Can Rogers Track My Friends Phone?

Today my friend lost his phone and he called Rogers to report it stolen and he asked if they were able to track it down and they said if somebody took out the sim or switched sims they wouldn't be able to track them. Is this true? Can't they just track it from the serial number or if someone switched sims cant they just find out. My friend worked really hard for his phone and he only had it for 2 months.

the sim card is what holds your friends phone number, if someone switches and puts in another there is nothing they can do.

if they try to register that phone with rogers, ie get a new account with them, with that phone, rogers will red flag them.

Yep, the phone does have a unique IMEI number, so if your friend used that number to register the phone, and then someone else tries with the same number, they'll get flagged.

Otherwise, they can just drop in a new SIM and not contact rogers. You dont need to register the phone for any reason I can think of, besides maybe starting a new plan.

yeah, corrupt said it right, rogers using software to pull up accounts and an option in that software is to pull the imei #. So you could call in everyday and they could lookup the imei # and it would pull up every account that has ever used that imei #. But the trick is getting the agent to do that :-)

AFAIK, they don't blacklist IMEI's anyway... so what can they do about a stolen phone anyway? Even if they found the culprit, couldn't that person just say they found it?

Funny how Rogers can figure out whether or not you are using a Rogers phone (for their data plans), but "can't" track when someone is using someone else's phone. Go figure.

Most people who steal phones sell it on like craigslist so check there. Rogers won't do ****.

Actually, they can. But as you've inferred, they seldom do. In the last ~7 years, or basically since I can remember cellphones being widespread, I have come across ONE GSM phone that was locked up as a result of theft. I couldn't even believe it, but sure enough when you put in a sim, nothing happened, it wouldn't connect. My friend was using it as a clock/alarm, since it was useless as anything else.

I can't remember, it was 5-6 years ago. I don't think he stole it, I think he found it and was going to use it on his own but his SIMcard didn't work. We all tried, nobodys did.

The right thing to do is look in the contacts for "Mom" or "Home" or ICE, and call it to return the phone. Or call Rogers or the carrier.

I'm sure that's what you would want to happen if you lost your phone. But karma is what it is.

Oooor maybe karma was rewarding him by providing him with the phone of some stupid kid with rich parents who didn't deserve it and might not even care it was lost in the first place.

I've heard that Fido has an internal IMEI blacklist but you can easily just unlock it and use it on Rogers. I thiiiink there is no universal blacklist in North America. I've also heard you can just opt out of providing the IMEI on activation.

Anyone else know what current IMEI blacklisting is like in Canada?

Guys, use your brains. If Rogers or anyone freezes or tries to seize potentially stolen phones, anyone can declare their lost phone stolen and get people in trouble for buying a "used phone." You guys are hilarious. What company or law enforcement agency has the resources, manpower and time to chase potentially stolen phones lol
