Our two year old son started potty training and was doing a great job...he they took a couple of months and had to return to the diaper....they resumed with the potty. By three he was fully trained. We only used a pull-up at times during the night.

Key was not to pressure. We had a potty on every floor. As an aside, we were open with using the bathroom...he could see daddy peeing or mummy etc...

We have 2 1/2 yr. old twins (boy/girl) & also are at this stage...I try to remind them all the time but sometimes no luck...My daughter is a little better than my son, she can actually call me & says pee...pee... Sometimes they just say that to probably make me happy but nothing happens... It's a long process, since went through it with my older son. With him I found it easier since it was spring/summer & I would just let him outside on the backyard without the diaper & whenever he wanted to pee, he would just do it on the grass or under a tree   So, since it is winter & a new house in which we still have no grass, no such luck >:(

That's the main thing. Dont pressure you child to make them pee.

What I did was whenever we were home he would wear underwear, and if we went out he had diapers on.

At home every two hours either my wife or I would tell him to goto the potty and he would relieve himself. We tell him words of encouragement then such as "Wow, you went pee-pee by yourself....you did not wet your pants...very good job etc." NEVER yell at them if they have lil accidents.

He eventually went to pee on his own in a short time, and would let us know he had peed to show that he was a good boy LOL.....they know that the parents praised him and thus made him hqappy he was able to do it himself.

There is no set timeframe as when they can do it. We tried when he was 2 1/2 but didnt work out. So we waited a couple months and tried again. That was when he realized what he had to do.

From the time we started to when he was potty-trained took less than a month. He still wears his diapers when he sleeps now.

There's no reason to fret even if they are 3 and dont know yet. WHen u put pressure, they will feel discouraged and wont do it.

Good luck!

wow...THIS, is a difficult one.

It's really timing, persistence, and patience.

There's no surefire way, Just plain old elbow grease.

Congratulations, and rewards is the best way. Making Toilet time 'FUN' is key. Bring toys to the bathroom., make it an activity. CUE TANGENT-I wonder if there's a correlation to this aspect and to adults who spend 30mins~1hr in the 'Jon' lol. I'm an in-and-out kinda person so it's a little strange each time I hear others say "I was reading this in the Jon the other day" lol. Back to the thread :o.

Yes, so just go with the flow....no pun intended

as an aside, I give thorough PROPS to the old school parents who have their toddlers trained from ~12months. Very respectable. It's been awhile that I do see-very clearly-my 16mo's facial expressions when morning BM is occurring, and I always kick myself when I try not to quickly make a dash to the potty to begin the familiarisation aspect. I'm SURE if I did it frequently we'd have the toilet training WELL behind us within no time.

My son is 9 weeks old, we start putting him on the potty 2 weeks ago, he actualy enjoy doing it in the potty instead of doing it in his diapers. Normally he gives some visual cues to us when he needs to go. We are still working on #1, but other than an every so often "accident", he pretty much got number 2 down, or he always leaves something behind when we put him there.:)

my daughter was potty trained by 2 before she even really talked. I would ask her repeatedly if she had to go pee or poo and would make a huge deal if she did go pee on the potty (clapping, singing etc) Consistency is important I never used pull ups except if we were going out I used panties at home or let her just go commando with dresses. I also used cloth diapers with her and I have read that may have helped us train early. I hear good things about "the potty lady" just google it I am not too sure what it is but it is spoken of quite a bit on the todaysparent forum

The 'diaper free' fad is very fashionable right now, but I just find it plain bizarre. All my yuppy friends are doing it, it's totally the in-thing, but it just seems..un-natural to me.

Actually he is still wearing his diapers but he just doesn't like to soil it in his own diaper. He gets grumpy when he is holding it, but each time he finish his busisness in his potty he smiles and he seems content. Thus, it is just a very "natural" thing for us to start him early, and I don't see this as a fashionable thing, it is more like paying attention to your child needs..

Just want to warn you, potty training can be hard! Seems like most here have had easy experiences, but I haven't! We're still working with our 4 year old daughter (turned 4 in Jan). No matter how much encouraging, reminding, talking about it, rewards, etc we did, she still have LOTS of accidents. The last while has been an improvement though as she's only wearing diapers now if we're going to be in the car for a long time.

If things aren't going well at first, you can always take a break and try again in a month or two. This link gives a readiness checklist for toilet training.

A nine week old who gets grumpy when he has to poop? Come on now, be serious. If the diaper-free fad people weren't getting so much media attention, you never even would have thought of trying this.

Have you met my kid or how many babies have you seen?

I'm just sharing my personal experience, I don't understand why you just can't accept what others says. I suppose just because you haven't experience it youself, you would be one of those people hundreds of years ago who laugh at Columbus and belief the world is flat or ridicule Galileo when he try to convince others the universe does not revolve around the world. And in case you can't read, I said he still wears his diapers. I neve said he went diaper free.

And for your information, I was never aware of your so call "diaper-free fad" from the media. You have never met me before, yet you're convince that I got this idea from the media. Hmm, I wonder how you come to this conclusion, because you're full of yourself????

For your information, we only start putting him on the potty with the advice of two other parents (on separate occassion) when we told them our kid turn fuzzy for no reason and when we change his diaper, when he is not wearing his diaper, that's when he relieves himself. One of the kid is 19 now, and the other one is 10, and both of them started when they are around one month old, so this is no recent fad. Anyhow, I'm sure you're going to respond on this, just because "I feel" you're one of those who has to ave the last word. So if you decides to do so, go right ahead, but you wouldn't be getting a respond from me as I'm not interested in hijacking this thread from the OP.

OMG, this brings back memories. We were going to the lake alot and well, you know guys, they pee in the bush. So we were on a holiday and visiting these "la tee da" people and wouldn't you know it, my eldest, about 3 1/2 at the time, pulls his drawers down and starts peeing on some shrubs in their front yard. Can you say

OMG, how embarassing. :D

Best way I've found to potty train is to send my 18-month-old daughter to her grandparents for a week -- she came back fully trained! We still don't know what they did or how they did it, but her father was in the Yugoslavian army as a young man, maybe he used some of their techniques? :)

Our son is coming on to two years old and shows absolutely no inclination towards using the potty whatsoever. We've tried books, singing, candy, rewards... nothing. We're just sort of waiting for the weather to warm up so we can pack him up to Baba & Didi's Potty Training Camp, I guess.
