Hey guys,

I've been on a two year contract using Telus Mobility (Talk-to-Me plan) that I've enjoyed and am happy with.

In two to three months, this contract will expire. I've heard about the number portability, but I'm not exactly sure of what it is. Does it allow me to take my existing number and use it on another network (say Rogers even though Telus doesn't use SIM cards)?

As of now, I'm really happy with my current plan and service, so if I plan to stay on Telus, would it be possible to continue on this plan, but not on a contract? I am at school every four months, and in that four months, I rarely use my cellphone. So if I'm not on a contract, I can possibly disable the service during that time to save some money.

Currently, I'm open to any advice. Would it be better for me to switch to other networks and use GSM phones if I can get a similar plan, or should I stay with Telus.

If I do indeed stay with Telus, would I be able to just buy my own phone, and have them activate it on the network to avoid signing a contract?

Also, I'm looking for recommendations on a cellphone. I want a cellphone with an okay camera, preferably sliding, and can play mp3 ringtones.

Hi Luckyinfil,

I can't help with all your questions, but....

Number portability allows you to take your current number with to another carrier, but you'll have to get a new plan, new phone, new contract etc.

Not sure about the contract details, but for my plan (with Bell) after the contract expired I went onto a month to month contract with them that I can cancel whenever (as long as I give them 30 days notice). Your plan may be similar - watch out though, all those great promo things you got when you signed up probably won't continue after the contract expires. (I learned that the hard way)

You may be able to suspend your service for a period of time, but there is probably a charge for that.

Check your contract for the terms and conditions you are held to.

yup...just as the above poster said...there is a fee involved and you might still have to pay the system access fee...best to call telus and ask them...i have done this with them before...but can't remember how much i paid.

yes you can but then again there is a charge. i think it's around $25. you could always say your phone broke, blah, blah, blah and see if one of the telus dealers will get it authorized for you for free.
