please please help me with taking out this trojan

Hey guys,

I got a trojan called Zlob.trojan (i think) on my computer that changes my internet homepage to onlinestability.com and i keep getting annoying popus telling me to install all this unwanted crap. I was looking around and some people were sayin Zlob.trojan could not be detected through AVG and so i had no idea what to do. I had an annoying pop up that got installed on computer.. I tried almost everything and wasted 3 hours trying to kill the bugger.. anyways, it kept respawning under different file names and I could never kill it (kinda like cockroaches I guess). Long story short, I reinstalled windows xp, installed sp2, then spybot and spyware blaster and I've been infection free since then. Good luck, but you might have to reinstall or if you have system restore, back up the system to a date prior to your infection..

System restore is your best bet. It's simple, and takes care of most trojans and viruses. You'll lose any changes you've made to Windows, programs you've installed, stuff on your desktop etc back to the date of the backup you restore. You can do a backup before you restore to an earlier point, just to be safe.

2nd choice would be to test the various free AV and anti-spam packages to see if any can remove it automatically. But often they don't handle variations, or don't do a proper job.

3rd choice is to remove it manually, often a painstaking procedure.

1. Ctrl-Alt-Del to run the task manager and kill any tasks that shouldn't be there. If you aren't sure, try booting to safe mode. Not sure it a task is legit? Check on the internet - there are listing sites. Unfortunately it's more complicated to check RUNDLL items.
2. Run MSCONFIG and delete anything from the Startup list that shouldn't be there. If the trojan can't start, it can't do anything.
3. Run something like ToolBarCop to see if extra toolbars or Browser Helper Objects have been installed in Internet Explorer (and next time use Firefox!)

Take note of any file names you find that look suspicious.

Reboot

Run Regedit, do a registry backup first, then search the registry for any of the suspicious file names you found. Delete the registry entries if they look suspicious (e.g., if they are running a program you don't recognize, or installing something in Internet Explorer that shouldn't be there). If you encounter system problems, restore those registry entries from the backup.

Do a text search of your root directory and Windows directories looking for any file that contains those suspicious names. Back them up, then delete them.

Reboot

Look at the Services list under Control Panel - Maintenance to see if there are new services that shouldn't be Started (but there are a lot that are probably unfamiliar to you, so you may need to check listing sites on the internet).

Finally, if all else fails, download and run Rootkit Revealer to see if a rootkit has been installed that's hiding from the operating system.

Rock on.. make sure you install spybot or spyware blaster and a software firewall to protect yourself..
