They're selling out fast online... down to ~60 units, and it was around 200 just 3 hours ago. I've literally been refreshing every few minutes and it keeps going down :P
Anyway, got mine. There's some comments that it gets really hot.. but we'll see. If it gets too hot for me to be comfortable, I'll just ditch the enclosure and keep the drive! Hopefully it's a Samsung drive, I have absolutely no complaints about the two Samsung SATA drives I've had for the last year or so. Nice and quiet too.

Yup. This was a great deal for $107, for the Samsung drive. The bare drive in all of North America was more expensive, and its a great drive to boot.
Yes it does get a little hot, but I find it is very responsive and quite fast for the USB 2.0 connect. I have used some externals before and I found them a lot more sluggish.
Overall I am quite pleased with it. I just hope it lsts now. The 1 year warranty is a bummer but for $107 again, hard to criticize anything really.

if it's off sale prices (or "lowest ticketed price"), then yes it would apply
but if it's off of reg. prices (like BB's online sale - other thread), then $120 will be the sale price, no extra discounts.

The Samsung drive is quite reliable.
As for the enclosure, couldn't tell you. I trust Samsung drives, but I'm not sure about LaCie and their quality. Some people in the last thread were saying the enclosures had some issues with heat dissipation, causing them to get very hot after a little amount of use, which isn't great for the drive inside.
Basically I'm just buying it for the drive anyway :P

According to the Lacie site, the aluminum alloy of the case is supposed to dissipate the heat, leaving the drive inside cool. So I would not worry too much if you feel it hot.

Well the old ones had Hitachi (AKA IBM) drives in them and by the looks of it high failure rates, in the middle they had seagate drives, now they have Samsung drives - guess they choose the drive with the lowest heat/noise/failure rate... they got it right in the end XD
Me too I bought it just for the drive to twin my other :)
Edit shame Lacie didn't just confess and have a replacement system put up :( - mind you if they had maybe they would not be so cheep right now :D

The Lacie is made of aluminum alloy which is supposed to dissipate the heat, which keeps the drive inside cool. Alloy means something else added to the metal; ie. it is not pure aluminum but still metal.
There is no further discount off the Lacie because the discount is off regular prices. The sale price of #119.99 stays at $119.99.

When you do get yours, tell us what you think of your case. Technically an alloy can be a mixture of a metal and a non-metal, which I am fairly sure is the case with mine. It does not feel or look like metal at all; it may contain a small amount of aluminum but I am not sure anyone would call it metal. Only the front and back plates appear to be metallic.

Samsung lists it as a 500Gb, buffer DRAM of 16Mb, SATA 3gbps.

I keep mine with the ventilation slots up (upside down) believing hot air goes up - so far with intensive use it gets mildly warm to the touch, it is quiet.

.
Almost all products made out of aluminum are actually made out of an alloy. Pure aluminum has horrible mechanical properties. In fact, I was taught that "Aluminum" was originally the name of an alloy of 97% Aluminium and 3% copper (I now have doubts about this).
WIkipedia talks about aluminium alloys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_alloy
The chemical properties are interesting too (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite).

You probably don't want them to line up anyways, because there would be even less space between them, and hence less airflow available to cool them.
I tried stacking them and they got way hotter than they do if they are not stacked - and that is pretty hot to begin with. I was actually thinking of gluing on some larger spacers just to help facilitate a tad more cooling.
What design purpose those slots serve, however, is completely beyond me, since the rubber spacers DO sit partway - but not completely - over the slots. They are probably just gratuitious styling accents.

Sleek is the last word I would use to describe the Mybook. I'm looking at one of mine now and it is big, thick and clunky looking with that godawful blue light and weird patterned cutouts on the side of it that expose the internals in a not-too-attractive way. I like the look of the simple design... A harddrive doesnt need to be flashy IMO... IT's not like you're going to enter a beauty pageant with it....
hence, the porsche name is just used as a marketing ploy.

I'll take the Samsung for less noise, less heat and faster transfer rates
Have you even used the Seagate? there is no noise..

The Samsungs are considered to be among the quietest drives out there. At least, that's what most of the HTPC and silent PC guys seem to think, and they spend far more time thinking about this issue than I do.
The Lacies I have are definitely quieter than the Mybook premium I got from Costco.
As for the aesthetics, this is clearly a matter of personal preference. Yes, the Lacie is a simple design, but therein lies its beauty. I think it is elegant. If someone had made enclosures that looked that nice, I would have built my own externals long ago, but every single one I could source in the GTA looks like ass to me.
I wish I could stack them but they just run too hot like that.

I agree, I prefer simple too. But I bought the drive because it was 500GB for $108, not because of it's "Porsche" design. Of course it would be nice if they finally shipped it to me... 18 days and counting...

i bought it 2 weeks after you guys from BB, and i just got this email this morning:
The following item(s) have shipped and are en route to you.
LaCie 500GB USB 2.0 FA Porsche Design External Hard Drive - Online Only
i did pay $119.99 though, so it was a few bucks more. looks like FS is just screwing you guys over.

anyone got it since the $107 sale? Its the 3rd email they sent me that says it will be delivered when they have stock.. 3rd week... By the time I get it, it won't be such a sweet deal anymore.
I'm in the same boat and sent FS an email asking when it whould be shipped - I just got one back saying it should ship Sep 10th or 11th. When I hit the buy button back on August 19th it showed as In Stock, but they do like to play games with their stock indicators. I might think twice next time I order something that I'm in a hurry to get.

Have you even used the Seagate? there is no noise..I disagree! My HP comp came with 250G sata seagate and it is damn noisy and constantly shows activity which as of today I still don't know what it could be doing  . For example, why should there be activity in the bios config screen

Personally I hate Seagates, and I would buy this Samsung over a Seagate even if was $20 more. Coupled with Seagate's ******** policy of not having Advanced RMA in Canada has totally soured me.
I either go with WD or Samsung. And the 3 yr warranty is fine since its usually seagate drives that I am RMAing.

Seriously, look at it.
http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/regular/10089693.gif
It's just a rectangular block.
I could have designed it.
In my sleep.
That's exactly why I like it. Aluminum brushed faceplate, no stupid bright flashing lights, flat and stackable, quiet, no garish logos. It looks like something that belongs on top of the desk, instead of something that I'd rather hide under the desk.

Compared to the Samsung there is
You can see 500GB SATA drive comparison tests all round the web all say the same :)
Edit for the record yup used Segates, WD's, Maxtors and IBM back in the day (though the WD's and the IBM were a few years back) - IBM's were the worst and Hitachi still is not much better :(

and your point is?
BTW, my point was that it is small and unassuming like a hard drive should be. Less is more. I don't need it to look like a book, or whatever the designers of the other drives out there had in their heads.
And of course the Porsche thing is used as a marketing ploy! What, did you expect it to look like a car? If you look at the Porsche Design website, it falls in very nicely with their line of products. Clean and simple, like an iPod.

weird i got a Seagate hard drive in mine, but it's an ATA version =/
oh well it's a great design, a heck of a lot better than any external case you can buy now.
Like the one i have now. I havn't gotten a clue what kind of person would think it was a brilliant design move to put exceptionally bright blue led's that could light up a factory and on top of that have it light up a logo of 3 cartoon penguins. Like honestly.
My only beef with this drive is the fan in mine is pretty loud compared to my computer and it comes on every few minutes.

To see if it is a Samsung, you have to go through Windows XP:
1. go to "My Computer"
2. Click View system information
3.Click Hardware Tab
3.click Device Manager
under device manager, look under disk drive. You should see manufacturer.

I received my Lacie drive last week but did not open it. According to Raxel,
Under the UPC Code on the box, if it shows "500 GB Lacie P3 USB 2.0 7200 RPM 8MB USA", It should be a Samsung drive.
If it shows "500 GB Lacie P3 USB 2.0 USA", it will be a Seagate drive.
So, to those that bought or received their Lacie drives, Can you confirm this?
Since I want a Samsung, I would exchange my unit, which says "500 GB Lacie P3 USB 2.0 USA"
Is your drive a Samsung or a Seagate? Does it match the UPC code on the box?
The one I bought 2 weeks ago on futureshop.ca in
F&F at $107 is a Samsung 16M.
The one I bought yesterday from Langford futureshop B&M is a Seagate 8M.
Interesting though, under UPC code on the box, the Samsung 16M shows "500GB LaCie P3 HD USB 2.0 7200RPM 8MB USA". The Seagate 8M only shows "500GB LaCie P3 USB 2.0 USA".

Well on page 3 of the thread you will see, two of us have Samsung drives and have "500 GB Lacie P3 USB 2.0 7200 RPM 8MB USA"
However on page 4 Sureshmysore comments they have a Samsung and it says "500GB LaCie P3 USB 2.0 USA"
So I guess it's still a lottery
At least you have two for "500 GB Lacie P3 USB 2.0 7200 RPM 8MB USA"
I think the UPC for ALL of them is just 093053689629 :(

Mine said the same today when i picked mine up and it is indeed the Seagate drive. I am very happy as i dislike ANYTHING Samsung, specially hard drives. The 2 other 500gb Sata3 drives that i have in my system are Seagate drives and run amazing, silent and super fast. I do recommend this drive. No to test the software it comes with.
