Pay an extra $30 @ Best Buy and don't get stuck with a Celeron:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10089347&catid=20354&logon=&langid=EN
Add 512MB DDR2 for $23.99:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=013247&cid=RAM.187
I got this combo for my mother and it's a really nice machine.
And don't forget to get the HP F4180 all-in-one for an extra $29.99 @ Best Buy.

I passed on both these and went for the Dell deal. Getting a dual core for less than $100 more and twice the memory of the FS deal (not to mention bigger screen among other advantages) is worth it IMHO.

Sempron's probably worst.
You need TWO 512MB DDR2 for $23.99 if you want 1GB
EDIT: Most laptops are 2x256

Nope. It comes with 1 512mb, and you only need to buy 1 more 512mb. I did for my mother's setup.

Some of us don't wanna be stuck with Amd/ati thing. But would you notice a difference in productivity between an Intel cpu and an AMD cpu? Probably not; so whatever is the best balance between price and features would make my decision.
I've recommended Celeron-M laptops to friends and they're more than happy (I'm sure it would be the same case if it was Sempron-M). They're better than the old dinosaurs they had before, so it's all good.

I'm afraid that it's model-/brand-dependent. My Toshibas come with 1X512MB stick (before upgrade).

The celeron is considerably better now than when people posted that stuff in 2005
if you look at the specs of a celeron now you will notice increased cache and fsb over the past few years. now has 1mb of cache and 533MHz FSB which is similar to the pentium Dual cores.

I thought I saw a notice in the FS online flyer about them knocking an additional $20 or $30 off because of the mis-representation on the
product...
Correct..
Acer Intel Celeron M Processor 520 (AS3680-2576/AS3680-2979)
WebID:10089803/10089804
On page 3 of our August 3rd flyer we advertised this item with an incorrect image. It does not include a built-in webcam. In light of this error we are dropping the price by an additional $30 to $469.99.
So it was the asme price as last week.

The ATI 1150 is faster than the Intel GMA 950. I ran the Windows Experience Index on the AMD/ATI one vs. the Celeron/GMA950 one.
This is easy to do in-store.

Anyways, your best off spending another $100 and getting the Dell.
Some people want the convenience of being able to exchange their notebook at a store if there are any problems, instead of shipping it back to Dell and waiting for a replacement.
(i.e. dead/stuck pixels, etc.)
Some people don't need an uber fast CPU in a notebook as they already have that in their desktop PC. Slower CPU's and smaller displays can greatly increase the battery run time of a laptop.
It depends on what you want.
I got myself a Thinkpad T41, 1GB RAM, SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) TFT LCD, 160GB HD, CDRW/DVD off e-bay for the cost of one of these new ones because I wanted the small form factor, excellent battery life, higher resolution screen, and durability of the titanium casing.

No, its not a better deal. You have more memory, a bigger screen, a dual-core processor and you don't have to deal with Vista. Be happy with your purchase!

You're right... The only drawback I see is that Dell are having a shortage in supply regarding the LCD's thus the delay in shipping the laptops until the end of august... :(

I was going more for quality. Acer isn't the best with their warranty, and the quality is a hit and miss. Dell is a little more consistent, all of their products are "ok."

.
actually you are a bit incorrect here. the newer generation cpu's use less energy since they have much newer and better speedstep technology. the newer the centrino for example the better the energy efficiency.
though the smaller lcd will of course help.

I work at Best Buy and we all HATE these laptops. So many people come in and buy them because of the price, and then get pissed off because of how slow it is, and then return it.
I've seen these laptops struggle to run Vista + Powerpoint at the same time.
512MB simply doesn't cut it with Vista, 1GB barely cuts it.

With 1GB, the Sempron version of this laptop is very speedy. It runs Firefox, and all applications under Office 2003 Professional quite fast.
I'm sure all the sales people hate it when people buy it and get their RAM upgrade elsewhere :)

It's extremely slow! Almost useless! I bought this notebook when my Toshiba was in the service center for two months and I returned it after only a few days. Although if you plan to install Linux or XP, it's not a bad deal.
PS-Acer makes fantastic notebooks, but this isn't one of them

The Celeron M 520 is basically a Core 2 Solo with half of the L2 cache. Should beat a Sempron 3500+ easily, though it does not support Speedstep so battery life may be poorer.

Better yet, buy an Inspiron 1501 or Vostro 1000 from Dell (see other threads and dell.ca) for $499, get a better processor and more ram right out of the gate. You also get better support from Dell than you might from ACER. Don't get me wrong - I like ACER notebooks; I just find this model is severely lacking.

I am looking at price because I want a cheap notebook mainly for travelling. My plan is to spend another $40-50 to add another 1GB of ram.
That said, Staples.ca is very unreliabable on weekends so my order may not even get filled. If it doesn't, I will have a look at that Dell model.

some of you seem to be complaining about the speed of the laptop...but what do yo expect? you could have a core2duo 2ghz processor and it'd STILL be unbearably slow. if you purchase this laptop you MUST factor in the cost of more ram. accept it or don't buy it.

Sorry to be so blunt, but thats ignorant.
The Celeron M 520 is basically a Core 2 Solo with half of the L2 cache. Should beat a Sempron 3500+ easily, though it does not support Speedstep so battery life may be poorer.
This, however, is educated. Respect Amourek! btw, battery life tends to be around the same as semprons.
The Celeron M 520 is a 65 nm CPU based on Merom (Core 2) with half of the L2 cache and lacks both SpeedStep and VT, but has 64 bit instruction sets.
Bottom line, it will SMOKE the hell out of a sempron, not to mention a turion 64, and with ease. Semprons and turions are socket 754 parts and are often used in desktop motherboards. Anyways, please educate yourselves before jumping to conclusions and making silly comments based on the name given to a CPU. Celeron for desktops has never been the same as Celeron M for notebooks, and they have always been great performers.
