Hmmm... Interesting, I've been looking for a reason to dump Rogers (and I'm not a big fan of DSL).
Few things you should note:
1. You buy the cable/dsl modem
2. No phone support for ethernet modems?!? What's that all about see HERE (http://www.3web.net/menu/requirements.html)
Don't know. They're the first to offer cable internet competition.

Cool, let us know how much they charge to buy the cable modem etc.. seen their long distance rates? those don't look bad either.

I say be careful going through 3web. For dialup access they will cut off your service if you are amoung the top users for the month. And this is for dialup.
Pretty safe bet they'll do something similar or will limit the amount of bw you can use per month.

I wonder if a person could have some bargaining power with their current ISP. Perhaps getting them to match the price offered by 3web for interent service and Long Distance?

I think they probably want you to buy the TELUS modem kit to get the modem, like nucleus dsl service.

It looks like a great deal. But if you remember 3Web from their beginnings, they used to give out "Free Internet", but you had to have their Ad software running. Not sure, but reading the legalese looks like you may have to have it running here too... It would be a great deal if you didn't though...

Godot,
How are the news servers like with Aserty and it claims on the website it can reach 1.7 Mbps for download
I usually see 1.5 or 1.2 but never 1.7
What speeds are you getting?

I also noticed on 3web's website, that the $25/month rate is if you also subscribe to their long distance service. Otherwise, it's $30/month. Still a good deal though.
There's something else my brother noticed, is that they don't support Macs, even with broadband, which means it's possible that you need to use some kind of software to connect, but I'm not sure about this. I'm just suspecious of the lack of Mac support, unless they meant for ADSL only.
They website isn't that great. There is not enough information.

I read somewhere on their site that they would provide the modem at a 'competitive price' so don't think it's the telus kit.. but how much does it go for anyway? good to have for reference if someone talks to them.

I called and asked tons os questions...here is what I got :
1 - No contract required
2 - No setup fees
3 - 29.00 for "unlimited" internet (I guess NO caps)
4 - 24.95 if you get the Long distance (which has NO monthly fee)
5 - External modem (Linkmax) for ADSL 77.00 + taxes
6 - Had to wait 15 minutes to speak to a sales rep....wonder tech support
7 - They allow you to buy your own modem. I found a similar model on Ebay for US$ 20.00
8 - It takes about 15 days to get the service started
I guess I'll try them and keep my rogers for the first month..if Idon't like it for whatever reason, I'll just cancel. As the CSR said :no contract and no penalty fees for cancellation.

I think no mac support just mean they have no tech there that will help you troubleshoot your mac connection problems. Just like people with linux/*bsd, shaw and telus doesn't support them but they will work.
as for "UNLIMITED", usually that means time(when compare to dialup), not amount you can download. I remember shaw/telus advertise "UNLIMITED" internet before too.

When i called to sign up, i asked many questions...for example one odd thing was that i use roger's and when i asked for cable internet it was not available in my area but when i told him bell was my telephone company he said DSL is available, yet there is no sympatico high speed in my area.
also he said the modem is $77 + tax.
i also asked him if there were any caps and he said no.
quote from online support:
** You are now speaking with Brian Seaman, Let us sign you up!. **
Brian Seaman : Hi. I am a sales agent. Which product did you want?
J : i wanted to inquire about your broadband internet
J : i wanted to know more details, such as availability and speed and caps?
Brian Seaman : what do you need to know?
Brian Seaman : where are you calling from?
J : 905-***-****
J : mississauga
Brian Seaman : btw, there is no bandwidth limit
Brian Seaman : postal code too?
J : thats great
J : L5W 1K9
Brian Seaman : 1 moment I will check
J : thanks'
Brian Seaman : cable isn't available for us in your area
Brian Seaman : re the phone--is Bell your local provider or somebody else?
J: bell
Brian Seaman : good our dsl is available
J : ok..could you tell me your upload and download speeds
Brian Seaman : Maximum 1.5 meg down, 192 kbps up
J : thats great, same as cable?
Brian Seaman : yes
J : also is there a modem rental charge? and what is the total cost per month?
Brian Seaman : we don't rent
Brian Seaman : you have to buy. The one we support is a Broadmax. We sell at our cost $77 plust tax. We cover shipping though
so as i know it there are no bandwidth caps and no modem rental.
as well, my aunt has their dial up service and she always gets connected and she's on everyday.
So for now i think i will try this out for a month or two and see how it goes.

I love cogeco sooo much. Never had problems... well i did with email , would go down a few times a week. The internet service itself would go down maybe twice a year
I just love its speed ... i usually get about 320k/sec constant downloads and about 45k/sec uploads.
Price is the problem... :(

Exactly... $45/month (but for some reason we got a discount by consolidating our TV/internet bills with them, so could be less than that for some?) for 3Mbps service? Cogeco kicks ass. Can't believe I was worried that I couldn't get DSL in our new neighbourhood when we moved earlier this year!

problem with this site is the ISP themselves provide all the information.
so you often see rates of 29.99, then you go to their site just to find out it's only 29.99 for the first 4 months.
plus the info is often out of date.
it's a good site for seeing what options are out there tho.

Do you know if 24.95 is not for 3 months or something? is this the price u will pay till u decide to cancel? I just signed up for bell dsl 1 month free and 4 months at 24.95 but i will try this at the end of 5 months or after my free month depending on the feedback or if bell sucks....
do u know the price of cable modem?? or is everyone going dsl?
If the modem is around 77$, i guess you can make it up in 4 months of saving and the modem is urs.

I'm in the market for DSL, but I really want to know if A) there is ad software required, B) why it requires PC (for ad software or just the usual crap CD you get from ISPs) and C) if I can plug it into a firewall / router like you can with other high speed internet options.

It seems like us cable users have to wait for Rogers to get it's act together. 3web told me to wait 1-2 months to settle some issues with them. Also a non-advertisment software is required. Modems quoted at $60(erricson) and $98(toshiba)

Hey Everyone, I ordered the service on Wed. Sept. 24, and my modem has still not arrived. so I called and guess what....there has been some problems... ....the guy told me i had DSL available and the representative I called today said there is no DSL available!? he told me the guy made a mistake! damn guy how much of a mistake could he make!?!?! I used the online web assistance they have. and i signed up online, so hey could clearly see my number and postal code. BTW they will not be having any CABLE INTERNET anytime soon due to problems with ROGER'S. SO really the only ppl this is available to are people who already have BELL SYMPATICO DSL.....(since they provide internet through the same lines as ROGERS AND BELL.)
SO watch out....AND DO NOT CANCEL YOUR CURRENT ISP until YOUR MODEM ARRIVES..........

Please note that access to our live help desk costs $5.95 per incident, billed to your 3web account."

I can understand why Rogers are playing hard nose. I called them yesterday to cancel my cable internet since i recently switched to BELL (and its much better at least for me). I told them the reason for the switch and my new ISP. He asked what i will do after 3 months at half price but i corrected him and said it was 4 months at half price plus a free month and after that i might switch to this new ISP called 3 web that offers 24.95 unless of course rogers drop their price. He told me straight that they would not drop price due to "integrity". I felt for a while i was leaving an exclusive club.
I guess they are aware that if everyone switch to 3web cable, their business will collapse and also the lines will be too congested especially due to the "neighbourhood" effect which will need millions to upgrade.

Rogers make be making money off 3web in the short run...but think about this....people sign up in loads for 3web cable @ 24.95/29.95 ---> congestion --> irate customers ---> switch to 3 web DSL ---> No more business for rogers.
At 3web price, i am sure there will be many sign ups, including Lite or dial up users. I can see a huge wait for modems and connection pretty soon for 3web.

Also, as just noted by another guy here, technical support is 5.95 per usage !!! Somehow I feel like deceived because they say CLEARLY that you get the same service that Rogers and Bell offers...but Rogers and Bell don't charge for support..!?!?!?

I kind of got that impression when I sent out 3 emails to their Sales department (i.e. I'm a potential customer) and didn't get a reply. I then tried to ring them and couldn't get through.
I then went onto their online chat app (after many attempts somebody showed up) and talked to a guy who basically told me that he was busy and could not even tell me if I can get DSL/cable broadband in my area. He said he'd call me back and never did.
If this is the way they treat potential customers I can't imagine what treatment you'll get when you actually sign-up.
I hope I'm wrong and people who've signed up get their money's worth, but so far this smells like a cowboy outfit to me.

The price looked good but note:
$5.95 - Tech support regardless if this is their fault or not. (I can see some service interruptions service any time company needs extra cash flow..)
Also
$2.95 - a month system access fee to have their long distance plan.

As far as getting through to a CSR I think they're just really busy signing up new customers.
Also you DO NOT have to choose the long distance plan that has a $2.95 monthly fee. You can choose the plan with no monthly fee and slightly higher per minute rates.

Has anyone tried calling sympatico, indicating the kind of offer that the competitors are putting forth at this time and tried to get them to match it in any way ?????????
If they could come close I would stick with them over these fly-by-night providers who are just working off the bell line anyway.

Signed up oct.2, and was told 10-15 days. (also got the $5/mo or so LD plan). Got an 'account name' and password (which was "password') (No idea what/who uses this, website has no customer self service)
Received the startup kit on the 14th or 15th. Contains nothing of value if you already know how dsl hooks up. Says my username is dsl.{10digit phone number}@golden.net (nothing close to the account name). Password is left as an exercise for the reader.
Then on oct 16 or close to that, they called wanting billing information and wanted me to have my phone bill to read some information off of it. We already gave them all this information on the 2nd, so I assume it's 10-15 days from the 16th now. Bastards.
When pressed, they gave us a phone number to call and see who your LD provider is. It wasn't them yet. Guess we just have to keep calling it to see when it changes.
Oh, we also managed to get them to set a password (hopefully for the @golden.net ppp login but not specified)
So now I guess that _maybe_ someone will call me and let me know DSL is hooked up, or mabye I just have to wait and see if lights start blinking on my dsl modem (already have my own).

Just received the damm modem...... installed it and had some trouble to authenticate but in the end it worked fine. But READ the details.
1 - Connection works in a wierd way : I have WinXp and had Rogers, so my "Network connections" had the icon for network status. If I disable my old Rogers, then 3web does not work either. When I log in using 3Web, it shows 2 icons on the system tray !!! Looks really strange.
2 - Went to Cnet bandwidth test to check the download speed... I don't really trust these tests but had nothing to lose. The result was comparable to a 350 K dsl..not the best.
3 - went to the Microsoft website to download a huge file (Visual basic kit - 200 mbytes). The "BEST" speed I could get so far was 55 kbps...kind of sucks !!!
Anyone else here to report their results ?????
ps - NOTE THIS !!!! If you have any trouble installing it, call the main number 1866-438-3932 and ask for a sales rep...if you call the tech support number they will tell you there's a 4.99 charge or 5.95 or something, but FOR NEW DSL CUSTOMERS theres NO CHARGE FOR TECHNICAL SUPPORT. The sales rep told me that it does not say it everywhere because they used to charge customers on dial up, but for DSL there's NO CHARGE.

Don't take the Microsoft site's speed as an indication of your ISP. Microsoft's site is really bad like that. Very slow, despite a 300K+ connection here at the office.

it seems to me that 3web is just a couple guys in a tiny office trying to make money reselling golden.net DSL, who are reselling bell DSL. kinda silly.
personally i'd rather just go with golden.net for 5 bucks more because they have great techsupport

I signed up for the 3Web service after Golden (my current provider) asked me (very politely) to find another ISP cos I was using too much bandwidth.
Yes, Golden do say that there are no dl caps, but my bandwidth for Sept was a combined 82.5 Gigs...I was paying Golden $35/mnth and they had to pay Bell $150 for my usage!! :o
Anyway, after reading some comments here, not sure that I will stay with 3Web for very long...that's if I get my modem :(
I still have my Golden till the end of Oct, so I'm going to run some speed tests when I get home and when I'm on with 3Web I'll run the same tests at the same day/time to come up with some comparisons.
I've been extremely happy with Golden, speeds are amazing, uptime it great, tech is great...if 3Web doesn't compete (not too bothered about tech support...can probably figure it out myself) then I'll beg Golden to take me back.

mark: you know 3web just resells golden.net right? Too funny :)
I'm still SOL with 3web. God help ya if you're in a hurry.
Oct2 Ordered dsl + long distance. Gave them all the info they would
ever need.
Oct 16 They call me, wanting the same info I already gave them.
Oct 27, my dsl line card is installed on my phone line. I try to log in but get invalid username/password.
I phoned Kevin at sales. He tells me the dsl was active oct23 and xfers me to tech support. He's your typical 'evasive' sales guy.
Gil (or someone) at TS tells me my username has some 905 phone number in it instead of my actual 519 number, transfers me to billing.
Billing tells me the phone number is wrong and doesn't really believe me that I have dsl on my line. Says she'll send an email to golden.net to fix my username/password.
Today I call and tech support says my order was "resubmitted" on the 23rd and to wait a few days.
Just now I just got a call back from tech support and she says something was done today, and just wait a few days.
I'm not too impressed.
Meanwhile last night rogers doubled my cable modem speeds.

Just wondering if anyone knows what up with Rogers....I normal get 1mbps...but damn all day for the first time in 5years I'm getting 2.0 and up mbps...I hope this stays this way.... I wonder as well if Rogers somehow found out that I've signed up for business class DSL 2.5 and will be testing them this month starting on the 30th....timing seems kinda odd but I don't think they know these kind of thing or do they?....like some of the folks I'm keeping my Rogers for another month or so while I evaluate the TELUS 2.5 business DSL...not quite $24.95 but only a couple of bux more then Rogers Full speed...after my corporate %30 discount

Beginning October 10th or so, rogers has been 'testing' the higher speeds in certain areas. Read the forums on rbua.org for more info.
Nobody seems to have any hard facts. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Anyone else on rogers, try a cold boot of your modem just in case it speeds up for you.

UPDATE: Oct 28 2003
I called 3Web today to inquire about HIGHSPEED CABLE in my area (Scarborough, ON, M1T). The fellow I spoke to clarified:
- the per incident tech support fee of $5.95 is only for their $9.95 dial up service. All their high speed services include FREE unlimited tech support.
- Modem cost is a Toshiba PCX2500 for $98 + tax. The guy said I cannot supply my own Docsis compliant modem and must use theirs.
- There is an additional $100 installation charge IF Rogers had not been previously installed. This is a fee that Rogers charges, not 3Web. This is to install the right cabling, outlet, etc.
- Newsgroups ARE provided
- There are currently no Upload and Download caps.
- Takes about 3 weeks to get it installed.
So overall the service through 3Web sounds like its still worth it, especially if you're a current Rogers subscriber. In that case you should NOT cancel until you have received the modem in the mail as you will not be billed until 3Web gets your service activated.
I did mention that if I did not previously have Rogers that I should sign up with ROgers then cancel in a month... to avoid the $100 fee, and he said he doesn't condone that course of action.. but it would work. So YMMV with that strategy. :)
Hope that info helps. Let us know what else you guys find out.

So far, I got no problems to report.
My speed has been 1.3 Mbits constantly, no connection problems and the tech support is indeed free.. I already used it.
I agree that the userid is kind of stupid, since they don't tell you the password, which you setup weeks ago when you called to enroll and they did not mention that it would be the password for access. I had some problem to figure that out, but after passed it, no problems at all.

I know I cannot deactivate the service from my computer...
What I meant was that I cancelled the services by calling them...and since I still need to use my Rogers email for a couple of days, they scheduled my "last day" in a week from now. The technician will come here to pick up the modem, which I rented for 3 years and still is not mine.
Funny is that these companies sometimes treat us like *******...when I called Rogers to cancel the service, I told them one reason was the cost, and the fact that I cannot provide my own modem and bla bla...and the girl was insisting that I do not pay for the rental, which is worth 15.00 a month, but Rogers is waiving it..I pay "only" 44.95 for the service..the modem is "free" !
Then I said, all right...I just found a DSl provider that charges 24.95 a month and she said right away : "ohh..thats a temporary promotion...they will increase the rate very soon..."
I don't care at all...if they increase it, I'll just change to another DSL again.. I hate changing emails all the time, and now that I notified all my friends and family to contact me through a webmail, I don't mind changing provider every 3-4 months if necessary... :)
When DSL/cable high speed started, the companies blamed the high cost to a limited number of subscribers, but that "would change" in a short term, as new user would sign up and therefore they could lower the prices to everyone...
After 3 years using highspeed, I noticed only increases in the monthly costs..I began paying 34.95 a month and my last bill was 44.95..time to do something.

I noticed that Primus ADSL has just changed their plans. You can now get ADSL for $35/month but you have to provide your own modem (or you can buy one of theirs). eBay has the modems for pretty decent prices, so it is definitely worth a look.

Hi all ! Here are some news about the 3Web thing... I've been connected for a couple of days, no major problems, except that once in a while I leave the computer alone for 1 hour or 2 hours and when I come back, I see I've been disconnected. Off course I already unchecked the "idle time" thing... still the same happens.
Anyway, it's working, but if you really NEED to use the technical support, be aware that you might end up killing yourself after waiting hours on line for any "tech guy". I had a small problem with my email settings (it's all setup, but "sometimes" it does not send emails, saying that "cannot relay" message....later on it will send)..I tried by all means to contact the support and just gave up for today... will begin my journey 2morrow morning again..
I was asking the salesguy about the cable internet (wanted to know if is available in my area) and here is a copy of our dialog :
Where you see "Michael" thats me.. I tried a different name just in case.... :P
** You are now speaking with Brian, Let us sign you up!. **
Brian : Hi. I am a sales agent. Which product did you want?
michael : Can you tell me if cable internet is available for me ???
Brian : What is your postal code?
michael : M9P3S9
Brian : 1 moment
Brian : That area is serviceable. However I have some bad news
michael : ?
Brian : We are embroiled in a dispute with Rogers so, for the
foreseeable future, we are unable to fulfill cable broadband orders
Brian : However we can get you ADSL
Brian : I would just hve to check your phone # for serviceability
michael : ok...thing is that I signed up for the DSl service, got it for about 1 week and it's pissing me off too much..
michael : sure you gonna tell me to call 18663309511...try
yourself.....after 20 minutes waiting, it just hangs up....
michael : I think i want to cancel the DSL I just got...how can we do so ?
HERE IS THE BEST PART !!!
<span style='color:red'>Brian : I know. It is frustrating. I don't like our phone system either. It sucks. Please don't take it out on me. I only work here. I am not management
michael : I think i want to cancel the DSL I just got...how can we do so ?
Brian : To cancel, please send an email to cancelme@3web.net </span>
So, once again, if you consider technical support a major point, don't you dare signing up for their dsl....for me, as long as the web browsing is working, I'll stick to it for a while... but I'll keep an eye open for other DSL companies too...
Good luck

I believe he's referring to the domain name registration (TLD) i.e. www.yourname.com. The 1and1.com webhosting is free but you have to pay to have them register your own domain (or you can register your domain through a domain registry service).

3 connections: ~350 but it seems to jump as high as 750 at times
can't establish a 4th connection
Retention seems to be about 14 days.
a.b.cd.image.xbox has 1,501,111 posts
completion on Oct 27 posts looks pretty good.
I'm not waiting around 2 hours for it to download current posts.
seems to have the good news groups
Rogers:
Header download is around 2.80 Mbits/s
Article dowload is about the same speed.
There is a 3 connection limit here too.
Some days header download is really really slow but not too often.
news server retention is about 2 maybe 3 days.
a.b.cd.image.xbox has 159,510 posts
completion is excellent for 48 hrs. After that it's all incomplete.
has the good news groups
Sympatico:
Header download is around 1.40 Mbits/s
Article dowload is about the same speed.
Supports at least 5 or more connections (I couldn't find enough complete large posts to find out)
news server retention is maybe 3 days.
a.b.cd.image.xbox has 35,387 posts
completion is non-existant. It's all incomplete.
has the good news groups, not that it matters here
3web:
I checked incoming ports 21, 25, 110 and they were not blocked.
Outgoing port 25 is not blocked either.
Rogers:
no port blocking.. well no important ones anyway.
Sympatico:
pretty sure they block 25 both incoming and outgoing
didn't test for others, I think its fairly common knowledge what they block anyway.
Speed tests: http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
3web/golden:
Communications 1.3 megabits per second
Storage 163.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 6.3 seconds
Subjective rating Good
Rogers:
Communications 2.5 megabits per second
Storage 311.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.3 seconds
Subjective rating Great
Sympatico:
Communications 1.4 megabits per second
Storage 167.3 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 6.1 seconds
Subjective rating Good
I don't use anyone's email, web hosting, etc so I can't report on it other than I hate them all.
Let me know if there's something else that needs testing.

I'm gonna give 3web a call today and get signed up... hopefully they will be okay with me supplying my own modem.

And thanks seanster! that newsgroup review really helps.

It's already been mentioned but check out www.canadianisp.com. One particular company to check out is Golden Triangle

Welcome kevin! Please hold while we contact a representative. If a representative does not respond in few seconds, then he/she is not available at this time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
kevin : hello
** You are now speaking with Brian, Let us sign you up!. **
Brian : Hi. I am a sales agent. Which product did you want?
kevin : im just inquiring abuot the dsl service
kevin : first off, how much is the service if i already own a modem
kevin : hello?
Brian : 24.95/month for long distance customers
Brian : 29.95/month for non-ld customers
kevin : for the long distance plan, do i have any obligation to use it?
kevin : or is there another charge for the long distance plan?
Brian : if u r not a big ld caller, I'll put u on our no-fee plan. No montly fee and only 7 cents a minute for N Amer calls 24/7
kevin : this no-fee plan use is so that IF i do make a longdistance call in north america, it costs 7 cents
kevin : and what about calls to asia?
Brian : yes right
Brian : Asia is ridiculously cheap. I don't know how we make money
kevin : whats the rate?
Brian : 5cents a minute for Japan, Hong Kong & Singapore
Brian : 8 cents to PRC
kevin : how would i pay? through direct payment via visa
kevin : or wuld i get billed
Brian : yes
kevin : direct payment?
Brian : that too
kevin : so i would be able to get billed or pay via visa?
Brian : pay via visa. There is no billing.
kevin : i read on the site that theres a 5.xx tech support fee
kevin : each time i call
kevin : that true? or is that only for your dial up service
Brian : no. Not for high speed customers or dial-up customers who are TLC subscribers
kevin : so i get free tech support during business hours?
Brian : tech support is M-F 9am-midnight, weekends 11 am-9 pm
Brian : why don't you just call me?
kevin : am i able to get a cancellation number to give to 3web
kevin : to speed up my activation?
kevin : and is there an activation fee
Brian : call Bell. What would we have to do with getting a cancellation number?
Brian : no fee
kevin : well as a past sympatico user they have cancellation numbers for users that are cancelling
kevin : and my current isp used that number to speed up my activation of line since im coming from the same type of lines
kevin : so it took 2 days since cancellation to connect online
kevin : and from what i know in order to re-open a dsl signal on a line it would take about a week
Brian : I am very busy. If you want to get more information about our product, please call me.
Brian : Can you please call me now at 18668917807 ext. 3250?
kevin : you can take your time answering the questions or whatever. i do not want to use the phone right now
kevin : i just have a few more questions
kevin : if bell changes their speed from their current 1.5/3xx to whatever
kevin : would 3web do the same
kevin : and have the same change
Brian : I don'[t know
kevin : or if bell prices went up would your prices go up?
Brian : I don't know
kevin : from the people that have ordered the service, they complained about slow speeds and activation
kevin : nd other stuff took a long time
kevin : are these issues resolved now or are you guys still experiencing the same things?
Brian : I have a customer on the phone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that...was great "your party has left this session" then i try to connect to the online help crap again...and guess what it brings me to some crap about signing up for the help...hes lucky that i cant get back through . good thing he gave me his extension ...11:10pm here in toronto and hes "on the phone with a customer"

by the way, at least one good thing for those planning to sign up for 3Web and that don't have a router...they allow multiple connections..
I just got my desktop, and 2 laptops to get all connected using the same userid, through my hub.
Not all DSl providers will allow you do that...

Nov 12th, 2003, 04:31 PM
im not sure but a few isps changed their ways of logging on (dsl) bell and other "bell lines resellers" allow you to log on using the same userid and password for people that have more than one computers.
anyways, i managed to get the same online rep. to talk to me again and his excuse was "i had too many windows opened, my computer froze, i had to reboot."
activation takes abuot 2 to 3 weeks for dsl even though you're coming from bell sympatico (from my knowledge you're allowed to get a cancellation number if you're switching to a reseller. the use of this number is to speed up activation of the line to 1 to 2 days)
activation for cable takes about 5 to 6 weeks; he had no mention about rogers not cooperating or anything of that sort.
and during business days, mondays to fridays; business hours 9am to 9pm they have only 16 tech support agents working MAX. and during the weekends 9am to 6pm its only down to 4 to 6 agents.
if you have the time and patience to deal with this small reseller then this is a good isp service for its price. if you find your current isps' tech support and customer care already a big piss off already, then i highly recommend that you DO NOT go for this isp. just my two cents.

I'm having no problems with 3web. For $24.99 a month for high-speed DSL it's a BARBAIN!

Hi,
Just wanted to inform people that I got kicked of 3WEB highspeed DSL service. After claiming that they offer unlimited service.
I know people mentioned that the Cable connection was capped, and but to my knowledge DSL wasn't. Although, I did take it with a grain of salt, and still tried out the service. Worth a shot at $24.95.
Anyhow, they didn't have the courteous to tell me that they had discounted my service. It took me 2 days of calling them every 4-6 hours asking what's going on. They finally told me that I had downloaded 16gigs.
I asked about the sales person saying they offered unlimted services. The Billing Person replied by saying that's for being online unlimted amount of time, not bandwidth.
I then asked what the Bandwidth is, and he replied saying that it was 2 GIG Download Limit a MONTH. I was quite shocked, and I asked the same question again 2 more times, and still got the 2 gig download limit.
Oh well, I'm not really surprised it happened, but I didn't really appreciate them beating around the bush about my disconnection, and not taking the time to call me and telling me that I got disconected.
I spoked to somone named David in Billing.
And of course, he may be mistaken about the download limite per month. But, 2 gig a month is what i was told.
take care

Just thinking that downloading the headers on some newsgroups will quickly eat up that 2gig limit.
2gigs sufficient for browsing and light downloads. Jesus, even downloading mp3s will give people grief.
I wonder if they'll pull a Bell and start charging people extra with minimum notification for exceeding the download caps.

humm..I think we have enough to consider a legal action against 3web.....don't we ?
In my case, service is working fine, but my concern is that they charged me "by mistake" some extra 16.xx and I've emailed them 2 times already asking about it....instead of an answer, I got charged again for the next month....
Anyways, I just sent them a very nasty email...if I don't hear from 3web within 5 days, I'll call my visa and see what I can do to prevent upcoming charges and will contact the BBB.
Let's keep posting here, guys......

anyone know if their BroadMAX HSA dsl modem is worth the $7# dollars they were charging? I'm considering returning mine and buying another if they don't connect me soon.

When I signed up with 3web they said there were no bandwidth restrictions. In any case, I will confirm with them to make sure. With regards to the service itself, it was pretty straightforward to get it up and running. The speeds are not bad. I usually get speeds in the 0.8 to 1.3 Mbps range.
One thing I have noticed, however, is problems with file sharing. I use WinMX and I'm unable to get many results when I search. Also, people cannot download from me at all. When I was with Sympatico this was not a problem. Has anyone else had trouble with file sharing??

I called 3web to confirm the caps and the rep. told me it was 25GB per month. Based on the variety of responses people on this forum have gotten from 3web, it seems each rep. picks a random number and spits it out over the telephone.
If the situation with P2P file sharing doesn't improve soon, i'll have to switch back to sympatico.

This sounds like port throttling to me. Lots of independent ISPs tended to do that to reduce the load on their networks.

I've sent 4 emails threatning them and got no response.... they overcharged me some amount and simply wont refund it..

Service is ok..works well, but sometimes for some unknown reason I cannot authenticate..the software connects, and keeps trying to verify username and password and after 30 seconds or so it kicks me out...I wait 1 hour or something and can log in without problems...

ya, I definitely noticed that their "TECH SUPPORT" has gotten more and more hostile over the months. Brian's also their coffee guy/secretary/accountant I hear.
thanks for the offer, laptop-tech, but does it matter at all the brand names of these dsl modems as long as they support g.dmt and g.lite?
does anyone else think the broadmax modem is worth keeping?

I called a couple of DSL providers some time ago...most support one or both protocols and do not require much else....brand names vary based on what they have in hand, I think....if they have BroadMax, thats the best..if they have Terayon, thats the best then...and so on...
I'm still hanging on with 3web.....it's still working... but I did not get my refund nor a response from anyone in the billing, even after 10 emails...

Hey Everyone,
Just a quick update for you.... I've been with 3Web for around 2 weeks now and so far so good. No calls to cancel my service for caps and no major outages.
I am connected 24/7 and have only experienced a couple of disconnects - nothing major my router just kept fighting until their system came back up. (usually a couple of minutes)
It's certainly not as good as my Rogers service but for $25 a month I'm willing to take the slow downs during peak hours... I get 1.4M off peak and around 500kbs during peak hours.
That's worth the $25 a month so I'll stick around for a while.
One thing I do know is that if I ever start a new company I would hire Brian.... do everything from cleaning to sales and tech support, can't go wrong!!! ;)
Later!

let's hope that you won't be opeing a new company. Even if you do... I hope by that time, you would've already realized the importance of "customer service".
Cheaping out of staff is the worst thing for a company. You'll end up losing more money than what you've saved.

3Web thread...back from the dead......
Just an update...I just checked my Visa bill and noticed a charge by 3Web Mississauga of $21.35....figured out that it's 19.95 + gst...then went to the 3web website and now their DSL or Cable services are 19.95 for the first 2 or 3 months..but for some reason they automatically lowered my plan too...
That's cool and weird ! Now I pay 19.95 for my DSL.

Can someone who has 3web give me some details on setting up my 3web dsl service ? I've already contacted them and they will setup my account next week. I have a dsl modem. What additional information do I need to enter into my computer to create my 3web dsl connection ?

Has anyone tried these DSL service on a Business Line?
Any company like 3web or Primus would be willing to charge Residential rate for a Business line? My use is very light, just don't want to hold up a phone line and it's not worth it for me to go with Business line rates.

if you look back to some earlier pages in this topic you'll see that someone has already talked about the logon procedures.
i ordered this sevice a while ago and there was a mix up with my modem being sent out from them, but i had another modem and i used that to connect to them without anyone from 3Web telling me what my login details were. ;)

Although I'm paying for the faster 3.5Mb connection.
Pretty stable, and I've only hit the 20 up 20 down cap once, and they never did charge me for it.

I had this 3Web for about 2-3 months in total....I'm cancelling it now to switch to Bell (part of the deal with the Dimension 2400 with free dsl modem) also because lots of times I could not authenticate to their servers... every single time it happened I called them and was told they were having some problems with the servers and no users could log in anymore, until other users logged off and they could do some changes there......!?
Some of times, my speeds were about 1.3 Mbits, BUT SEVERAL times also it came down to .4 Mbits...and stayed like that for hours, days sometimes...
Tech support is disgusting, billing does not respond to 500 emails sent. My Xmas was very nice as I was forced to watch TV, since I had no DSL for almost 2 days.
Pretty cheap, but consider only if you're NOT really thinking about reliability...if you're the guy who surfs the net 2 hours a day, should be okay..for those of us that spend 18 hours on the net everyday, 3Web is a costly torture.
just my opinion....

I called 3Web last week to get hooked up. I came home today to find that it had been installed on my line. I put in the username/password and I was surfing away. I did a speed test that showed I was getting 1.4mbs. Not bad for $25/month. I just hope I continue getting this speed.
thanks,

Hmmm. So I just tested my Rogers cable speed at it seems great. But I guess it's because I'm also in a new development with 3 people on the street.
Speed
2.7 megabits per second
Communications 2.7 megabits per second
Storage 326.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.1 seconds
Subjective rating Great
BUT...
I think I could do without the $50/month fee. I'm pretty sure 10 gig limit would be fine but I would like to be sure before I switch to whoever. Does anybody know of any good software that would help track my UL/DL other than having to manually record my connection UL/DL numbers from my systray connection icon each time?

Read ALL ABOUT IT! on dslreports.com
3Web has a ridiculous cap like 2 gig/month. When they say unlimited internet access, they mean unlimited ONLINE TIME! NOT unlimited transfers!
At least that's what I've heard.. I could be repeating what someone might have said, in which case I'm very sorry. Too lazy to read through 11 pages of text.

Hi,
Just wanted to inform people that I got kicked of 3WEB highspeed DSL service.
But, 2 gig a month is what i was told.
take care
If you're downloading 16gig per month, then you're probably doing something illegal anyway.

I've been with 3Web for a few months now, and I must say that I'm pleased...*goes to knock on wood*
I use their long distance so my total bill for the DSL service is just over $26 with tax....a great deal if you ask me.
Plus, the long distance is really good for me. I'm from England so I call there a lot (@ 6 cents / min) and my wife calls BC where her dad is, so it's great for us.

so far, only a couple of ppl are actually satisfied with this
and interms of bandwidth and etc, they've been telling me that there is no cap (from that damned online-chat thing, what do they know...)
and i cant get through to tech support without a 'CY' pin number? =/
well anyways, if someone is kind enough to call them and ask for some specifics, such as maximum bandwidth a dsl user is allocated each month and give them a scenario such as "if i download 50gigs in one month, what would happen? is that in violation of the contract?"
i'd say 50 gig a month isn't too awful or crazy if you do broadcasting, video streaming or net conferencing all day
just a lil excerpt from a chat with one of those sales rep.:
xxxxxx : 10 movies a day would usually result in 70gigs a day. so from just normal circumstances, 50gigs a month wouldnt be too intense as a user right?
Monty : That is still a large capacity of downloading and uploading/month. We offer more than Bell on that area.
mm some what equivocating, whatever. if someone can get a hold of a tech. guy then it'd be great
thanks

Well I can also tell you that I'm using 3web and they're good. I have no idea what their tech support is like or what is the waiting time, I've never had a problem with the service in my 3 months of use. I don't use their email or newsgroups. However p2p is not filtered, I've used grokster and I'm using bittorrent. I've downloaded over 20GB/month without any problems. The service works without major interruptions like sympatico used to have when I used it for a couple of years around year 2000.
No negative points to talk about really. If they kick me out for traffic, I won't even mind since I've saved a good amount already.

Not tired contemplating so much? :)
In response to your Q., I live in Thornhill. Yes, I've been upgraded but it took effect only on my upload. Right now I get 110KB/s d/l and 65KB/s upload - pretty good ratio for Bittorrent. My line can't handle more than that, I verified this with dsl modem stats, I'm pretty sure I'd sync at 3mbps if not for the line. Compared to Rogers (5 months ago when I was using it) which gave me 20KB/s upload 3web is much better for half the price.
So I'd say I'm pretty happy with 3web.
