I'm fixing a friend's system and I can't get into Winblows because the motherboard is fubar and causes a freeze up as soon as it reaches the desktop (if it even gets there). I yanked the drive and installed it in my own system to backup data, but I'm wondering if there's a way I can recover the XP serial key off the drive.

It won't boot up into Windows if the chipset is different. It's an old SIS-based board and the replacement is going to be an Intel.

To get the product key off your friend's hard drive, try this utility:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

It looks like it should do what you need.

The utility should work as long as he can access the Windows directory on his friend's hard drive (by putting it into his computer). It doesn't need to boot Windows from his friend's drive to work.

Produkey worked perfectly! Pretty cool that it had command line functionality. Many thanks.

Did you your system from the drive or did you just attach the drive to your system and boot from your own drive. Depending on what you did the XP serial could be your own and not your friend's.

I attached it. The produkey's GUI won't let you scan other drives so I used it from the command line to scan his drive. I'm not stupid enough to mistake my own key for his... I have mine memorized.
