if i am not mistaking, you don't have to pay PST with directCanada, you save $8. In other words, a same price deal with a local pickup will save you hardly 2 dollars.

I bought this drive about 4 months ago, and I have already experienced clicking and slowdowns, so I am waiting for the seagate to go on sale so I can backup my data, and return this drive.
A lot of people prefer WD, but in my experience, I have had more WD drives go bad.

Thanks for the heads-up on this, noxidius! Does anyone recommend a particular enclosure to go with this Western Digital hard drive if I want to use it externally?

I have both go bad. For me it really comes down to WD's superior warranty service vs Seagate's 5 year warranty. I just buy whatever is cheaper.
I'm sitting on 3TB between my external, internals, and HTPC. But it's just so damn hard to resist! I guess I'll wait for the 1TB drives to hit $100 before I start buying again.

At least your drive is showing failure early in it's life... I hate it when the drive fails after the warranty

Then go for Seagates. 5 year warranty means they'll be more or less worthless by the time they leave warranty anyway.

I use a http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14940AC4961&vpn=NST-360SU-BL&manufacture=VANTEC and it work beautifully, but at $40 for that and $100 for the drive, you might as well just grab the 500GB external seagate they have on sale and get the whole rig warrantied for 5 years. for $10 more. http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14120DR2089&vpn=ST305004FDA1E1-RK&manufacture=SEAGATE

I've had success with the Vantec NexStar series of external enclosures... You can find em in all price ranges at a local Canada Computers
AVOID their USB/NAS storage unit though; it's not even a gigE port and it did not work well with my PVR at all

Yep, Return Merchandise Authorization.
What's the benefit of all these long warranties if you don't use them.

I own a few Nexstar 3 enclosures, and they run hot all the time and I don't think they are good for the hds in the long run.
But, I recently got a actively cooled Antec MX-1 and they are cool and very quiet. Case is always cool to the touch, they cost about $10 more. But I think would be better in the long run.

Actually it's less than that if you buy shipping insurance it's another $1.50. So you are really only saving $0.50, not to mention having to wait for it to be delivered and the hassle of sending it back for RMA.

Actually :) shipping insurance isn't required since you get $100 coverage and this is only $100. Shipping is express so the wait is not long compared to ground. RMA I can't comment on as different stores (locally) have different policies. Some may even not do a straight exchange. And remember, gas and time are money (to some people anyway).

I've got that Vantec, and loved it when i first got it. But it's killed 2 HDDs already. The eSATA connection was the selling point for me. Problem for me is that there's no fan whatsoever.,.. the aluminum is just not enough to vent drives these days, especially if you're going to stick in a 500gb one. Second, the blue light is cool in the pic, but in real life, it's annoying as hell. I was using this enclosure for my 360, and i like to game and watch movies in the dark, and the blue light was just annoying as hell..

Ordered one of these hard drives last monday and it according to their order tracking it still hasn't shipped. Pretty crappy since I need it to get my main rig running again and hopefully the dying hard drive in it will still work enough to recover my info by the time the replacement gets here.
Last order arrived within 3 days of ordering, this time 5 days and not even shipped...I'm going to call them on Tuesday and find out whats going on.

Good deal. I bought it when NCIX had it for $95, but i still haven't used it as yet. (waiting for some other parts)
the Seagate was on sale for $100 at the time as well so i was considering it but i heard with newer models they put on a special firmware to slow down the speed of the drives that can't handle it. and as soon as you update it then you will start having some clicking noise and could lead to failure.

I've heard its fan becomes bad very fast and in a few months people can no longer stand the sound it makes. too bad antec decided to go with active cooling, which is evil by definition

hmm if u get this for external drive... i say u get the mybook premium at costco... because this 99+tax+shipping which is roughly about 130..? then with the xternal case 40+tax+shipping= 50-60 dollars...? it comes to about 180-190 with tax in and shipping... then u gotta assemble it urself. mybook premium is 179.99 at costco.. with tax is about 200.. so for 10 dollars more u get alot more feature with it.. and u get the RMA with costco..

Or you could have just went with the blue Vantec enclosure from Directcanada...
Blue vantec with eSATA (http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14940AC4961&vpn=NST-360SU-BL&manufacture=VANTEC) $37.80
500GB WD SATA $98.88
Air Shipping Promo $ 9.99
GST $8.80
Total: $155.47
Although I missed the slightly lower price on the blue version of the Vantec and went with the black, took the $2 insurance (not sure if it was necessary..) and ended up paying $160 on the nose.
Why is everyone splitting hairs over a couple of bucks anyway?:cheesygri

If you don't have a motherboard with SATA, you can get a relatively inexpensive PCI interface card:
Sabrent PCI SATA Card (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1281807&CatId=1455)
Or if you have a vacant IDE port, you can get an Adapter
SATA drive to IDE adapter (http://www.cooldrives.com/satoidecofor.html). Not sure where they sell these anymore locally..
