Canadian Tire has an Electrohome DVD555E High definition upconverting DVD player with HDMI input and SD/MMC/SM/MS input for $59.99 less $10 if you use the coupon that starts 31Aug2007. It's not a sale, but they have a ton of them so they might go on sale soon.
This has progressive scan, plays DIVX, MP3, MP4, ...
Don't know the quality but if someone wants to buy one and let me know, I'd go along with that!

The Electrohome brand name in Canada is owned by the same Chinese importer that markets units under the Citizen brand name. They're cheap junk with crappy manuals and poor support. But don't take that the wrong way - they can still be a good buy if the price is low enough. Do you need a lot of support for a DVD player? If it doesn't work, you take it back. If it fails later, you can just throw it away at this price.
But personally I would spend a few $ more for the Phillips - the build quality may not be any better, but the product testing, documentation, and support generally is.

My parents have a 20" or so Electrohome TV from 20 years ago, and it still works. It has the wood trim and volume/channel knobs on the front (up to channel 20 something or so only). Still working! They aren't using it as the primary TV anymore though as they got a bigger one.

I had one too. Things were much different 15-20 years ago. I think they were made by a Japanese company back then (don't remember if it was MIJ though).

Stuff made 20 years ago is not what is being made now.
Perhaps the set you refer to was made in Canada?
Another example...Meat...vegetables...rolled oats are nowwhere near what they were 20 years ago.
We have now moved to a throw away society. More plastic for the dumps.

I bought one for $49.99 and brought it home. It isn't the most attractive unit but it is OK. It is actually better build quality than I expected. The drawer is thin but quiet and fairly sturdy, given its thickness. Even though the remote is small, basic functions are easy to get to, but the buttons are kind of small for my fingers. It has a one year warranty (doubled if you buy it with a credit card that has this feature) so for $50, a 2 year guarantee of use is fine by me.
As mentioned earlier about Electrohome equipment, it has a poor manual - one fold out page to be exact. But, it is intuitive and easy to use so that didn't bother me. I hooked it up to my HDTV and the picture quality is very good. Playing picture from my Canon's SD card worked fine, except when it auto-rotates the image, it is too narrow when in widescreen mode.
Since it is DIVX certified, it played all my DIVX and XVID videos fine.
All in all, it works better than my old Philips dvp642. It is definitely a keeper! Might even get another for my daughter.

went to hunterhorn location and they had them....they kept them behind the parts counter. Paid $49.99 after coupon...not a bad price....will have to see how it plays.
But i also just bought the philips dvp5982 as well from bb for $71.04. not sure which one i'll keep.

Pretty good deal.
But I too, am waiting for the new Phillips to show up.
DVP5982/37 is going for $59US at Circuitcity. Its one of the few that does 1080p (in addition to 1080i and 720p) and is Divx "Ultra", whatever the ultra stands for - certified.

The one thing always missed when people consider a new dvd player, and my question for those who just bought it, is the layer change noticeable.
On a good player, you won't notice it, on a crappy one your audio could drop for as much as a second or two.

Good question. That's technically not allowed by the terms of the DVD technology licensing group, but it wouldn't be the first time that Chinese-made DVD players have violated those licensing terms.

I used the HDMI upconversion and then went back to the component output and there was a world of difference on my LCD HDTV. The component was quite fuzzy in comparison. I honestly didn't expect it to make as much difference as it did.

Unfortunately, no. The upconversion is through HDMI only. I tried it on my component input and it did not upconvert.

i brought one home and did a bunch of tests. it reads my memorex double layer dvd. plays 90% of my divx. and it supports srt, sub, idx subtitles. when it cannot play, it says "video codec is not supported" or "video resolution is not supported. i like the fact it gives me error messages. my lg lda-530 pretends nothing happened when it cannot play. i believe it is regional free since it plays my region 2 and region 3 movies. video quality is not much different from my xbox (both on 720p). but honestly i cannot see much difference among 480p, 720p or 1080i when playing dvds.
cons: doesn't support h264 divx. the buttons on the front panel are cheap. no optical output.
well, for $49.00 i have no complains.

You use the Select button in the lower right hand corner to get an index display of the card in the reader. Locate the directory you want and then the picture and hit Enter. Then your slideshow will start automatically from that point.
On a side note, I had some Verbatim and Memorex DL discs that wouldn't play on my panasonic, philips DVP-642 and others, but they actually play fine on this unit. Even the ones that said they were unsuccessful when being written worked!!

So I saw the deal, headed down to my local CT armed with the $10 off coupon and picked up one of these units.
I didn't check before I went but my Hitachi bigscreen TV has a DVI-HDTV connector, not one the HDMI connectors.
Can I still gain the visual improvement by using component cables instead of the HDMI cable?
Can I get an HDMI-->DVI-HDTV cable and will it give me the improvement gained with the HDMI upconverting?
Thanks,

1. The way the $10 off is being discussed in this thread makes it seem like the amount is deducted prior to the item(s) being taxed. For my purchase the $10 off was deducted after tax. Is this right or did my cashier mess up?
2. I tried to play some region 3 discs on it and it didn't work. Anybody have a hack they are willing to share to make this a region 0 player? :)
It gets deducted after taxes.
There doesn't seem to be a hack for it.

New guy here...
One thing to note about this electrohome, it does not play MP3s in any way shape or form, I originally though it was just usb that couldent play mp3's (I keep my new mp3's on a 2 gig microsd/usb adapter for my car) but I loaded up a cd full of mp3's and it dident even play them off a cd which I thought was a total letdown.
I was about to return it to get the samsung 1080p upconverting w/usb for $79 on sale at BB but dident because the electrohome at least played divx/avi files from the sd slot, and it was 30 bucks cheaper than the samsung (-1080p -mp3's -usb +memory card reader +cheaper).
Edit: the review posted earlier covered the mp3 thing and then some... :(
I have to say I agree with that review for the most part, but for the price its still a fairly good deal. For the average user (not quite me unfortunately) just expecting their DVD player to also play divx files w/upconverting & memory card reader feature it should be fine. As the real deal breaker would be its reading capabiilities of cd & dvd media, and video formats like divx, and it apparently reads them quite well.
