Say car A wants to do a left turn over the solid yellow line in the middle to get to tim hortons. is that legal? i didn't get a ticket or anything, it's just that i keep seeing people turning left into a local esso like that a couple meters before an intersection that says no left turns. i keep thinking to myself "if you can't turn left 3 meters ahead, what makes you think you can turn left here?"

well, if it says no left turns, then i guess it's illegal?

I think it is okay to turn left in this case, because the no left turn is for the intersection. The no left turn there may not related to the Tim Horton here. The intersection may be a one-way street so that you cannot turn left. Nothing against you to make a left turn here to go into the Tim Horton.

i always thought the rule was:
if it's a single solid yellow line then you can turn left no problem...
if double solid yellow line, then it's illegal unless there is a break in the line...
is this not right?!?

well, what i was thinking is the solid yellow line may be preventing you from making a left turn, because you're never supposed to cross a solid yellow line... or even a solid white line as a matter of fact.

i found the answer (from BC driving handbook, but assume it should apply to other jurisdictions):
Turns in the middle of a block
Most drivers expect other traffic to turn at an intersection.
Sometimes you may wish to turn left in the middle of a block,
such as into a driveway. While it is safer to plan your route so
that you can make a right turn, you may turn left — including
turning left over a solid double yellow line — provided you do this
carefully and safely and don’t impede other traffic, and there are
no signs prohibiting such turns.

I always thought the solid yellow and white lines meant you were not allowed to change into the next lane.
