i bent a pin on my old s478 cpu and eventually broke it off so i purchased from the BST forum a used cpu. i went to put in the new one tonite but after doing so, my computer no longer boots. it will power up, all fans running (cpu + videocard), green light on the front of the case is on, but nothing will show on the monitor (no signal).

i have already re-seated the videocard and cleared the cmos but i still get the same thing.

anybody have a clue as to wats going on?
i dont have a spare videocard to put in to see if the one i'm using now is dead/dying

You did take the broken pin from the old cpu out of the socket, right?

OK....is the used CPU compatible with the motherboard's chipset? Have you confirmed that this new one was working in the first place?

yup
my old cpu was a 2.6 and the one i replaced it with is a 3.0

the seller stated that the chip was pulled from a working system so it should b no problem

assuming that the chip is indeed working, is there anything that could be causing my computer not to post?

Maybe faulty ram? Try changing the slots you're using, use only one stick at a time, etc.

I think you have a dead cpu. Try it in another system which you know works and if the cpu doesn't work in that either then it's obviously junk and the seller lied.

+1. Looks like it.

Did you bother to look online to see if your motherboard was compatible with the cpu. I know there is alot of P4 boards out there that could take P4b 3 ghz cpus but not the P4c's & also such for 3 ghz P4c's not bein able to use the P4e's on the board.

I'd recheck that & if not the cpu could verywell be a dud then.

+1 on the checking compatibility. There's a few versions of the 3.0 gigs out there.
P4 3.0 with 533fsb
P4 3.0C with 800fsb
Not to mention the northwood and prescott cores. (512k cache vs 1meg cache).

i've got the Asus P4S800 mobo and i used to have a 2.6C on it, running 800fsb. i tried looking for the manual but the Asus site is down right now.

here's the info on my old cpu: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6WS
here's the info on my "new" cpu: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6WK

i really c no difference between the two since they are both "C" versions and run at 800fsb...i guess i gotta check if my mobo can support a 3.0 processor

Your board, P4S800, supports that CPU. Either the seller sold you a dead cpu or it was fried during shipping.

Depending on the situation with the bent pin perhaps you shorted the mobo?
When the pin was bent over did you have the cpu in the board and power it up?

how can i tell if i shorted the mobo? it still powers up fine but jus doesn't post

ya...my original cpu was in the mobo when i tried to power it up. when it didn't post, i thot i had installed it incorrectly so i took it out and then saw that the pin was bent.
