I'm looking to buy a wireless USB adapter for my laptop. It's an older laptop with no wireless card built in. I was looking at the D-Link and Linksys adapters at FutureShop today.
I've got a wireless-G D-Link router in my basement and I'd like to be able to use connect my laptop 2 floors up. Which wireless-G adapter has the best range? I'd switch to wireless-N but I don't want to spend too much (got the wireless-G router as a gift).
Thanks!

This is coming from my limited personal experience as I have owned 2 in my life. I purchased a DLink USB adaptor a while ago and I had a lot of problems with it. The connection would constantly drop even though I was very close to the AP. I decided to buy a new USB adaptor and went with a Linksys WUSB54G and I haven't had too many problems with it. So I would recommend the Linksys one. (I think most people have had WiFi issues so its just finding the one that gives you the least)

I'm leaning towards the Linksys now but would a D-Link adapter work better with a D-Link router since they're the same manufacturer?

Personally i would sugest you to go with TRENDNET 108Mbps G W-LESS USB ADAPTER. I have 2 of them for over a year now, and it works with everything, and its just great. Gets the signal really good. I did not have any problems with them so far.
Go for it. ::

A PCMCIA card would work better than a USB adapter. USB tends to be unstable.

Another vote for the Linksys WUSB54G. No problems at all.

Thanks Ghost_Rider. I'll give the Trendnet a try. It's on sale at Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10068673&catid=21120) for $29.99 after rebate. Picking up the Linksys too in case the Trendnet doesn't work out. It's going for $54.99 after rebate also at Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10075202&catid=21120).

Avoid buying an external usb wireless adapter if you have another choice. I owned one, and after a while of use I accidently bent it enough so that it stopped working.
If your laptop has a spot for an internal wireless card get one. You'll have better range with an internal and there's no risk of damage. I bought mine off ebay for really cheap and it works great. Installation was also a breeze.

Let us know how they came out working.

I'll be keeping the Trendnet. Even 2 stories up from my router I was able to get decent signal (4 bars). The linksys is going back - didn't even open it. To make things even sweeter Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10068673&catid=21120) dropped their price to $19.99 after rebate.
Thanks Ghost_Rider for your recommendation.
