufacturer - they don't guarantee that you will get the rebate.

If you ordered on Thursday, your order might have gotten trashed in the credit card screwup they had that night. But you should have gotten an email or phone call asking you to call customer service about your order - and the email everyone else got about this issue said that your item would only be held for 48 hours.

I believe most of them use FedEx or UPS or Canada Post. Don't think they earn just minimum wage. Besides you may request to ship to your office address - I am sure many people do that already.

Back in late November I used coupon 67560 to get $20 off a Harmony 550. Returned it to get the Dell 720 deal and now I see Staples billed my MC for $22.80 since my order no longer qualifies after the return. I tried to use mine and it didn't seem to work when I copied and pasted it into the coupon box in the order form. What happens is that it chops off the last few digits that way because you need to delete all the zeroes first!

When they asked me, I said I get emails from staples every few weeks with coupon numbers and just write them down. Then they said it only applies to a Motorola BT. Then I said that their system accepted it and I have an invoice on my system showing that. Then they say their system was wrong. Blah, blah, blah.

I gave them hell for not informing me that the coupon was rejected and still delivering the order here. Also I complained that I was home for two evenings waiting for their truck to pick it up here and it never showed up. Now I have to wait at home for a fourth evening for them to pick it up!!?? What is my time worth?

I finally talked a manager into giving me a $30 credit for my inconvenience caused by the truck not showing up, and I agreed to keep the order. Not as good as $50 off $115 but not bad and it saves me waiting at home yet again for them to show up...

Here's what happened to me today at awesome Staples.

So, I applied the $50 coupon 3 weeks ago to a purchase, and everything went through very smoothly, the system recognized it, i got my package with the coupon applied to it and everything was excellent.

My purchase included the MX revolution mouse, and after 2 days of playing with it, I find out that the left mouse button makes a squeak whenever I press it. Now this is definitely very annoying, and very abnormal, so I phone Staples, and see if I can get a replacement at my local Staples store. The CSR says yes, you can do that.

When I went to my local Staples store to get a replacement, the clerk there said that she had to phone to ask if an exchange was allowed. Now, I told her that I called in to check already and indeed, it is ok to get a replacement from a Staples store. But she insisted that she had to check and she proceeded to calling them.

After walking around the store for 10 minutes, she says that the CSR on the phone would like to speak to me. She told me that the $50 coupon was invalid and only came with the BT headset. I told her I did not know that, and because their system accepted it, I thought it was ok, as I already paid for the purchase 3 weeks ago. So she went through a huge loop and basically told me that they need to charge me the $50 that the coupon took off.

At this point, I had already been in the store for 15 minutes and I could not believe what she was saying. Here is a big company, who is in direct competition with FS and BB which by the way, have lower prices then they do, and they want to charge me for that $50 extra on a purchase I never would have made in the first place if not for the coupon. When I told her I was going to refund it, she didn't try to talk me out of it or at the very least apologize for wasting my time and acknowledge that it was their fault for accepting the coupon in the first place.

So I refunded it and I can assure them that I will be doing my christmas shopping elsewhere from now on. I don't know how they can survive the competition from the Bestbuy corporation... not with this kind of customer service. Oh yeah, and they wasted 30 minutes of my time and no one said anything to me, no apology, nothing.

Now that I think about it, I'm glad I returned it. It was still inside the 30 day return period. If they call me after the 30 days and tell me that they would be charging the $50 coupon, I wouldn't be able to return it, and therefore would've been screwed.

So the moral of the story is, Staples doesn't know how to keep existing customers or make new ones. Goodluck Staples, you need it.

I told her I did not know that, and because their system accepted it, I thought it was ok, as I already paid for the purchase 3 weeks ago. So she went through a huge loop and basically told me that they need to charge me the $50 that the coupon took off.

Why do you need someone else's coupon when you can use the $30 off $175 coupon which is more valuable than the $20 off $200 coupon?

BTW, you can stack coupons, so if you spend $350, you will get $60 off instead of $50.

No, it won't work the way as you said. To use one $20 off $200 and one $30 off $175 coupons together, your total purchase must be $375 before tax.

If you read the first page of this thread regarding the rule for stacking of coupons, what you are proposing is not possible.

The above poster is correct; $375 purchase is needed for $50 off (or $325 purchase if you use a $20 off $150 coupon).

Here is how it works (from page one of this thread):

Okay, I was about to Submit order, until my friend messaged me saying he might be able to get it cheaper(ink) then after 7-10minute he said it's the same price, so I just opted with Staples. Then I return back to the homepage, I was like ??? did I take too long to order or what? and I checked the "Orders" thing and it said "No orders have been saved or if your last transaction was 90 days or later"

So I did it again and still nothing, no emails no nothing...so I'm not sure if I even ordered or if I ordered TWO sets of everything in my check-out cart...

PS: What's weird is my checkout cart is still full with the items I "Bought"...

If the stuff is still in the cart, you probably did not submit your order. And you usually get a email confirmation a few minutes after you submit your order.
I think you are OK since the order appears not to go through but be sure to clear your cart.

If your order did go through, there is a phone number in the email you can use to contact customer service to cancel the order.

Just remember that if you are using coupons too, make sure the price before coupons is still above the coupon requirement or Staples will not honor the coupon. To make things worst, they will ship you your order anyways (making it a hassle for you to return it) unless you phone them to cancel your order. Kinda stupid since they should at least confirm you still want your order before they ship it.:cry:
