View Full Version : RFD Cool Wall: Car #40 - Buick Lucerne

Well last week's vote wasn't the largest ever, but it was pretty overwhelming. The Lotus Exige was added as the newest sub-zero car on the RFD Cool Wall;

http://www.robertphillips.ca/rfdcoolwall.gif

This week is another entry from the domestic market. I've always had a soft spot for Buick since the first car I bought was a Riviera, but for most people they are cars for senior citizens. The Lucerne CXS, powered by a 275HP northstar V8, is the very top of the Buick lineup. Is it a cool car? You decide on the RFD Cool Wall!

http://www.robertphillips.ca/lucerne.jpg

As always voting will continue until Saturday (sorry for posting late this week), and if you have a car you want to see added just send me a PM.

There is no new technology that makes this car cool, the looks aren't appealing at all. There is nothing new or good on this car that would make me even take a double look at it. I dunno what Buick is thinking

WTF would anyone besides George Bush want a DTS? GM should kill that one too. Also DTS is on a different platform.

You know there's a reason why no car maker other than GM puts high powered engines into transverse engine FWD cars?

DTS is on the exact same platform. Sure, the VINs say something different, but it's the same good ol' G body platform with its usual quirks. They're both built on the same line in the same plant.

i don't know why people knock the FWD V8's. Sure there is torque steer, but at the same time I'll beat 90% of cars (or more) at the lights with a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds.... My Impala SS has the FWD 5.3L and i'm not complaining

A 1.3L RX8 would smoke you around a track and it's a rwd and also looks better!

A 1.3L RX8 would smoke you around a track and it's a rwd and also looks better!

Try fitting 5 people in a RX8, with luggage and everything.

Also, let's talk about your 1.3L RX8. You might, like a good fool, believe displacement is a proxy for fuel efficiency.

Impala SS, 5.3L V8, 4 speed auto, curb weight 1683 kg. 12.9 L/100km city, 8.1 L/100km highway.
Mazda RX8, 1.3L rotary thing, 6 speed manual transmission, curb weight 1389 kg. 12.8 L/100km city 9.2 L/100km highway.
Mazda RX8, 1.3L rotary thing, 6 speed automatic, curb weight 1404kg. 12.9 L/100km city 8.6 L/100km highway.

Interesting, no?

That 5.3L V8 you are sneering at, moving 280kg more with two fewer gears, nonetheless gets marginally better fuel economy than your RX8.

puff_daddy_58_99
Jul 5th, 2007, 11:35 PM
and the rx8 is more expensive, and honestly when was the last time you raced around a track with it? Most of the time you are looking for straight line acceleration, and most of the time you never push the car close to the limit.

And Vivien is right, it's nice to have a big family car with a huge trunk and loads of room with the added ability to smoke your mazda at the lights. As far as looks go, I won't deny that the RX-8 looks good, but I prefer the sleeper look. Unless you know what you are looking at, you would assume that it's just a regular old impala.

Seriously uncool. This is grandpa's car, LOL. I'd put in some more comments but I'm tired (seriously not just because of the yawn factor of this grandpa-mobile, LOL)... Maybe later, lol. The only interesting/cool Buick nowadays is the Enclave. They might as well make the Enclave a GMC and make it to the Acadia as the Denali is to the Yukon. Then axe the whole Buick line because it's way too borr-ring!

The point is, if your Impala SS, which I agree is a sleeper and fast on the straights, is a RWD it would be a better car.

It's not that FWD is bad, it's that a V8 300+ hp car is BETTER as a RWD.

The only reason they made the Impala SS FWD is cost. Share the same drive train and FWD = Cheap V8 = attractive.

You can't argue that it's ideal to put that much power and weight to the front wheels.

So the H platform and the K platform are actually different names for the G?

Yes.

Quick GM history lesson. In the late 1970s/early 80s, The Man Who Destroyed GM decided to convert all GM cars to FWD.

This resulted in the following:
- MY1984 - Cadillac coupe/sedan de Ville, Fleetwood (the Fleetwood name later went back to an RWD B/D body car) - VIN code K
- MY1985 - high-end 'full-size' cars - Buick Electra, Oldsmobile 98 - VIN code C
- MY1986 - lower-end 'full-size' cars - Buick LeSabre, Oldsmobile Delta 88, Pontiac Bonneville - VIN code H
(The W body coupes were launched in 1988, and so were other things, but that's irrelevant)
How different those three are, I don't know.

In MY1991, the C body cars were redesigned, and the Buick got renamed Park Avenue. This was followed in MY1992 by redesigns to the H cars. The K cars probably got changed around then too.

Then in MY1995, GM launched the G platform on the Buick Riviera and Olds Aurora. The G platform can be recognized by its battery and fusebox under the rear seat and its gas filler cap in an usual-for-GM location, high-up right behind the driver's side C pillar.

In MY1997, the Park Avenue was redesigned on a slightly modified version of the G platform that has the battery under the hood. I believe it kept its C VIN. The Olds 98 was dropped.

In MY1998, the Cadillac Seville got moved to the G platform. Sometime around then, the Buick Riviera got killed.

In MY2000, the Pontiac Bonneville and Buick LeSabre got moved to the short-wheelbase version of the G platform (keeping VIN code H), while the Cadillac DeVille went to the long-wheelbase version with VIN code K.

In MY2001, the second generation Olds Aurora was launched, keeping VIN code G. It was discontinued after MY2003.

The Cadillac Seville was discontinued after MY2004, replaced by the RWD Sigma STS. The Buick Park Avenue got killed after a brief production run in MY2005, followed by the Bonneville.

In MY2006, the Lucerne, VIN code H, replaced the LeSabre, but shared the long wheelbase with the DTS, which replaced the DeVille and kept VIN code K.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few models here and there, and a few years may be off, but that's the basic history of the GM G platform. If you know what you're looking for (the two things I've said above), it's very easy to identify the G body cars...

In North America, it would probably get the LS or the replacement for the Northstar, if that's still being planned. (I haven't been keeping up on GM rumours in the last month or so)

From what I understand, though, the Chinese tend to like their engines smaller, kinda like Europeans.

Try racing a 335i, it will RAPE YOU.
Vinshu Procede 335 can murder any car on the street in it's price range.
$ 51,600 for the 335I, then $1000 for the Procede ECU chip.

You can blame Buick dealers for that one. They were given previews of the PA and the Lucerne and they picked the Lucerne as their headliner car. maybe one day they'll bring it over (along with the Middle East Chevy Caprice).

I like the Lucerne but there's far too many parts that are shared with the cheaper Impala (steering wheel, gauges, dash unit, etc). You're spending a premium for the name and not really getting premium fittings. Or on the other hand it just makes the Impala that much more of a bargain.

yeah it has some gadgets, but at the core you sit in the lucerne and you're staring at the exact same interior as the impala (sans bowtie logo).

Buick is to Cool as KFC is to Gourmet chicken

Buicks are old man cars.

Did you hear about the Lacrosse (sold here as the Allure?)

Seems Lacrosse is slang for masturbation in Quebec.

You won't say that when a 300+HP Buick Super blows by your Civic. Plus if you were to drive from Toronto to Halifax, what car would you rather be in?

LOL what the hell, that 3 series is modified buddy. what the heck you are comparing apples to oranges. we here are voting on stock cars, with stock looking appearance.

Pictures does not do the new 3-series justice. You have to see the car in real life in-order to appreciate it.

It's not something that will be like OH WOW, I love it, it takes time to admire like art. But like every car, there will be a group of poeple who love it and hate it.

That 3-series has barely any mods, okay minus the breaks other than that it has new rims, and a kit.
Thats like what 4000$ most?

But the original car is still beautiful. Check out the 335i...

Most people around here would probably take... a Honda Fit!

(I wouldn't. But hey. I voted sub-zero for the Lucerne, so what do I know?)

You know there's a reason why no car maker other than GM puts high powered engines into transverse engine FWD cars?
I didn't realise GM made the Altima?

LOL :P (270hp isn't as much as 300, no, but I would still call it high powered, relatively speaking, for a front driver.)

Eh, well, 6 of one and half a dozen of the other I guess. I was thinking of the REALLY high powered ones, like the Impala/Monte Carlo SS with the LS4. 323 ft/lbs of torque would be a little unsettling. The VQ in the Altima is pretty high powered but it's closer to a 3800 than an LS4, not nearly as much torque (240ft lbs ish).

Nissan sucks anyway. They're like a Japanese version of Dodge - can't match the quality or reliability of the big 2 players (Toyota/Honda in this case) so they try to make up for it with slightly more HP in each class.

I don't drive a Civic. Too small for me.
And even if I did, I suppose I should be impressed by a 300hp Buick?
Not likely. Its a fast family car. Wow. What an achievement!

I drive a 2006 Jetta Tdi (flamers start your engines).
Its fits me better than any Buick, I am 6'6" 250lbs.
I won't even bother to discuss the glaring differences in fuel consumption.

My Jetta TDI can drive just as fast a 300hp Buick,
just the Buick can get to that speed faster than me.
Whoop-dee-doo.

I am not advocating my car go on the RFD Cool Wall.
Hardly. But putting the Lucerne up there? What a joke.

Having said that, my time is too valuable to drive to Halifax.

Thanks, I'll fly.

Edit: The Super version has only 17hp more than the CXS,.
Thats really Super !

Its closer to a 3800 because its a V6. And one of the best, according to Wards. It won top 10 engine from 1993 to 2004.

If I had to be in a 300HP family car, I'd want it to be a RWD, like every one else is making these days.(actually its 292HP - look it up. The Lacrosse /Allure is 300hp.)

The Super Allure/La Crosse is basically an Impala SS, the whole point of having a performance car is to get to the speed fast not drive fast - almost .any car can go fast given enough time.

I love the fact that it is a fast family car/sleeper sedan. That way the cops leave you alone, but you can have some fun if you want.

So, wait the fact that the car can dust a lot of other smaller cars around, and do so while having the kids in the back with the groceries, and some home/garden purchases from Canadian Tire in the trunk, isn't at least something of an acheivement? I mean if anything a small, high horsepower car that's quick, is not something surprising. A large grandpa car like this with some power is a little more surprising if you ask me. But of course I don't think grandpa should have that much power anyway, and probably shouldn't be driving either hahaha.

In my book that comment makes me think of you more as a commuter rather than a driver, LOL.

And go ahead and save your fuel, at least the Buick doesn't stink up the place! (Hey you said start your engines hah! ;) ).

The Cool Wall has more than one category, you realise. You're saying the Lucerne doesn't even deserve to get voted on then? Strange--that's kind of like denying anyone voting on it any other way than not voting, or something twisted like that, lol.

If you just meant not putting it in the Cool category of the Cool Wall, then yeah I agree on that note (see my post above).

Having said that, my time is too valuable to drive to Halifax.

The front grills on a lot of GM cars look blah. GM has come out with some half decent looking cars recently but it always seems the front end on them kills the look. Is it just me?
