Hi
I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help me out here with this situation.
I am 18 and I'm about to be added as a secondary driver to my family car insurance(Under dad). He has a clean record and they gave him a quote and everything great. They then proceeded to tell him that if I get into an accident that it will stay on my Dad's record after the 6term period and i will have a clean slate. Now my Dad is worried about this and doesn't think this is right. Is there anything we can do so I can be insured as well as him at the same time so accidents will only affect me and my record. Or if you know any decent insurance companies that do this.

If you're insured as a occaisional driver that is the way the system works as he is the actual policy holder. All accidents with the insured vehicle go against the policy holder. We just had this discussion with our insurance agent today.

Is there anyway you can go around this so it doesnt affect policyholder and it only affects me? because if i got into an accident it should be on my record with the insurance company and not my father. If anyone can help me.
Thanks in advance.
edit: Also when you add someone to your policy how long does it take for it to become in affect? For it me to be legal to drive the car?timelength?

Just another quick question. What is accident forgiveness exactly. If u gret into a accident is it still put onto your record?

Policy can be active immediately if you have a fax machine or something where they can send you the temporary slips but usually its 12:01 of the next day. Like the other poster said, if you are the occasional driver, then the accident won't be on your dad's policy it would only affect you. I'm no expert on the matter ..but hey I tried!

All it takes is a phone call to add someone to an existing policy and it's effective immediately.
Accident forgiveness has certain clauses. For our insurance company it can not and does not apply to anyone that has not been fully licensed for at least 6 years. So what this means, is even if your Dad has accident forgiveness built into his policy or as an additional rider on the policy, it would not apply to you in any way. If you have an accident the accident forgiveness can not be used and his rates would rise.
The only way around your record affecting your Dad is to get another family car and be insured as the principle driver of that car or get your own car and your own policy. Both options are going to cost you a whole lot more money though. The reason it will effect his rates if you have an accident is because the claim will be under his policy and he will then not be claims free anylonger....

So is this true if I'm an occassional driver on his policy it wont affect his record and it will only affect mine? correct?
Will it affect my premiums when i decide to move on and get my own car?

Um, no. If you get into an accident and you're an occasional driver, it affects your father, not you.
There is no way around this period. It's just how insurance works.

This has already been answered:

Well this is very confusing because i called the Insurance company again. this time they tell me my driving record will not affect my dads record but will affect the policy as in it will say there was an accident yet his record will be clean and the accident will be on my name for 6 years if i were to have one. Which one is it?I hate these insurance companies jeez

Very simple solution, don't do anything stupid like getting a ticket or get into an accident.
Any accidents you have will be on YOUR record AND your policy (which is your dad's policy), and insurance premiums will change accordingly, but will not be on your dad's DRIVING record. (ie if you get into at-fault accident, it will be on your record, your insurance premium for next yr will likely go up, and this affects your dad because he pays for insurance, but will not affect his personal record.)
I think you are mixing up insurance policy records vs driving records.

Both of you are in the policy (primary and occasional) which means not one but both of you will be affected if you get into an accident.
If you get into 2 accidents, most liekly the insurance company will cancel your policy leaving you and your dad screwed to go into the secondary market. Happened to me. They cancelled our family policy because I had 2 at fault accidents.
Accident forgiveness is sort misleading.
You get into 1 accident..fine..no increase in insurance.
Get into a second one...your rates increase counting you as being in 2 accidents. They count the first one and the second one. Very tricky insurance companies.

he probably needs a perfect driving record (ie, no charges, tickets, accidents, etc), not a perfect insurance record.
look into it.
