It's good for hiking, biking.

The eTrex Summit was designed for both marine and recreation use. This all-in-one navigation device for the outdoor enthusiast is the first combination GPS, altimeter, and electronic compass. The electronic compass provides bearing information when you're standing still and the altimeter determines precise altitude, so you can tell how high you've climbed and your rate of ascent.

Like its predecessor, the eTrex Summit boasts a powerful 12 parallel channel GPS receiver and comes packaged in a small, sleek case with operating buttons located on either side of the unit. The case is completely waterproof to withstand immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

I was about ready to go and pick this up until I realized it doesn't have mapping...ie no built in base map and no upload capability. Not a huge deal for some, but even though I'd be using this mostly just for hiking/trekking, I'd like to be able to upload topo maps at least. Also, the regular price of $259 is pretty steep compared to gpscity.ca (http://www.gpscity.ca/item-garmin-etrex-summit/etrexsummit.htm) at $174.95.

That being said, this is still cheaper by $50 after shipping and you won't find a new gps with a barometric altimeter and digital compass for less unless it's fallen off a truck. I think this is a pretty good deal for those who don't need mapping or are going to hook it to a laptop, etc.

I'm still deciding whether I want this. If you want mapping, like I do, you may want to spend "more" and get the eTrex Legend (or other compareable models), however you will not get the barometric altimeter and digital compass until you hit the Vista, which is > $200.
