i also just recently bought the raleigh ambush for $150.. it's a huge step down from the trek 4300 i was gonna buy. but hey, it's gonna get me in and out of campus and i wouldn't feel as bad if it gets vandalized or stolen.
i'm going out on a trail either tonight or tomorrow to see how bad it is :D

This is really dependent upon one's own definition of 'decent'. But to many bike enthusiasts, you cannot buy a decent bike under $450 for most intensive purposes.
To get you to school and back, sure, a crappy tire bike will do. If you intend to take it on any type of trail at all, you will likely be hitting yourself in the head with the problems you will likely find in the parts of the bike itself, or how shoddy the workers at crappy tire put the bike together. Next thing you know you spend another $250 on a crappy bike where you could have had one that will last you forever if you maintain it.
A bike at around the $450-500 like a Trek 4300 or Specialized Hardrock will get you some decent components, a bike shop that will fit you properly, and will likely honour free tune-ups for at least 2 years if not more.
Keep in mind if you can wait until next March there is a Toronto Bike show where all the local stores usually cut the prices on last years stock before bringing the new lines in - might be worth the effort if you plan on holding onto the bike for any length of period.

theres actually a bike show in toronto in october thats organized by the same people. its less of a show and more of a big sale. all the shops in toronto worth their salt go there to sell overstock and odds and ends for great prices. you can get your hardrock or 4300 there for $400 or possibly less if youre a good bargainer.
i suggest you put an extra $150 on top of your existing $200, make your way to downtown toronto in october, and get yourself a great deal on a norco, trek, specialized, etc. if youre not near toronto, then hit your local bike store sometime soon - this is when 2007 overstock will start selling at reduced prices.

What does detachable mean? Do you mean to be able to replace parts or take it apart altogether, I think any bike can do this.

prices at the october bike show in toronto are seriously rock bottom, and you would be very hard-pressed to find a lower price in any shop in the GTA. reason being that most of the shops are at the show to begin with.
good brands include specialized, giant, kona, trek, gary fisher, scott, and jamis.
you could probably get a cheap road bike for around $500 if you look hard at the show, but i wouldnt really get one for under $750. there are always exceptions, though. at the bare minimum, i would want a 105 drivetrain. personal preference wins out in the end, though.
boutique road bike brands like colnago and cervelo are quite pricey, but they ride well.
try for something like the specialized allez or the trek portland.

Oh please no.
Read the reviews on the CND tire website..
"First off, this is my first road bike. After purchasing I discovered that road bikes should not have grip shifts as you can not shift in the drops! I took it to the local bike shop and they said they have never seen a road bike with grip shifts and they were redundant. It would cost over $300 to install proper road shifters and it would be better to just buy a proper road bike starting at $600. The rear deraileur is made of cheap plastic. I also had to replace the bottom bracket after two months. If your thinking about getting serious about road cycling spend the extra money and get real road bike from your local bike shop. Cheap is not a good thing if you have to spend extra money on new parts for a new bike!"
"I just purchased this bike today and I regret it already. The assembly of the bike is very poor (despite the canadian tire employee claiming it to be the finest) . The brakes are touching the wheel and the gears make a crunching noise. Now I would have to lug
it back to the store and wait for days before the repair it.
Be careful when you buy this bike and check it thoroughly. This is my second bike from canadian tire (yng/dundas) within a month and both of them suffer from poor assembly. ( previous was a raleigh matterhorn and it had the same issues)"

i question the way people ride bikes
my sister's 8 year old crappy tire mountain bike still works fine today... granted she hasn't taken it on any mountain trails, but it's seen the elements to and from school and nearby shops
even my super old bike from ToysRUs would still be good shape if it weren't for some punk kids who decided to jump on the tires, warping them badly in the process
but then again. i could just go out and buy another new crappy bike for $150 instead of spending the same amount to fix a more expensive old one (i was quoted at $300 to fix my old GIANT Road Bike http://www.flickr.com/photos/shadowvlican/sets/72157600752177823/ )

Yeah i know thanks! How much do you think a specialized allez elite triple would run for at that place? (is that a good choice in your opinion?)
Thanks

Your road bike probably has better quality parts than a lot of department store bikes but it's just that they are old and difficult to find and replace. By the looks of it, you're better off with a new bike than to go through repairs (ie. replacing old parts with new old parts)

the MSRP on the 07 elite triple is $1100 USD, so i would wager that you could get it for a cool $1000 at the bike show if its there and in your size. possibly even less than a grand if things go well and youre lucky.
the allez is the working man's tarmac, and theyre well-made. of the road bikes that i would buy from specialized, id probably buy an allez since im not made of money. the black elite triple looks really fast.
that being said, id still get a tricross next over anything.
