My mom's friend is upset because their kids were told they aren't able to attend AY Jackson Secondary School in North York. They moved up there to attend this school and now they are told they can't due to their location (west of Victoria Park, north of Finch).
What I'm wondering is, where can I find the school district area so they can attend? Searching on google didn't find much info. The mother doesn't speak english and needs my mom's help (and she doesn't really use the internet much). I think they need to know by this weekend (school is closed i guess on weekends).
I guess an alternative for them would be going to Earl Haig also in North York. Was wondering what's the area for that school as well.

Is your friend a fob?
A website showing the different zoning areas would be very useful. Your friend still can get accepted at AY even if he isn't in the zoning area. It all depends if the principal likes you or not I'm assuming. When I went to HS my school in my zoning area was Mary Ward but I got accepted to Brebeuf after having a talk with the principal.

Aren't their other ways of getting in other than living in the region, like apply to one of their programs? Alot of my old high school friends applied to gifted math and science to get into school that is not their home school.

Yes, he is a FOB from China I think. :)
The son speaks english as he was the one who made the call to the school, suppose to be attending Gr.9 next year, but the mother doesn't speak any english. Not sure the details though. (I heard they have Junior High in North York area, followed by High School, unlike some other areas of Toronto which is just High School after Elementary School).
A website would be perfect

They need to do more homework. AY Jackson does not take grade 9 anyway. It is for Grade 10 to 12.

There is a "neighbourhood" in the bottom of the document. That may indicate what its area is.

Should be able to apply for optional attendance and show your interest.
Kids in the Don Valley Junior High School went to AY Jackson (that's Don Mills & Finch area)

What's so great about this school?
Math and Science, known to have better marks in the North York area.
I honestly don't think the High School plays that much of an importance in Ontario ... go wherever, get good marks.

What's so great about this school?
Predominately Asian, good esl program and known to be stronger in the maths and sciences.

I went to AY Jackson nearly 10 years ago and even then it was hugely popular with Asians. We would constantly hear of people moving into the area just to have their kids attend. Personally I thought it was actually quite a good school when compared to some of the others in the area that friends went to.

On the TDSB site, there is an address entering thing and you can find out the schools that house is supposed to attend.

YEP, here it is: http://www.tdsb.on.ca/about_us/street_guide/street.asp
The "find your school" search box doesn't work properly (sometimes). But you can always find the street in the school attendance area with the other search button.
Good luck,
C.

Thanks, that's what i was looking for!
How does the optional attendence work exactly, and what are the chances of getting in if going that route?

If she really wants her son to go to AYJ, just use a friend's address to register.
AY Jackson is a good school academically but lacks of diversity (ALL ASIAN! You won't see a white/black person in 5/6 of your classes) and school spirit.

Funny, I guess it's changed a lot since mr chococrazy went there (let's not get into how many years ago that was.)

That's weird. I used to live at Jane & St.Clair and went to school near Dufferin Mall with no problem.

Off topic, but why? I went to MW 1st+2nd year, then got forced to go to brebeuf. Found MW to be much more interesting. Plus it sucked waking up so early to go to brebeuf. Plus they tore down the school and moved us to an even further school, which lead to waking up even earlier to go to school.. But I'm sure its nicer now with the new school.

Optional attendance works like a "waiting list". If you don't live in the area, and if they have space then they will fill it on a first come basis.
Your chances of getting in depends on the program and the popularity of the school. Example, you have a great chance in getting in through optional attendance into the french track of a secondary school (not too many kids want to do high school in french). The optional attendance for regular programs (english) is much harder but never impossible.
Some schools are so popular, that the otional attendance is done through a "ballot" system. So, you really never know.... better go to the school and have a chat with the Principal.
Another suggestion, if AY starts in grade 10, and the kid is going to grade 9... why not trying to get him into one of the AY feeder schools??
