can sata and ide work at the same time?
ie. can i still use my two hdd's ide and connect the sata burner with no conflicts?
is sata dvd burners faster than ide? any benefits to go that route?

No benefit of a SATA burner other than smaller cable.
You have one? Was it pulled from a name-brand computer? They're quite rare still. Liteon has the only one widely available, and that's only in the USA. They're only just beginning to trickle northwards.

I have two plextor sata drives .. there is no speed benefit, but I do like not having any IDE cables in my comp, really cleans up the inside nicely. If you're going to have two rom drives on just one IDE cable that it makes sense to change at least one of them over to SATA, as two drives on 1 IDE cable is really going to slow things down if you ever have to use both at the same time.
