Well I have my new computer coming in next week, and am wondering if I should go ahead and install XP or take the plunge with Vista?

If you "need" it, yes.

My guess is that you don't need it, so it really doesn't make a difference to you. Stick with windows XP as long as you can. XP is a very stable system and until Vista releases its first service pack, I wouldn't touch it.

If you're starting from scratch, might as well go with Vista; you've got nothing to lose but time if you're loading it on a brand new machine, and if you end up disliking it, going back to XP won't be too much trouble.

Oh no .... not again .... There are already several threads regarding this topic. You will only see peeps debating but it never arrives to any conclusions .... I personally think it's largely personal preference.

IMO: go with XP.
i bought a laptop, and it came loaded with vista, I found it to be slow, even on a new laptop. so it took me 4-5hours to remove vista and install xp.

OP is going to be using a dual core based comp with a lot of RAM based on previous postings. I'm running Vista (check my sigs for specs) and it runs flawlessly

Vista owns XP. It's only slow if you have a POS computer...which is your own problem.

+1 I'm getting a copy of XP Pro soon to replace Vista on my machine.

I think my computer is okay (see sig) but Vista is still causing sluggishness here and there that I never experienced before.

If you are building a new PC with 2GB of RAM, yes, go ahead, Vista is faster than XP

for old PC user, make sure that you can find the drivers for Vista before you upgrade.

I wondered about vista vs xp also . purchased almost an exact same system pre-loaded with vista and compared it to my xp . vista is much slower in every aspect and i dont like the overall look and feel .

As mentioned , there are lots of posts on the topic but from experience with two almost exact same systems running one against the other , xp came out on top big time .

Personally I like XP more, but if you CAN, install XP first and then Vista and that way you can dual boot and have both! After that you can decide which you like more.

I just got my Asus G1S notebook and it has Vista installed, and there are some things I like about it I will admit that in the one day I've owned the machine I've cosidered formatting and putting XP Pro on it. First I was thrown off by the little differences, like where stuff is located or how you really have to dig deep to change some settings. I was almost amused by the "Cancel or Allow" promts, if one Apple add speaks any truth that has to be the one. I did turn that off pretty fast so that solved that.

I will say my biggest gripe with Vista is how some apps don't run or act strange in it. For the most part it was nothing big but then I tried to install Alcohol 120% and got a blue-screen which wouldn't go away which was only solved by restoring my install with the recovery CD that came with the notebook, not much fun. Also, Acrobat Pro 8 doesn't like Vista, so that is off my machine.

So if you do go with Vista, really double check if the programs you need will run. IF you want to be safe go with XP for now.

Let alone the cash involved since I have 3 boxes to upgrade but from what I've heard and seen, there isn't much improvement over XP (except maybe a prettier interface) to really justify the cost. Hardware and software upgrades may also require for my case.

IMO, XP to Vista is not as big a jump like from 98 to XP or even 2000 to XP, more like a 95 to 98 or slightly better but for sure not a gaint step forward.

Okay, to sum up the several schools of thoughts here...

School #1
Vista is a piece of crap and should be avoided completely. There is no need to justify this because I say so. I've never used Vista in my life and I've never actually read up on the new features and changes. However, from what I've heard and see, I'm just going to hop on the "Vista sucks" bandwagon and go along with what the majority of ignorant people are saying.

School #2
Vista is slower than XP on general and requires a top-notch computer to perform on par with it. Given the poor performance and high cost, it's better to just stick with XP for now until they can hammer out the problems in Vista (i.e. SP1).

School #3
My computer came with Vista and it feels really slow for some reason. Maybe I should downgrade to XP for the time being. The changes are fairly underwhelming and not worth the hassle. UAC is really annoying and silly. I'm reinstalling XP.

School #4
If your computer comes with Vista, then just keep it. The difference between XP and Vista is pretty small and there's really no point in downgrading to XP.

School #5
Vista is faster than XP if you have a pretty decent computer (i.e. anything from the past year or two). It doesn't take a kickass computer to run Vista. Some of the new features are also worth the upgrade, namely the interface and SuperFetch. Vista is drastically faster than XP if you have 2 GB of memory and let SuperFetch eat away at that. Drivers are also pretty good considering how long Vista has been out for. All of my hardware have working drivers right now. Game performance? Another driver issue. It's only 2% or so slower than XP so it's pretty negligible.

Pick your poison :D

512 on the ram

I would thoroughly expect Vista to be slower on a machine with 512MB of RAM. In fact, you probably don't realise it's slow as well, but your XP machine would be a lot peppier with more RAM, too! I would take the 512MB stick from the Vista machine and throw it in the XP machine, and buy 2GB for the Vista. You will enjoy both more.
