why are they still so big? the portable ones..
even though some mp3 players have fm and they're small, why don't they put am in it as well?

The wavelength difference between FM and AM frequencies is such that you would need a larger antenna to receive an adequate AM signal. Wavelength for FM is very small, hence small antenna....usually they incorporate that into the headphone wire for optimal reception.

AM wavelength is longer, thus harder to penetrate, thus bigger antenna needed, right?
