View Full Version : SDM - Bonus Redemption - July 21&22 - 40,000=$100 & 75,000=$200

Jul 7th, 2007, 05:59 PM
Bonus redemption event is back, July 21st and 22nd.
Saw the flyers come through at work yesterday.
Same as all the previous ones...
Redeem 40,000 points for $100 off, instead of the normal $75 off.
Redeem 75,000 points for $200 off, instead of the normal $150 off.
SHOULD be nationwide, but if not, I'm GTA.

Warden & Huntingwood
Fairview Mall
Thornhill Square (Bayview & Steeles area)
Don Mills & Lawrence
Yonge & Finch.
With Yonge & Finch, they're working on getting more in ... it's been difficult for all the SDM stores because Nintendo hasn't dropped them off, plain and simple. I doubt there will be some for the redemption but hey, depending on timing, you never know.
Last I heard, Thornhill may have some right now.

No, but maybe call Yonge & King and ask them, they're in that financial district (kinda) and rely on Monday - Friday business, so they may run it early. Same with the Eaton Centre.
Yonge & Finch will be running it on Friday.
Also, if everyone is getting the Harry Potter book, obviously this could count towards the redemption. I ask the manager at Yonge & Finch, he said he ordered over 200 copies (unlike other stores that I'm sure will get 10-50).
Keep that in mind if you become desperate for a book.

What's on display and what they have are completely different numbers. Maybe they just got something in, I don't know, but I was just talking to them a few days ago and said they hadn't seen anything in weeks.
Like I said, nobody knows but they sorta just show up.
And yes, it's only in Toronto / Thornhill region right now from everything I've seen and been told. It's not a "SDM Product" as of yet, that's for sure.

$289.99 plus taxes = $330 and change.
Includes everything it always includes.
System, Wii Controller, Wii Nunchuk, Wii Sports and all the necessary wires and cables.
If you want a second player to play with you, you'll have to at least pick up the "Wii Remote" or "Wii Play" which has a remote inside.

Unfortunately, you can not. You would have to split it up into two separate $200 redemptions. If you are trying to buy something over $200 you can not get full redemption. Lets say you try to buy a ps3 for $600...the max you can redeem is $200 towards that $600.

Actually you can.
First you purchase the item with 75000 points then returns it. SDM will not reinstate those points but instead will give you $200 in gift certificate. Then you purchase the same item again with another 75000 points plus the $200 in gift certificate you just received.
To avoid embarrassment I would purchase a camera of over $200 in value then return it 30 minutes later saying my wife didn't like it. Then purchase the item I had in mind using the gift cert. and another 75k points.
By the same token, you can purchase a $600 item by returning it 2 times. (i.e. want it... don't want it...want it...don't want it....want it.)

They will let you return it if you haven't open it. If you have opened it, I would buy another one on Saturday, don't touch it (hide it so your kids will not open it by accident), return it any time after Saturday with the bill that you bought last Thursday. Good luck.

All activity will be monitored. If they suspect you're doing something criminal or making a business off them, they can press charges.
They can take points away, put you in a negative balance, they can cancel the Optimum Card. They can do whatever they want within the business.
You're just looking for trouble if you're running a scam like that ... expect phone calls and investigations.

My personal opinion, circumventing and trying to get your Wii for free is just going to ruin it for everyone else. You're already getting $200 off of a product. If SDM flags your account, it's your own damn greedy fault!
If enough people start doing this, they -could- pull all high end electronics, like video games, cameras, etc. Some poor kid at Christmas (whose mother has been saving her points/money for a Wii) won't get one because of a few greedy people.

Dude, relax, its not criminal offence to purchase something and return it later on and get a credit for it. If it doesn't work its fine I can get extra controller. Its like doing price match and using extra rebate after the transaction. Scam, I don't see any scam by returning a product and purchasing something else for the credit. Phone calls, investigation, maybe police, are you real, they have more important things to do that verifying purchases and returns. On the top I am not the first and last one doing it.

In the criminal law of common law jurisdictions it may be called "theft by deception," "larceny by trick," "larceny by fraud and deception" or something similar.
You are planning to purchase then return something just to circumvent the rules on the point system. You are aware and acknowledge the limitation of points per purchase and have a deceptive plan to break the rules. This is fraudulent behavior.
Nice trick to break the rules for your personal gain while deceiving shoppers out of money.

That is completely different. For one, no where in the rules of the referral event did it state that you could not organize a chain of people. We have always looked at it REALLY closely to see if there is a change in the wording. We have ALWAYS played by the rules.
Purchasing something via points, returning it JUST so that you can obtain the item for 'free' is obviously circumventing the system.
No use getting in an argument here.. I just wanted to state my opinion (whatever it's worth), you've stated yours, people can do what they want. Thankfully I believe in what goes around comes around

1. It is mentioned in the Optimum Policy. Maybe not specifically, but the act of working to get Optimum Points in a scam like that is.
2. It IS a huge problem for Shoppers Drug Mart, which they're aware of and will likely be altering the program to fix it ... it's a loop hole and you can bet yourself that it won't last that way forever and ever. Trust me, they're aware of it and people like you, so watch yourself.
They have specific people in the company who sit all day looking at numbers and statistics and people who cook up a scam like that. If they care about "double dipping" on Optimum Points, they'll certainly care if you're willing to go THAT FAR to get a system.

First of all, I apologize for bringing this "trick" up again if this is against the SDM policy, and if it upset so many RFDers.
But I still don't see what the difference is between spending 150k points for $400 worth of merchandise (i.e. grocery & drugs), and spending 150k points for a $400 single purchase. No one is obtaining the system for free. They were paid for by points. It's a fair deal. They didn't say you can't redeem 75k points twice in a single day, did they?
the way I see it, there is no unfair gain to the purchaser, and no real unfair loss to SDM.

Bringing it up? Who cares, people do it all the time, whether you bring it up or not. It's in every SDM thread ever written, every time there's a sale we go through this ... there's at least one post.
Just so happens that this one is really long this time around.
There's a difference, because if there wasn't they would ALLOW it to be stackable or increase the limits, knowing very well that some members have more than 75,000 points (I have myself in the past and wish they allowed this). For interest sake, I'm told SDM makes very very little money on the Nintendo Wii and are really doing it as a customer satisfaction favour to the customer and nothing more. It's part of the pilot program between SDM and Nintendo, to push the Nintendo product. Buy a system, maybe you'll buy a controller or a game or two ...

I used to have about 270,000 points that I got this year :)
But I did buy a lot of stuff on every 20x day- and buy a lot of onsale groceries and use bonus coupons so I really "earned" all my points!
one way to earn more points is to go to the bank machines and get your optimum point balance and print the special offers 4 or 5 times in a row- you will get different 1,000 point deals and u can combine them all.
you can do this every day also with stuff u buy there :)

My experience from last round bonus redemption. Need to watch out for cashier's mistakes.
==================
I went on June 6 and planned to redeem 75,000 pts for $200 worth of goods. However I only got just over 100 in my cart. I thought well, 40000 pts for 100, not too bad. So I went and paid. I told the cashier that i wanted to redeem 40K pts for $100 and asked what my total was before tax. I was told 102.xx "Right on", thought to myself and happily handed over my optimum card. I had to admit I was thinking about the Senator's game too. Not until I got home then I realized that the cashier took 75,000 pts for 102.xx!!! Of course I went back to the store and complained. I was told that they'd void my purchase for me, so that the 75k could be put back to my account. But I needed to fill up my cart with identical items that I bought 10 min ago so that they can rescan every single one. What a pain (to both the cashier and the customer). But I was reassured that was the best way to resolve the issue, without raising suspisons at the Head office and freeze my account. So I gave in.
Lesson learned: always watch out how many points the cashier is taking off your account. Because, again, due to their system limitation, anything above and beyone $100, and you choose to redeem points, the computer would offer "redeem 75000 for whichever amount the total comes to, even it's well below $150 (or $200 on bonus redemption days). The correct way is, ignore that "offer", keeping pressing "enter" until you see the correct level, that's from 3500, 7000, 10000, xxx, until 40,000. Well, I know computers are not that smart, but surely SDM could do a better job to train their cashiers.

I always warn people of this. That's why you have to watch and remain clear in what you want. And for tidbit sake, it's a known issue and I would imagine that SDM would fix it ... one day.
It works and it doesn't, that's all there is to it.
For some people, it pops up the most they have available and you work from there ... for others, you're using a lesser amount but you have more points (so you're using 40 but you have 75K available) obviously it's not working out for you.
What needs to change is this "We can't give the points back" scenario and beating around the bush to try and correct mistakes. Trust me, that little scenario I see all the time at tons of stores, nothing unique about it.

There, do an advanced search looking for beauty boutiques AND Digital Printing ... that's guaranteed a huge store.
Look for film processing or digital labs on their own ... that's a photo lab store as well.
I'll try to get more details for Toronto and Vancouver through my own searching ... give it Thursday / Friday, alright? I'll do it for you guys.

My experience from last round bonus redemption. Need to watch out for cashier's mistakes.
==================
Maybe DaVibe can report this glitch to HO sometimes? It happened to me too one time. Gotta be careful when redeeming your points!
you guys are lucky to have local SDM stores selling those... too bad not all stores do that :|My thought exactly. All those people in the GTA getting consoles and stuff makes me wonder what taking SDM so long to put them into the Vancouver stores.

For example, buy a camera and get $200 Off (75K points)

My personal opinion, circumventing and trying to get your Wii for free is just going to ruin it for everyone else. You're already getting $200 off of a product. If SDM flags your account, it's your own damn greedy fault!
If enough people start doing this, they -could- pull all high end electronics, like video games, cameras, etc. Some poor kid at Christmas (whose mother has been saving her points/money for a Wii) won't get one because of a few greedy people.
my personal opinion - i think there are too many greedy ppl on RFD that are "all for themselves" trying to make a quick buck these days.... :|

What are you talking about? Quick bucks? I didn't steal any points from anybody and I don't redeem points for cash. I have earned them the way you did and most of the rdf members. I still leave my money (points) in the store, so what is the difference. I don't cash them. By the way, if SDM didn't have points system, most of the people wouldn't buy anything there except items that are on sale (you can purchase the same item in Walmart, Zellers or any other store for 30-50% off.
I won't be discussing this issue any more. Good luck everybody with points redemptions.
Live long and prosper.

I'm pretty sure that was a general statement, and not about this ONLY in particular. Talking about people buying 10 of an item so they can sell them on ebay, instead of letting other RFD members to pick them up. And that I totally agree with, but that's the world we live in.

I agree its wrong to do that, but come on we are talking about a corporation. If you were doing that to a small privately owned store then fine its wrong and you shouldnt do it, but its not like we are getting ourselves more points and SDM is benefiting by this optimum program. If they didnt have it then they wouldnt make as much esp from those that just shop there to get points. Your account will probably be "flagged" if you do it continually on big ticket items, but once in a while? It might still get flagged but nothing will happen. SDM isnt stupid they've done thier calculations and by the amount of profit they are making off optimum collectors with large point balances they would be ahppy to let you continue to shop and collect points

Hahaha okay ... whatever you think.
I'm warning you for a reason. SDM doesn't have these weekend's very often and when they do, they're obviously reviewing everything that happens, especially all returns on points.
Also be aware, SDM can mail you a cheque for a return so your plan is not so "fool-proof" to say the least.

The XBOX's came and went so don't ever think that Shoppers will have them again ... at this point there is no store that has them and no store getting them (I say this with 99.999% confidence).
The PS3 I've only seen as a "Featured Item" at the Don Mills & Lawrence location, the 1,000th Store. I've seen games at other locations (PS2, PSP, XBOX 360) but I have never seen the PS3 ELSEWHERE.
If you're really looking for one, they're the ones to go to for it.
iPod's are no longer sold and the Apple agreement was closed ... it's like asking if they sell Kodak film any longer ... they couldn't supply enough and since then, Shoppers' sells other MP3 Players.

In the immediate Toronto area, I'd definitely say no. XBOX 360 Bundles were for Christmas 2006 / January 2007. iPods were about 1-2 years ago.

Also, could I return it to another SDM store which doesn't sell the Wii?

The features on those cameras are pretty much the same... the SD800IS has optical image stabilization while the SD750 and SD1000 don't have it...
SD750 has a larger LCD screen than the SD1000 (3" vs. 2.5") but the SD750 doesn't come with a viewfinder...

Your logics is flawed. Your action is classified as a wrongdoing because of the behavior itself, and is independent of the target victim.
Your plan may be legal, but it is certainly unethical because you are abusing the system's inadequacy. How would you feel if you are SDM? If you don't like it, then SDM probably does not either.
Don't complain when your Optimum points are cleaned out by SDM because you are smarter than the system and can/do circumvent the "holes".
The redemption is a special promotion and SDM will definitely be monitoring the purchase behaviors/patterns closely to assess its effectiveness.
I agree its wrong to do that, but come on we are talking about a corporation. I just wanted to ask DaVibe since you seem to know a ton about SDM for whatever reason (or anyone else that might know)... How can I find out what stores in the London, Ontario area have either a "Canon PowerShot SD850 IS", "PowerShot SD750" (or even a "PowerShot SD1000" or "Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80" at least)??? Do I have to just call every SDM within a 100km and ask them if they sell cameras and if they have either of those cameras? Or (hopefully) could I just call one store and maybe they could look up on their computers which stores have cameras and them in stock? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Folks,
I don't want to jump on the band wagon here or start taking sides on the ethics of purchasing an item so as to return it for credit and therefore get to use twice as many points (indirectly) for a single purchase, but I can tell you some facts.
To support what DaVibe has been saying, SDM does and will flag your account.
I purchased 3 IPODS back during one of the 20X point offers and my account got flagged for exactly this reason (people would purchase high value and then do a return). My points balance was cleared to zero (and I had 100K plus points in the account!).
It took a month, but basically they had to confirm that I wasn't scamming. All that because some yahoo before me was scamming.
All that to say, live by the sword, die by the sword. You can justify any action you take if you talk long enough.. but rest assured that they do monitor this stuff and your gain today may result in a bigger loss tomorrow.. not just for you, but for all of us!

There have been a lot of questions about products and finding stores in the thread and I’ll try my best to answer everything in 1 or 2 posts, so take the time to thoroughly read through it all to find your answer.
Where can I find Nintendo Wii’s?
Nintendo has setup their products in some of their stores primarily in Ontario (one somewhere in Quebec but likely will be taken out) as a test of their products (games, DS Lites and controllers for the Wii). As a bonus, these locations have been receiving the Nintendo Wii. Shipments are not regular of these products and it is very hard to tell who will get what, when. The stores are such:
Thornhill – Thornhill Square – 298 John Street – 905-886-3711
Toronto – Warden & Huntingwood - #4 – 2365 Warden Avenue – 416-497-5444
Toronto –Fairview Mall – 1800 Sheppard Avenue East – 416-491-5567
Toronto – The Donway West – 946 Lawrence Avenue East – 416-444-4445
Toronto – Yonge & Finch – 5576 Yonge Street – 416-225-2321
Last I checked, Fairview Mall may have a few left, Don Mills & Lawrence should have systems, Thornhill Square should have a few and Yonge & Finch is sold out, however in-stock of all accessories (Wii Controllers and Nunchuks, Wii Games, DS Lites (any colour) and DS Lite Games – Wii Play also available.
All Nintendo Products Listed Below, SDM Yonge & Finch has in-stock.
Nintendo DS Lite - $149.99 (Peral White, Black or Pink)
Accessories:
Wii Remote With Wii Play (Extra Sports Games) - $59.99
Wii Nunchuck Controller - $24.99
Wii Remote Controller - $44.99
Games: Wii
Mario Party 8 (upon availability as this game is suppose to be out TODAY) - $59.99
Super Paper Mario - $59.99
Legend of Zelda-Twilight - $59.99
Games: Nintendo DS Lite
Pokeman Peral - $44.99
Pokeman Diamond - $44.99
Mario Kart - $49.99
Diddy Kong Racing - $49.99
New Super Mario Brothers - $39.99
Dalmation & Friends - $39.99
Brain Age - $24.99
Does Shoppers Sell XBOX’s or PS3’s or even iPods?
XBOX’s are now sold out across Ontario, the only XBOX’s you may find are one’s sitting in a store that have not sold from Christmas 2006 / January 2007 – not very likely.
PS3’s have been a featured item at Don Mills & Lawrence as the SDM 1,000th Store. As well as PSP’s. Games for these systems however can be found at large SDM’s, most likely the stores I will list that have double the amount of camera posts a regular Photo Lab will have.
iPods were sold at SDM in early 2006 and have since been dropped due to a lack of supply from Apple. Since then, Shoppers now sells other MP3 Players by different makes. You will likely not find an iPod anywhere now.
Where can I find the ___ IS?
Some Photo Labs offer double the amount of camera posts a regular Photo Lab would offer and therefore have premium cameras such as the Image Stabilization Canon models and DSLR-like cameras).

Second that.
Also I have an idea to avoid the cashier's mistakes when you want to redeem only 40000 pts but have more than 75000. If you have more one card in the family, just transfer points between two cards, so that one card only carries points balance between 40k and 75k, that way, you get to decide whether you want to redeem for purchase worth $100 or $200, and the machine won't take extra points off your card by mistake. Hope this makes sense.
Happy redeeming tomorrow and Sunday. The e-flyer is up.

Surprising why the system does not simply return the points on a return which would eliminate the temptation. It's really simple math, doesn't SDM employ progammers:lol:
Thanks for the clarification though one does question the "They can do whatever they want..." stmt. They must have legal obligations to honour these point and that these points appear on the financial stmt somewhere as a liability.
It's one thing to return an item after some retrospect and another to intentionally purchase soley to return to circumvent the policies. Anything can be justified by lowering your moral standard.
Cheers

There had 6 in stock at 8 AM when the store opened. 4 were gone in the first 5 minutes.
There were still two left when I left (8:30)
Don't forget if you spend $250 total in the month of July you get 30,000 bonus points
So the Wii purchase put me half way there. (almost liek I only redeemed 60,000 points for $200 off the Wii)

Just got back from SDM. Did shopping on essentials I needed! Anyways...
Toronto – The Donway West – 946 Lawrence Avenue East – 416-444-4445
This place still has 2 Wiis (on the shelfs anyways) when I was there before noon (There was 3, but someone picked one up when I was about to leave).
They also have 1 PS3 60GB on the shelf but at $699 (they didn't put the price drop...).
There are also a small selection of 360 games/PS2 games/DS console and Games/Wii games and accessories available.

I've been doing quite a lot of research on this for an ultra-compact camera... and if that's what you're looking for then I'd say either the Canon PowerShot SD1000 or possibly the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 (or W55 maybe).
But these ultra-compact cameras being so small, you sacrafice some picture quality, features and zoom (for the 'cheaper' ones). So if your main need isn't the smallest camera, then possibly something more like one of the Canon A series models is a safe bet (maybe A570 IS, etc)... it all depends on what features you want really.

Wii got the last Wii!! :) Wii called the two locations listed above (only after calling the locations around us trying to see if Wii can avoid the hassle of driving out all the way to the east end) to find out they dont carry them at all and that Wii were better of waiting till Christmas when they have them.
The Huntingwood Dr. had one last one left and basically had them hold it till Wii got there :) :) :) .. got off the phone and started jumping for JOY!! got there in about half hour and then 10 minutes later another couple came in asking for the same thing, the guy who helped us (poor him LOL) had to run back for ever single request and told them Wii got the last one.
AHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh relief, after missing out on the previous event -- we're super happy now and used two shopping spree's to pick up the unit and the other spree for extra controller, nunchuck and game :D
Wii are now happy :)

I was just wondering if any of you camera experts can help me out, I was just wondering Whats the best camera I can get from sdm for around $300?
My girlfriend and I have been looking around for a good camera in that price range for a while now. We settled on the SD1000 out of the cameras sold at the SDM stores here for $300 after a lot of review reading and deal hunting. Like somebody said above you sacrifice a little in the way of quality with it being a point and shoot camera but only the hardcores would notice I think, cause we went picture taking yesterday and the results were amazing. Another good one is the Canon A550, but that's only $230 so it's kinda in another price point. Unfortunately that camera has the old processor in it so it's limited in it's features, but from what I read it still takes great looking pictures. Image stablilization may be out of this price range however.
Got up with my gf at 8 and went to the new SDM in the northside of St. Albert because the store I work at only had the display model of the SD1000 left. DaVibe I found it funny how you know all the toronto area stores, and then two edmonton stores out of the blue

Well, the incident happened at the Broadway store (at Burrard) in Vancouver. I certainly didn't see a security guard - but I guess they may consider hiring one!
I have always seen one at the Kingsgate Mall store, but it is a really dodgy neighborhood so it didn't surprise me. No wonder SDM prices are always so inflated.

I don't know of any other location willing to look FOR YOU.

Hey hey hey, like I said before, I'm lucky to know different people at different levels of SDM, from the bottom and getting much more higher in the top.
I help them, they help me.

Yes, I have worked at Shoppers Drug Mart at times in my life, so I've seen the insides. And again, still have family and friends in the company right now. Some I call up and ask "So, what's new" and they tell me
New Optimum in September ;)
Edit: And what's it all about ME for? Can I help US out or not? Jeez!

Hi DaVibe,
Care to share more details? Change, for better or worse? Thanks.

New Optimum in September ;)
This sounds omnious.. with all the promos going on Optimum is squarely in the 'too good to last' category of rewards programs. I've certainly spent more than I ever have at Shoppers over the last year or so, but I doubt they've made much money off me with routinely getting 40-50% off.

The program itself is not expected to change, just a new card to better reflect the company.
Quebec stores already have it, it's just the company switching to a new card after how many years of having THIS one ... burgandy and plain.
Time for an upgrade.
The process will be VERY simple. Next time you're in (during the month I imagine) you use your Optimum.
Swipe the old card, swipe the new card and that's it, all the information will be transferred over. It's also a good time to update your information, but other than that it's a simple process.
Don't worry, this will be a heavily advertised event, that's for sure. It's cool, I like it.

They say on a regular day you're getting single percentages back on your purchases (where at some retailers, you get back nothing) while on 20X you're getting 20-40% of your purchase back to you in points.
Then they have redemptions and bonus days and all of that.
All around, I think it's king of loyalty reward programs and it's been working ... they're obviously past 1,000 stores now and only building bigger and newer ones. I've never heard anything about changing the program and don't worry, I've made it quite clear that I want to know if and when it does.

When all things are said and done, it's because of the Optimum program I shop there. Let's face it, the prices are slightly inflated on day to day items, but when you factor in the points program you are indeed saving substantially over the larger discount chain retailers.

Second that. I only carry four cards, SDM optimum cards and CIBC VISA for shopping at SDM and other VISA perks, President's banking card and PC's Mastercard for free banking and 2% rebate on grocery. The best deals to have.
Thanks DaVibe for the input. We all value your contribution.

Some items they can't compete with the HUGE box stores, like your child labouring Wal-Mart (I've noticed this on some household items and batteries, etc) however I'd say Shoppers DOES have a lot to offer.
Besides a great cosmetics department and at least an operating pharmacy (you can usually find pretty good staff) and their own Life Brand of Vitamins and households (which in most cases stand up ... anyone try the new papertowel? Wow, good stuff!) it's good all around.
They would never want you to know but there's a lot of deals they put up that they're making little to nothing on. McCaleanas (sp) this week went for 99cent, the mini microwave dinners ... regular $2+, that's crazy!
Pop is usually a good find, same with all the papers (Paper towl, facial, bathroom) and diapers are on sale quite often.
To be honest, I'm comparing digital products quite often and I can honestly tell you, they're in there (competively). The only reason they drop out is when FS or BB have a sale or something drops in price altogether, SDM doesn't have the resources to catch up and really will fall behind.
I was looking at some Sony cameras however and SDM had the better regular price, even while FS was pushing the same camera for more money in their flyer!
Same goes with Canon and Fuji models ... usually have to factor in Optimum Points and it definitely takes the company as having the "Better Offer".
Okay I'm talking too much ... I think you guys get the point.
I know people see a lot of "Bads" sometimes at SDM but I think the line-ups are smaller, locations are more convenient (better hours as well) and of course, the amazing reward program.
Besides, I thought we were ALL good shoppers around here!
