hi my desk lamp is rated at 100w max, i have a 30w CFL in it and it makes a slight buzz, while a 13w CFL doesn't. what makes the buzz and is it a fire hazard? thanks in advance.

you must have a faulty bulb..

Not likely a fire hazard. I've heard many lamps/lights that buzz over the years and I've never actually seen any of them catch on fire.

If you're that worried, replace the bulb.

I have fixtures that buzz only after I installed CFLs on them. But not with reg. bulbs.

Your lamp is infesed with bees. Call an expert beekeeper immediately. On the plus side, you will be left with some yummy honey.

It's just the ballast inside the CFL causing the buzzing sound. It can be quite annoying, but not a fire hazard. However, it is also a sign that the ballast is not fully efficient and hence you're wasting some extra energy.

If your lamp is 2 pin = magnetic ballast,buzzes,not as efficient
4pin = electronic ballast,no buzz, very eff.
