I keep getting these weird popups. I get these popups every 5 minutes or so with a title of "Messenger Service". The body says, "Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 3/4/2007 11:13:06 am" "STOP! IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUIRED!" "Windows has found CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS. Download Registry Cleaner from www.clean32dotcom". "Failure to act now may lead to data loss and corruption". Or I will get variations of this same popup.

I have BestPopupKIller but it doesn't seem to kill these popups. These things popup when I'm playing games like Counterstrike so it gets really annoying and frustrating as hell. How do I get rid of them and what might be causing these things? Any help would be appreiated, thanks.

Seriously sounds like a virus...

You should update to a newer SP if you're running XP. SP2 should have disabled that by default.

sounds like a trojan - do a search for it and find a removal tool for it - if all else fails you may have to do a system restore prior to the date you figured you got it.

It's not a virus or trojan. It's the Windows Messenger Service that allows someone to send a msg to another computer on the network. Rogers network automatically blocks them but Sympatico doesn't.

The correct answer.

This was originally designed for network admins to send alert messages.
