Hi guys

I did a quick search for the info I need, but couldn't come up with anything.

I'll be travelling with my iPods (Nano and Shuffle) and I went down to the store to get a wall outlet --> USB adapter so that I can charge my iPods from a normal wall outlet. The thing is... the Apple one was $42 after taxes. So I was going to go home and post here to see if I could find one cheaper. Then I popped into a small shop near the Apple store and guess what? They had one in there for $7.

Now... this unit says this

Output: .5 - 12V --- 1A Max

It also says

"Compatible with iPod Shuffle, iPod Mini, iPod Photo and iPod with click wheel"

But it says nothing about the Nano.

For $7 I was willing to take a chance plus I can get a full refund if I need it. I normally don't buy cheapo stuff but I thought I'd roll the dice here.

Will this little adapter work with my Nano? Is it a really bad idea to even use a third party 110V - USB adapter?

I did a Google search on this and some guys were saying that they 'switch to the Apple firmware' before charging like this. They say that they hold the Menu button for 10 seconds to do this. Is this common/necessary?

Any help is appreciated. My Nano was a gift and I really don't want to fry it. The Shuffle is the one I use most and I don't want to fry it either.

My iPod Nano is Model MA497C

Version 1.1.3

8 GB

Is it 1st or 2nd Gen? Hmmmm... not sure.

Here's something weird. I was sure it's 2nd Gen, but at this link, Apple says their charger only works with the aluminum 2nd Gen iPods! Mine is flat black. This must mean black aluminum...

Yes it would work....

But then again u got to be careful of the quality, some of the cheap stuff could blow your ipod (especially those cheap china crap)...

I use a cheap powered usb 2.0 hub to charge my Nano (1st & 2nd gen) with no problems.

Ok guys, thanks for the input. I was down on College St. today and asked a few store guys about it and no one down there had heard of a cheap convertor frying a Nano or any iPod. However, I will probably just take the shuffle so that if it does fry, it's less of a hit.

Thanks again
