View Full Version : Umbrella Strollers

I'm looking to pick one up for a trip. I currently have a full size travel system Quattro Tour, but am going on a trip with my little one. He'll be around 9-10 months old at the start of the trip.
I'd love to get something on the high end, but am already spending lots on getting him in a new car seat ($300) so I'd like to conserve and save money, like any good RFDer would.
I don't want a cheapo umbrella stroller that they sell everywhere, as it probably won't be too comfortable for the long walks we are going to have on our vacation (a 12-day mediterranean cruise). So anybody have any suggestions? I know I've looked at the Peg Perego Pliko Lite and MacLaren Triumph, but I'm hoping to find something cheaper and good and comfy. Any hot deals would be good too.

My suggestion would be the Pliko.
I bought mine over 10 years ago, and even after three kids, I still sold it for half of it's retail.
They are compact, ideal for travel and maintain resale value.

Pliko and Maclaren are pretty good bets - I don't think you'll find anything a lightweight, durable and quick-steering as a Mac. It's the perfect stroller to leave in the trunk and pull-out for the mall - when the kids wants to walk, the weight of a Mac on your shoulders (using the strap) is nothing

a $300 car seat???
are you freakin' insane? Is this custom built/flown in from Italy? Geez. Dont' know if any RFDers would be that insane. Now if they got it 1/2 price then yeah maybe...but still.
and on the other extreme you want a penny-pinching umbrella stroller?
shucks., I'm so lost with this thread.

Baby stuff is pricey - $300 on a car seat doesn't seem that out of line considering a Mac umbrella stroller is at least $200, a Bugaboo is about $1200 - we have @ least $1k spent on strollers - baby stuff is big business.
We have no regrets spending the money we did on accessories/essentials - the styling, ease of use and design all paid off.
Another RFDer that is just insane.

 $1000 worth in strollers? My travel system was $250, I picked up a $50 Seat2Go when my youngest was born (he's 2 now), and I had a $10 umbrella stroller that I just gave to a friend to use. No complaints about any of my middle of the line stuff -- they made it through my 2 boys and are currently being used by friends who needed them.

If you red my post I said "I don't want a cheapo umbrella stroller". Plus even if I were to get a penny-pinching umbrella stroller, it isn't due to loss in safety either. Car seats are a different matter.
In terms of the car seat, I'm willing to pay $300 for safety reasons, nothing more. Is not a life worth $300? It's not like $300 would kill me, let's say you could get 2 cars, one cost $200 more but is safer. Wouldn't you pay the $200 more?
I know on the internet, there is a parent who wishes she bought something safer, as she lost her son to an accident.

On the issue of safety:
In Toronto, local police stations offer to inspect & assist with your car seat installation. Takes about 15 minutes of your time to make sure the base is in safely :)

I never said there was anything wrong with low-end of mid-range stuff - everyone has a choice, right? There are those on this forum that drive $50k+ vehicles, there are those roll in the dough, but choose to drive something modest and then there are those who choose to ride public transit.
I must say that there is no comparison between a $10 Walmart stroller and pricey high-end unit - it really is night and day in how it handles day to day use.
FYI, we have owned a Peg Pliko stroller/infant seat combination, a $450 B.O.B. trail running stroller (my Wife trains and runs 10k and 1/2 marathons), and two Maclaren strollers - it adds up quickly.

Get a MacLaren for sure. I got mine cheap on eBay and paid half of what they were selling for in the GTA. Ours has traveled thousands of miles (on airlines) and we love(d) it.

We have the Peg Perego Pliko P3 stroller as well and it's worth every penny! Super compact and lightweight in terms of dimensions and 15lbs, easy to push, has storage, cupholder, etc. It will hold up, not like the Graco's etc which after time break or are difficult to push not to mention there so bulky!

I believe you get what you pay for. I have what was a $350 carseat (the Britax Marathon - which I believe now retails for $300) and it is a much nicer seat than our Graco. The straps are nicer, the seat itself is nicer. It is very easy to install and it can be tethered rear facing.
Strollers are another thing that I like to spend a bit of money on. I've owned an Evenflo (wheel fell off), a Graco (which was a beast - squeeked and did not steer nicely at all) and we briefly had a Costco Eddie Bauer which was quite possibly the worst stroller I've ever owned for a variety of reasons. I now have an Inglesina Magnum, a Hauck Infinity, and a Quinny Zapp. I also have a Chariot Cougar 2 for outdoors. I'm extremely happy with all of our strollers and despite them being more expensive I did get great deals on all of them. The best part is that when I'm done with them I will be able to sell them and recoup some of my money.

We settled on the Peg Perego Aria after testing the P3 & Pliko Lite
the under seat basket in the Aria is quite useful, and we find it folds easier than the P3 & A3

-fits in the stow and go area of the mini van

-has a movable sunshade we trave to the dominican once a yr and want to be able to move it to block the sun when she is sleeping
-oh something she can nap in (she has short 20 minute power naps)
and not over the top in price the airport has lost 2 strollers so for in the last 6 yrs

If you gate check your strollers, they will never get lost since they are put directly in the hold. Wheeling your kids up to the gate is the best way to maintain order when your boarding passes/ID are being checked.

We have a maclaren triumph, it's awesome. I thought it was pricey at first, but it's worth the $$$.
The reclining feature alone is worth it. My wife convinced me to order it after we sold our zap stroller.
We've travelled around the world with the mclaren, it's light enough for the wife to carry to the airport gate with our 1 year son and a bag. The 2 travalled to New York and DC on standby.
It's super sturdy, the sunshade could be a bit bigger but, that would probaly make it a bit bulkier.
We ordered our thru www.babydealz.com, shipped it to a TSB postal box in Blaine, WA. They accept canadian credit cards, which many US sites dont' offer, and they have great prices on older models. Strollers dont' change much year to year.

Graco umbrella stroller $10 - went through 3 kids and was well used. No problems and basically folded into a tube
Now are you asking for an umbrella stroller, or an actual big stroller. An umbrella stollers are for traveling, are very small and are only good for one child. Also the have a plastic u handle like an umbrella, hence umbrella stroller
Sometime the companies that make the pricey stuff just wait for new parents..
Second hand stores, etc are your friends. Value village for kids clothes, buying off season for winter stuff.

Actually, our MacLaren umbrella stroller is the Rally Twin, a side-by-side that that reclines and has a basket underneath. This has travelled thousands of miles with us. It takes less space than a small bag of golf clubs.

I think the reason why no one has suggested Inglesina is that unless they found a new distributor, they are no longer available in Canada. You would have to go to the US to get one. I bought mine (an Inglesina Magnum) on closeout at a baby shop because of this. It is a lovely stroller though.
If anyone knows where you can get Inglesina strollers though in Canada please let me know - I'd love to get another chassis for the Magnum.
Kelly
eta - also the distributor list that shows stores in Canada on the Inglesina website is horribly out of date - that was the same list that I saw when I was looking at my Inglesina over a year ago. It still shows Nursery Rhymes as being in Kitchener - it hasn't been in Kitchener in close to a year - it's now in Brantford.

Hi there.
I was wondering if anyone has the P3 PLIKO COMPLETO--IT'S THE EUROPEAN MODEL BY PEG PEREGO. If so, I was wondering if the footcover is removable, and if so, how easy is it to remove?--ie. via zipper? How satisfied are you with this model? Any downsides, other than price?
Thanks,
Bees.

Are you talking about this? Pliko P3 Pramette (http://www.minicircuit.ca/mi00048.htm)
This one is convertible from a bassinet style to a standard stroller. We have it and I think it's great. It's very easy to convert from one way to the other and It's quite light. It folds easily and we still have a lot of room in the trunk with it inside. The foot cover is held by clip on buttons. It is very easy to put on and take out. I personally don't find any downsides to it. It moves around really easy and my wife has no problems going up sidewalks when there is no ramp. Also, when they say you can use one hand to move it around, they really mean it. :) A lot of times I have something on one hand and can go around the mall using only one hand to move the stroller.

Hi GunnerX.
It is pretty close, it is the Euro version of the Pliko P3, which there, includes the foot cover. The Plikos here, don't, and it is the Pramette, which you have, that has a foot cover.
This is what it looks like--if this link works--

Did anyone have problem with Pliko's safety belt? The part that is supposed to attach to the back is not that safe, isn't it?
My son tried to escape once with the seat belt fastened, and the back part detached easily, so he got halfway out and got stuck between the cup holder and the seat.
He never likes the Pliko, and we swithed to the Maclaren Triumph and he loves it.

Actually, Markville Mall in Markham uses the Pliko P3 for people to borrow if they need one. This was a big plus for us because one time we didn't expect to drop by but decided to and we didn't have any stroller. I did have the Peg Perego car seat so we just borrowed the stroller and I converted it and put the car seat right in. Very convenient.

Just picked up a new Peg Perego Pliko P3 Classico for $279 at DearBorn. They had 2006 stock and the only real difference are the colours and 2007 has the rear brakes linked (push once to lock both wheels as opposed to push each individually on older models).
They also had 2006 Pliko Lite for $199 and 2006 Aria for $149. I also remember seeing a Pliko P3 Completo for $349.
It's a great place to check out strollers even if you don't end up buying there. Very friendly and knowledgable staff, plus they have a lot of selection so you can try out all the strollers. We spents hours opening and closing strollers until we decided to go with the Pliko. :D

Just to let everyone know, I ended up getting a Rock Star Elite. Basically it is exactly the same as a MacLaren Triumph, except for a few details. The recline is in three steps, rather than the strap they give. I didn't like the strap thing. And the foot rest area, can be raised to be flat, or bent, depending on what you want. Other than that, the design is pretty much identical, including folding, everything.
The only thing I wish it did have was a front tray area (which is why we almost picked the Peg Aria). But the Rock Star Elite at $109 was just too good a price, and it folds much smaller than the Peg. All in all, we are pretty satisfied with the purchase.
I got it at Dearborn as well, like the above poster. My main goal was compact and quality, and not one cheapo $29 umbrella stroller.

Don't worry about your husband. I wasn't too crazy about spending that much on an umbrella stroller, but my wife absolutely "needed" it. After playing around with it and comparing it to other strollers, I'm convienced that this is the right one for us and it's worth the money.

Hi,
Has anyone tried the peg perego uno?
The only beef I have with it is that when the baby is facing you, the big wheels are in the front and they don't swivel, so it's kinda hard to push it and turn it....
Otherwise I was hoping the bigger wheels will be better for going through snow and over street car tracks.
thanks :)

I don't necessarily agree with the statement, that Pegs are overrated. Yes they are expensive. I own two--the A3 pramette, and the P3 Pliko Completo. I swore after owning the A3, that I wouldn't get another Peg--due to difficulty with customer service issues. But...after looking at the competition, and reviewing MY needs, I chose to go back. Yes, I ate crow. But, I think it's unfair to make that kind of statement point blank. Each of us needs to make that needs assessment and decide for ourselves what is worth what to each of us.
Just my humble opinion.

Seeing how the Canadian Dollar is so high now, I'd suggest you buy online if possible on a US Site and purchase a nice stroller. Or just go to Buffalo for a day trip and purchase one at the local retailers.

Get a MacLaren for sure. I got mine cheap on eBay and paid half of what they were selling for in the GTA. Ours has traveled thousands of miles (on airlines) and we love(d) it.
Just checked a Maclaren stroller on Ebay. The shipping to Canada is $42.00 while the stroller itself only cost $69. That totally kilss the deal. Can you tell me how much you paid for the shipping?

Have you thought about getting the item shipped to the UPS store in niagara falls,NY. In which they charge you what $10+($1/day that it is held there), and then when you go pick it up throw it in the trunk with no box and it looks like its always been there ;) ;) ;) ;)

Does anyone know if there are any umbrella strollers on sale right now anywhere? I want to buy one within the next two weeks... Not a cheapo one though - maybe middle of the road...
How much are you looking to spend? 300-400?
If you think about it, buying a P3 Pliko is a good deal since it hold value well, and say 3 years down the line you could sell it for 150$, bare minimum on it would be 100...:cheesygri .

Have you considered looking at a Combi?
We had picked up 7 years ago and we're still using it for the youngest...mind you he's pretty close outgrowing it.

There's not even any reason to lie. On the past few cross-border shopping trips by myself and friends, they've never charged us taxes when we tell them we're bringing back baby stuff. One time we bought $600 worth of stuff and was fully prepared to pay taxes on it, but didn't have to.

Anyone own a B.O.B. Revolution? After reading all the reviews I can find, I was pretty much set on the Pliko P3 until I actually test drove a couple of them.
The P3 was good, but both my wife and I really liked the B.O.B. It rolls so smoothly and the folding was very intuitive. We're also thinking it suffices for easy jogging with the front wheel locked, so we're hopeful that it would save us from the $1000s in multiple strollers that all my friends (and from the sounds of it, a lot of RFDers) face. The only thing I didn't like it was the lack of padding on the stroller.
I still have 4 months to decide :) but being our first I'm excited and doing research early.

Tested it out - was ok, but I would caution strongly against using any of the locking wheel strollers as real joggers. We wound up with a much lesser known "BumbleRider Rocket", which has similar styling to the BOB Revolution - great on sand/offroad and easy walking around with. Not as much fun to travel with, since it's larger and doesn't fold. The selling point for the BumbleRider for us was that it converted to a completely flat interior surface (ie backrest down, footrest up) allowing us to but our entire bassinet into the stroller for the first month or so...
Generally I'm a big fan of doubling up on a given item's usefullness (ie, buy one stroller that serves multiple purposes), but I just can't seem to find something to fit the bill when it comes to strollers, so I've settled with trying to minimize the costs and find the deals. For more expensive strollers, look to the US - for the cheaper umbrella strollers, shipping will kill you every time...
For what it's worth, we've wound up with 3 strollers; a big 3 wheeler, much like the Bob, a "Baby Jogger" running stroller (which sees 3-15kms per day of running, so quality was paramount), and a Quinny Zap - by far the most interesting umbrella stroller I've ever seen - great for malls, travelling, or fitting into the back of a Mini Cooper! ;)
Enjoy your research and congrats on the new family member!

Hi,
I am thinking of getting the peg perego p3 classico or the pramette.
Anyone have any comments? How about car seat? Did everyone buy the Peg perego car seat? Or can you snap almost any car set in? I was thinking of getting the Britax Marathon. It kind of sucks that the Perego ones are only good untill 22lbs.
Also where is the best place to buy them? Preferrably in Mississauga or the GTA.
Thanks.

We have the P3 Pramette and are very satisfied with the purchase. We also picked up the Viaggo SIP car seat which we really really liked. It basically goes on all the shopping carts we've used and it's really to strap in the baby and take them out. I don't think you can snap in just any car seat. The Britax Marathon is a convertible so it cannot be moved from car to stroller and vice versa. We bought the Britax Roundabout now that our daughter is over 1 year old.

We've got the BOB SUS stroller, its a jogger similar to the revolution (MEC has both), but the front wheel is fixed. Its balanced well though and easy to turn. Its not super portable. You can fold it and take off the wheels, but its easier to use a smaller stroller if you are going places. The BOB is great for going for a walk outside since it goes up and down curbs easy. The only thing is that it has a harness type restraint so the baby can't lean forward too far, which our little guy sometimes likes to do when we go out.

How do you ask seller to ship to UPS store in US-CA board, especially from ebay? Thanks.
