View Full Version : Cars that have remained in style over the years?

Not exotics, but everyday layman's vehicles we see on the road, say 5yrs or older IN STOCK FORM. Must be realistic and attainable, with a price range up to lets say $50,000 just for sakes. Some designs seems to have that dated look after awhile, while others tend to remain longer and still turns head when you see them on the road. Maybe it's because we don't see them as much or maybe they really do have good styling in general.
Post pics if you can as well.

I will vote for the Acura NSX which hasn't had a major overhaul since 1990.
And I will say the NSX because it's an exotic. It's something you don't see every day, let alone every month. I could go on for like a year before I see an NSX around the GTA. You can't say the same thing for the Corvette, or Vipers.

Honda Prelude w/ OEM Lipkit
Classic Japanese GT design with it's long hood and small trunk. IMO, way better than the boring bubble bloated designs of today.

loho33, you and I must be long lost brothers 'cause I think the same thing as you do. Today's vehicle I find are all bubbly and bloated in general. The Prelude having an actual trunk is unique to me, as well as the long hood as you've stated. Only wished it came in RWD form. The lines are very direct, visible, and clean. My only knock against it is the spoiler actually, it looks cleaner without it IMO.
The NSX is a head turner indeed. For some reason I'm also attracted to the Nissan 300zx as well.

Those VWs are not stock so they dont count, and the NSX was my second choice BUT it costs more than 50K...Read the OP then choose a car.
The prelude i agree with everything you said...damn only if it was RWD :(

Can't find any images of the Toyota Cressida but I still think the last generation was one of the more beautiful Japanese sedans from the early 90s.

When I worked for GO Transit in the early Nineties in Toronto, I would glance out the window nearly everyday to look at a 1991 (or so) yellow Toyota MR2, just dreaming of owning one because it was so good looking.
Nothing since then touches this car in terms of styling IMHO.

Early 90s Toyota sportscar designs were some of the best (if not the best) of that era. They haven't come up with anything close ever since.

The Silvia was retired in 2002, so only 5 years ago (though I think you're right, its design will probably pass the test of time). I also think the S14 has a rather timeless design:

my beloved prelude is a beautiful car! (atleast to me and turns heads all the time even thoe thers a ton on the streets), second would be the newer 240 and mr2's all beautiful and attainable.
Supra would be considered super car territory as with the NSX.

The 1968-1973 Opel GT
... is the best-known of the Opels imported to North America, due to its head-turning styling and capacity for autobahn performance.
What is not as widely known, are OMC's available technical solutions for some of the common mechanical issues that affect this now 32+ year old roadster, and the history of engineering partnerships that resulted in the Opel GT being one of a very few auto projects that went from a show car prototype to a production vehicle.
Some Opel GT facts:
* Over 100,000 GT's were produced, and over 70,000 Opel GT's sold in North America.
* The history of the Opel GT design extends as far back as 1962, BEFORE the production of the mid-1960's Corvettes. Original GT designers included Clare MacKichan and Chuck Jordan, (who are also known for the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, Corvair Monza Spyder, Chevy Camaro, and the Opel Manta, among others).
* The Opel GT was the most aerodynamic car produced by General Motors in the 1960's, as it was designed with a wind tunnel for a cruising speed of over 120+ mph.
* The original Opel GT's featured 15-inch wheels, front and rear anti-sway bars, and a 128hp dual-carburetor "Sprint" engine, before it was "de-tuned" by GM for the US market. Production models did retain the original 150mph speedometer, which is synchronized to maintain a parallel needle position with the functional tachometer at speed.
* A hybrid-energy Opel GT was developed in the 1970's, and over 60,000 copies of plans from this vehicle were sold by "Mother Jones" magazine.
* The Opel GT is most recognized, from the appearance of an "Aztec Gold" 1969 model, in the opening scenes of the final season of TV's "Get Smart."

Say what you will about Volvos, but the 850 is nearly 15 years old, and even to this day the styling doesn't look anything its age. It's not the head-turning kind of style, but it hides its age very well.

Best of all, you can get a mint Mustang of this style, modified to kill most other cars at the track, for under $10K. Parts are cheap, and engine is simple and easy to work on yourself.

And I will say the NSX because it's an exotic. It's something you don't see every day, let alone every month. I could go on for like a year before I see an NSX around the GTA. You can't say the same thing for the Corvette, or Vipers.

Throw in most Alfa Romeos and Citroëns made in the last few decades. Of course most of these have been conspicuously absent from North America, especially Canada.
I mean look at these:

There are some nice pics on this threads.
For FF, my fav is JDM DC2 ITR. I never liked the projector headlights of the North American version of DC2. The 4wd celica with twin headlights is a great car, but the stock styling, that you don't see in the thread is ugly, needs modding. Kind of like the last/outgoing celica, it desperately needed the TRD kit. A few weeks ago, I saw a nicely lowered DC5 integra, the rear wasn't too high, so it looked nice.
For MR, the SW20 MR2 has a long standing design. Looked amazing back in early 90s, still looks great to me. If they built a new one that looked similar, more power, wider. I'd buy it for $50k or less.
As for FR, the s2k is a great car, but the looks to me at least will not leave me the impression long. I personally like the last Supra, think its MKIV. Stock body is nice.
Most cars, I like stock. Personally, ok looking or hideous car are ones that need modding desparately.
As for 4WD, I still like the WRX 22B STI, lowered a little. That engine revs really high.

My father in law bought one brand new in 91.
He was 65. Every Sunday morning, if the weather was nice,
he'd get 'er up to 185km/r on Hiway 406 in St Catharines.
Not an easy stretch of highway, lots of twists and bends.
He turned 80 this year, celebrated with same ritual.
He's a driver for Performance Group in St Catharines and gets to drive
every luxury car you can imagine. He still loves his Legend, and recently
his 2007 Es350
Here's a similar car

It was way ahead of it's time, and I don't see a whole heck of a lot of resemblance between the Cavalier and the DMC-12. It's a sporty car with a beautiful body and really cool doors. A head turner in every way to me.

I said "a heck of a lot of resemblance." I see that both are overall a similar shape, but the DMC-12 is a 2 seater, with the engine in the back and the boot in the bonet. It's much lower to the ground and has a stainless steel body, which I personally think it shows off beautifully. The doors themselves are an impressive feat of engineering in that they only need 14" of clearance to open, which (from what I've read) is less than most coupes.
I guess if you don't have an eye for it then you just don't. Personally I think it's a spankin' car.

Its a nice looking car still. Not much different than an MR-2 of that era ( or a little later??) which is also a nice looking car. And I beleive that was the last year of the Fiero, and they were actually a much improved car than the earliar Fiero, which was quite sucessful, but a joke of a car.

They did improve them quite a bit both cosmetically and structurally by the end of the run, I was just struck by how big the gaps were, and how it just seemed snapped together. I'm sure it's just because of the plastic, but you don't see gaps like that anymore.
I liked the looks of the MR2 when it came out, but the first gen looks really dated now. The second generation still looks great, I wish they would have made them a few more years so I could have afforded a new one. The 3rd gen MR2 didn't do much for me.

the fact that body style didnt change much from 94-2000 (or 2001) shows that it kept on selling without needing major design changes!

Lol...I never thought of it before ,but esp the back has a strong similarity. Never cared for the DMC....Maybe the first Rice car factory made. A mediocre vehicle tricked out with gull wing doors and stainless body panels for effect more than anything. Performance, reliability, etc...meh. Overall body shape was a cheaper looking knockoff of the Lotus Esprits.

Never did like the newer model Cavaliers. When I saw the Mazda3 rear end it really reminded me of the Cavalier and went bleh and thought it was cheap looking. But regardless though when the Mazda3 came out it sure did sell like hot cakes. The rear seat and entry of the Mazda3 was tight and small, just not my thing. The bigger brother Mazda6 was more of a head turner.
The Integras more often not have been riced up and most of the stock ones I've seen aren't well maintained and don't look very appealing. But the silver one posted here does look awesome.

Acura RSX? If you look at the design trend over the years for coupes and sedans, they all take on the same typical bubbly high roofline look as the RSX. So in that sense it's not something unique or stands out. It may withstand the test of time, but I don't really think it's a head turner.
And the Cavalier? Somebody on drugs??
The Crown Victoria I don't think has changed much over the years, and for some reason, maybe because it's a cop cruiser, it is a vehicle that many fear (people slowing down when they get near one only to find out its an old couple cruising along). Lookwise it has remained current, at least I think.
