I see camera bag as a essential part of Photography. I need one that will carry a lot of gears and another one that will be good for the casual occasions.
They tend to be over price must of the time, as camera store make majority of there profit from accessories, and we are sucker for it....
I use a Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic as shown below:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/131/410572310_2d92130e43.jpg
Is a good little bag with the ability to carry a few lens and is quit comfortable. The downside is the lack of a tripod carrier.
Another bag is I use more often than the Mini Trekker is my Lowepro Nova 2 AW. It compact enough to carry a flash, body and two lens. Good for a quick walk in the park.

One of the problems with the smaller bags that I found is that they often dont fit the camera + grip with the lense on. So I end up getting a bigger than necessary bag. Personally I like shoulder bags becasue you can easily get your stuff from the bag while walking around. I also found http://www.tamrac.com/ has some pretty good bags at reasonable prices.

Camera bags are overpriced and most of them look downright ugly or worst of all "dorky".
so the best option is to get those small single body or lens bags, put your camera(s) and the lenses inside and then put them all in a nice and sturdy backpack. once you're in the location, you can attach the small bags on to your belt or get a harness.

Here is what I use:
- A Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic as the OP. Good to carry all my gear when I travel. Not very expensive and offering a good protection. You can attach a small tripod to the bottom of the bag with two fasteners.
http://www.lowepro.com/images/products/MiniTkrClassic_right_n.jpg
- A Crumpler 6 million home for everyday use. I love this bag! It doesn't scream "I have an expensvie camera" and it's a shoulder bag so I can grab my camera quickly if I need to. It's a bit pricey but worth every $. I can carry my XTi with a grip and the Tamron 17-50 attached to it, the 70-200 F4, a flash, a couple filters and there's still room for another lens (Tokina AF124 I hope :D )

Lowepro bags are worth it as they have lifetime warranty, if the bag ever breaks bring it back to their distributor in Markham and they'll replace it for you with the same model.
I have 2 of their bags, one for camera with long tele lens attached and another for everyday carry lens.

I'm still trying to find the "right" bag.
I've currently got a LowePro Stealth reporter AW300 - holds enough stuff for photo outings, but isn't quite right somehow. I've also got a tamrac shoulder bag which isn't bad - it's small enough to be light and subtle, but I can't fit all that much in there - it's too narrow to handle a body with a grip attached.
Also have a LowePro toploader for hiking or more active trips - it's the largest one they make, but won't fit my 18-200 with the hood reversed - I have to leave it at home.
I'm not really a backpack person when it comes to photo gear.. any other ideas?

I've got a crumpler 7mil home
it's swallowed:
- 2 flashes: 580II and a 420
- xti with a 17-85 attached
- 100 macro
- 70-200 2.8is
i like this bag, doesnt look like a camera bag and it's messenger style so you have easy access to your stuff

I have the 7 Million Dollar Home, and I love it too... got my D70s + 18-70, 50mm, 70-300, SB800, plus photobank and other accessories all stuffed into it comfortably. One thing that I wish it had is a thicker shoulder pad though, as it can feel a bit thin when carrying a heavy load.
The great thing is that it's soooooooo much easier to pass off as "just-another-bag".

This may be a stupid question, but what makes a camera bag a camera bag? I just used a normal backpack to hold my digital camrea without any problems in Beijing. Granted there wasn't much cushioning so if I drop the bag then there's a chance my camera will be damaged.

I think you answered your own question! Most good camera bags have padding and dividers to help protect your equipment in transport.

Plus, some are designed to let you access your photo gear much easier than other bags... like a lot of the messenger style bags for instance, most are designed so that you can just reach back and swap lenses or grab the body without much of a fuss.

I've used a back pack before with some custom padding. Mostly because I need to have other things in the bag, other than the cameras. I recently took a look at
Tamrac Adventure 9 and I think I'll go with it.

I have the following bags:
Slingshot 200 AW - for daily usage and general walk around. I have carried 2 bodies with grip, 15-54mm, 50-200mm, 11-22mm and a flash in this bag.
Slingshot 300 AW - I just got recently. Bought a 3rd body with grip which is larger than the previous 2 so needed a larger bag.
Mini Trekker AW - can carry all my gear including tripod in this tiny bag. Not bad at all.

I am busy getting used to my new 7 Million dollar home. It has a 40d with a 24-105L on it with the hood reversed.Beside that is a 24-70L and a 17-40L and on the other side is a Sigma 10-20 and a Canon 50 1.8. Other crap consists of the rest of the lens hoods, a Lowepro (6) filter holder. 2 Cokin P mount filter holders and 3 filters. Canon TC-80N3 remote and an Arctic-Butterfly SL700 (in the case). Spare battery, charger and cleaning cloths and fluids.
If I need to carry a little more, I will pack my Lowepro Nova 5 AW instead. If I really need to bring more I will use my Lowepro Nova 4 AW with the Nova 5 AW or Crumpler 7 MDH.

I like my Tamrac Pro8 for carrying the majority of my gear around when travelling etc.
I use my Pelican 1400 for 'adventures'.
I tend not to carry my lenses around with me though when I am out shooting. I usually just select one lens to use and leave the others in the car or at home. My Think Tank Speed Changer can come in handy when I do choose to carry an extra lens, flash etc...

I'm backpacking Europe soon, and I was wondering what's the best/cheapest case I can get (for my SLR), so I don't have to carry my camera around my neck all the time. I'll have a backpack already, so I'm not looking to get a backpack, more of something along the lines of a single-strap small compact case that'll be big enough for an SLR and allow quick and easy access to it whenever there's a photo op. I keep my lenses and other gear in my backpack.

yea, i agree...but what if you're looking to travel alot? then it gets more risky...even more people know about Crumplers nowadays.

I bought the Crumpler 5MDH and love it. I use it as a gadget bag as well when I am not carrying my camera. The size is good to fit enough gear but not too much that it gets heavy; makes me plan ahead and think what I really need before getting out of the house.
Yeah the name Crumpler is getting more well-known than before so the "does not look like camera bag" effect may be wearing off these days; but I think unless you've seen one before otherwise you wouldn't have spotted its a camera bag @ first glance.
I think my 5MDH will become the perfect bag once I use it enough to rough it up; so it doesn't have the rigid shape and brand new look.

The main compartment can fit my pentax k200d with 18-250mm lens attached, plus a sigma 24-60 and a small 50mm prime with room to spare.

i also have a crumpler 5m, mine fits a body (pentax k20d) with lens attached, 2 other lens on either side of the main compartment, i also stuck a flash in with one of the lens. on the side pocket i have extra batteries and some lens cleaning kit. I love this bag, i never take it off when i bring my camera to parties, im always good to go, whereas my friends have to sit down and open their backpack to change lens or attach a flash.

Can't comment about the size of the Lowepro nova 4 as I never hold one in my hands.
But judging from the pictures the 5MDH is less "boxed" shape than the nova 4. the 5MDH looks "box shaped" compare to a normal bag but is more rounded edges compare to the nova 4.

The Nova 4 is larger than the 5 MDH. If you wish to have the same space, you need a 6 MDH. Same goes for a Nova 5, you'd need a 7MDH to match it for its size. I have purchased all of the above and currently own them.

I use the Nova when I am going to take photos at a site (I do product shots for friends stores), and I use the MDH when walking about. A lot of friends ask what is in the MDH, but the Nova is so obvious, nobody ever asks, they know what is in there. Before, I used the Nova 4 on vacation, and the Nova 5 when at home. Now I use the 7 MDH (bought for $129 on sale) all the time and use the 4 or 5 as a supplemental.
In the 7 MDH, I carry, a 40D with 24-70L on the body, a 24-105L beside a 17-40L. On the other side I carry a 10-20 Sigma and a 50 1.8 with a sensor loupe. In front of the camera (still inside) I put the lens hood for the 24-105 and the holder adapters for my Cokin filters. The spot where the lens (on the camera) will go has the hoods for the 17-40 and the 24-70. The front pocket holds 3 Cokin filters and my Arctic butterfly brush and a 77mm cpol.
There is a small pocket to the left and right of where the strap attaches to the back. One has my TC-80N3, the other hold the chord for the battery charger. The mesh pocket insde the flap hold all my cleaning supplies and another cpol or two. On vacation, I eliminated my boloved 24-70 to place a G9 in it's place.
So, I feel better about the soft interior of the MDH, I know it is more inconspicuous because nobody seems to know what is in it. It is easier to blend in, mine is brown which is actually a khaki,k and as it gets more dirty it really starts to look like a messenger bag, which there are lots of. Only the camera educated know what it is. Everybody seems to know what the Nova or similar bags are. Thums up to the Nova for its All Weather protection.
I am waiting for the 5D replacement and then I will get rid of the 10-20 Sigma because the 17-40 will take its place, freeing up space to travel with my 24-70 as well.

Most likely made in China or Taiwan for $0.50 and sold for maybe $50. But because it has Sony on it, they mark it up to $129.99.
As for your bag, walk into Henry's if you have one in your area. They have a large and great selection of bags. That way you know what you're getting.

Get a comparable Lowepro bag. Much cheaper and likely bigger too. You do not need a Sony-branded bag, especially for that price.

try slinging a 70-200mm in your bag! LoL
Haha yeah.. slingshot 300 is too big as you tend to over-pack it. I tried it for a few hours walking in the trails and it kills my shoulder.
slingshot 200, however, is pretty good size.

I just picked up a Boda Dry lens bag. I prefer holding my camera, and this bag can carry up to five lenses and lets me change lenses quickly. In my Boda I carry my 70-200/2.8, 10-20, 85/1.4 and a 50/1.4 (my trusty 24-70/2.8 on my camera), and I still have room for a lightmeter or my Epson P-4500.

I packed my 200 with 3 lenses, body, accessories and my point and shoot on my last vacation a few weeks ago and didn't cause any discomfort. It was on and off for an hour at a time. But then again I do have broader shoulders/larger frame so maybe it helped? I did take a look in the mirror with it on my back and it looked really small. Kind of look weird. Maybe the 300 fits me more image wise but no way I need to carry that much gear just to go shooting.

I use a dakine sequence.. looks like a regular backpack. The thing I like is that you have to access from the backing so you don't have to worry about someone opening your bag.. you can also remove the camera block..
Does anybody know where to get this sequence+camera block combo in the Greater Vancouver area? I'm about to poll the regular sellers like Boardroom, Comor, but I was hoping for some tips beforehand. Failing that, any recommended online retailers for such an item?

You should try your local ski and snowboard shop for that camera bag... if you still can't find it, try ebay, that is where i got my bag from. Burton also makes a pretty nice bag.

thecamerastore.ca have one of the cheapest prices I've seen around. You usually don't see crumplers being sold for much less than MSRP listed on their site. I own a 5MDH and a Keystone backpack, they are absolutely wonderful. The built quality is amazing. The only downside to the crumplers is that they are bigger/heavier than bags that fits the same amount of equipment, however, that is due to the material they use - They are unbreakable almost!

Picked up the large Fidelity bag at Downtown Camera today for $48. Have to say it's a really really nice bag for the price and a dead on copy to the 7MDH that they had on display as well. About the same size as a standard messenger bag so it doesn't stand out at all, even more so since it doesn't have a single label on the outside of the bag

For those who picked out the Fidelity bag, Blacks has it on sale quite often for $20... so you may want to wait until they have one of their sales. But, I have to agree that the bag is awesome, esp for the $20 price. I also have the medium one, which I got for $15, that I use if I don't plan on carrying that much.

yeah, it might take some phoning around, but Blacks has both bags. The one advertised on their website right now, for $20 sale, is the larger one I believe. The large one can fit a a200 w/ beercan and a 2 other smaller zooms easily, or 2 lenses and a flash, etc.

I'm "one of those guys" with the kit Canon/Lowepro bag ($15 from a seller on POTN). Sort of fits: gripped 30D, 24-105, 70-200 f4, 50 1.8 & an sb28. Shame there isn't enough space to have the camera mounted lens down so it's easier to whip out.
...but then I have to leave some gear at home unless I'm carrying a second bag with the backup body / crap.
The Tamrac Pro 12 looks like a good upgrade, but I like the messenger-style Crumplers (brazilian home?) even though I know I won't be able to cram in as much crap.

With all of this gear, it is too heavy to be used (as a belt bag) without the shoulder support. Regardless, it is quite comfortable and worth the well money.

It's my second most used bag after my 64AW.
The 75AW comfortably holds a 40D with grip and 70-200 2.8IS.
I can also shove a 580II flash into the front compartment.
Otherwise, I can put a 40D with grip and short prime (30 1.4) and then have a 85 1.8 underneath it.
The shoulder strap is sturdy enough, but what I really like about it is taht it will fit on the S&F deluxe belt if it gets too heavy...
I also have the harness if I go skiing or hiking (only used once, but it was fun to be able to reach on to chest to grab the camera...

Very nice stealth bag lz7j. I recently got a compact Lowepro Rezo TLZ20 which just fits my 40D with 17-85mm lens. This is my bag for when I want to travel light since I have a larger bag when I want to take the "entire package". I agree that it shouts out that you're carrying a camera and I feel nervous since you're carrying like a purse on a small strap. (purse snatchers could just run by and grab it even if it's around your neck) It would be nice to get the smallest bag for my 40D but not have it look like a camera bag. The crumpler 4 million dollar home looks pretty good but it's pretty pricy at $60 and hard to find a local store that has it.

Hey guys. I'm looking for a bag recommendation.
I'm going on a trip down south soon and will be taking my trusty old 10D out of retirement. I use to own a Crumpler 6MDH until it got stolen. Now the only bag I have is a Crumpler Customary Barge but I don't want to bring a backpack w/ me on the trip (it's for sale btw :D ). So I'm looking for a recommendation on a camera bag.
I am looking for a shoulder bag that will fit a Canon10D w/ battery grip, fat 17-40mm lens attached. 28-135IS and 50 F1.8, Sigma flash, and a few random accessories in the bag (possibly camcorder). I am not looking at backpacks or sling bags because I constantly take the camera in/out of the bag on the go and I can't stop to take it out of a pack on my back. Since I will be in the Caribbean, I'd prefer something more discreet as well.
I use to own a Crumpler 6MDH and a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200/300?. I am looking for something around that size.
Any help would be great!

This is my street/travel bag...
http://www.nikkophotography.com/temp/indy_bag1.jpg
http://www.nikkophotography.com/temp/indy_bag2.jpg
It holds my favourite lenses - 35L, 85L, 135L and a 5D body
Beautiful... does the insert hold the body as well?! From your picture, it looks as though the body and the lens would crash into each other- do you protect the body somehow? I'm pretty careless about my equipment, but I feel like I shouldn't be now. I have a very similar set of lenses, but I would like to use my own messenger bags since I have so many of them. Freitag makes great ones- made of tarp from Swiss trucks or something.
I picked up one of these at B&H: http://www.rakuten.co.jp/mitsuba/445268/414041/449262/1848465/ and I really like it, it's small and holds like 3 L lenses, a pro body, a charger, and more, and it's tiny.
Back before DSLR's were popular (3-4 years ago), and no one had heard of Crumpler, I bought one off eBay for super cheap. photococan is the seller I believe, and I think they still have a store. I frickin hate Crumplers though- I had the 7MDH and it was so, so bulky. You don't want to take all that crap with you everywhere. Your camera is supposed to be an accessory to your life, not take center stage and overwhelm... that's my personal philosophy.

get two bags: one for everything and one for a few item (body+lens).

EDIT: My local Vistek was sold out of these inserts so they're going to special order one for me. I also went to Black's and they had the Fidelity medium bags in green and red for 16.99 so I got the green one.

I guess it's a moot point now, but the Tenba Messenger medium was on sale for $59.99 on the 27th. I got a nice blue one myself!
I'm hoping to use this for my primary body and lens (plus some misc. accessories). All other articles (if required) will go to my regular backpack.
I have a Slingshot 300AW, and I thought it would be the only bag I'll ever use when i first bought it. It is an awesome bag to hold all your gear, and that side camera access is something I'm taking for granted. The major drawback (for me anyway) is it can't hold anything else. Heck, I have a hard time trying to squeeze in my sunglasses. This drawback is especially pronounced during long day hiking trips. Also, accessing articles that are not in the quick access area is a bit more challenging than I would like.

worse comes to worse, go to the fidelity website and leave them an email/note saying that you cant find their bag anywhere in Ottawa, all out of stock etc...
i did that and got a call the next morning (i left the email/note at like 1am) and the CSR told me that the bags will be at his friend's camera store the next morning. i called the store the next morning and they were there waiting for me to pick up...this was downtown toronto btw, so it might take longer for them to get a bag to a store in Ottawa, but still awesome customer service if u ask me.

So I ordered the Fidelity Versa (large) bag from a local store.... Fidelity told me it would ship in 1 day. The store said they'd call me when it arrived, it's been a week and they haven't called. I ran to Black's and bought a medium bag just in case.
My photo outfit is about to burst out of the bag... but it fits.
I haven't had a chance to fully use it but things I have noticed compared to what I remember of my Crumpler 6MDH (stolen from me). While the bags LOOK very similar, they are not of the same quality. My crumpler had a shoulder pad, better strap adjustments, etc. Not huge but small differences. The biggest difference I've noticed is that the Crumpler had better padding. The padding in the Crumpler is thicker and stiffer. The Fidelity padding is soft and cannot even hold the shape of the bag. I had a hard time putting the dividers in the bag in the right spot cause the sidewalls were floppy and kept shifting.
I will probably end up taking the medium bag w/ me on my trip and have a nice test session w/ it.
So far my review would be:
Nice covert style bag for a great price. Better bang per buck than a Crumpler, but not Crumpler quality overall. Recommended.

I just bought the fastpack 250 and love it. The only thing I wish it had was a way to open from the other side of the bag as I would prefer to swing my backpack to the right to open the bag. The laptop sleeve fits my 15" dell fine, though there's a few times i thought about getting 350 for a bit of extra space.
Kata has a few bags as well, but the ones I saw didn't have space for anything other than the camera, and I needed one for short hikes and as a carry on when i travel so i opted for the Fastpack which has a bit of extra space for other things.

It is $53, $60 after tax. And the db455 can hold a laptop but it is a lot bigger than I thought so I got the 453 instead. Kata has DC series for day-to-day use as well, but looks like lunch box to me. And I might get a DR series backpack as well later.

Found the $14.99 Versa at Blacks in Downtown Vancouver today. It was red, and while tagged as medium, it was clearly a small. Not sure what's going on there.
The quality is OK. I'm not a big fan of the velcro enclosure (Crumplers have them too). Also the interior and dividers are made with a lower quality felt than Lowepros and Crumplers. The outer shell is pretty thin, but that's what gives it the low profile look; there's adequate protection for your gear, IMO. $15 is a pretty good price for it, but I think I'll look for the Kata bags. They look better designed and a bit higher quality.

Somewhat overdue, but I was looking around for a cheap camera case for a trip I'm going on soon, and I was interested in that medium versabag that everyone keeps talking about. After a bit on the phone I found that the blacks at Yonge and St. Clair still has some stock, and the price has dropped down to 12.99. Seems even better then the price at SIG's is (was?). Great bag, and I think they've got a few left in case anyone still wants one.

I am currently looking for a shoulder bag now. after some research on the cambags.com, I really like the Billingham and DOMKE bag. In the earilier reply, someone told me I can see the Billingham bag in person at the Merkel Camera store in Toronto.
Just wondering if anyone knows which store sells the DOMKE bag in Toronto? I find through many retailer, but couldnot find one... I really would like to see it in person before I purchase a expensive bag like this.
I discovered that the Henry's at Kennedy/401 carries a limited selection of Domke bags; I use a Domke F-5XZ small shoulder bag I got there as my main lightweight bag (camera, extra lense, and water bottle) but I think they have two "standard" photog shoulder bags on display too.

I also just ordered a Billingham 555 as a laptop/overnight/camera bag after going through a fruitless search for a nice, classically-styled shoulder bag that's durable and can be used for things other than just cameras. I ordered it from Robert White mail order in the UK -- even after shipping it's 35% cheaper than Merkle.

they had 3 colours to choose from. red, black and brown.
it fits all my gear and a few extras and i couldn't be happier. for $20, really can't go wrong. you get all the pockets, velcro dividers and compartments that the crumpler has.

went to sigs yesterday to check out the large versa bag (crumpler knock-off) and i picked up a brown one for $20.00.
from what i can see, the bag is well made, stitches are tight and strap is sturdy.
they had 3 colours to choose from. red, black and brown.
it fits all my gear and a few extras and i couldn't be happier. for $20, really can't go wrong. you get all the pockets, velcro dividers and compartments that the crumpler has.
is it possible to post a picture of the bag brown inside and out?
would it be worthwhile to get a bigger bag as opposed to the smaller one, even though I don't have a lot of gear?

There are 2 camera stores in Guelph, Ontario called Pond's Foto Source
Both their locations had a large supply of the small, medium, and large versa bags.
picked 1 up for my Canon 50D works awesome!
Looks like a messenger bag and protects the camera

I picked up a Kata 3N1-30 on ebay for $100 USD, I'm very happy with it so far. You can even put 2 bodies in it if you want to. You can use it as backpack or as a sling bag.

I can't decide between this one and the Fastpack 350. I like the looks of the Kata better but the Fastpack can carry a laptop too. Both are around the same price on eBay too.

I know that Kata as made that serie of bags with a pocket to be able to put a laptop in it, but they might not be yet available. Those are the Kata 3N1-11, 3N1-22 and 3N1-33. Go see the website if you want to take a look : www.kata-bags.com

The replica is called "Versa bag." I own the medium sized (equivalent to a 5 million) and imo, it's 80% in quality to my now sold 6 million bag.

Sam, I have the pelican 1514 /w the dividers and lid organizer. It's perfect for air travel. The 1514 will accommodate all the contents from your F1x bag, but the lenses must be detached from the body. The dividers are much better than the foam, imo...
I bought mine straight from the Canadian distributor and paid $198 in total for everything.

Go with the dividers, the foam is a pain to deal with. Mine only came with foam, so foam it is. I've added a few other things to my case since getting it, so its filling up. I'll also toss a laptop into mine while traveling by air, so the extra space the 1600 provides makes sense to me. The only problem is weight. No wheels is a huge pain.

Thx Nikko, looks like I'm following you with regards to bags, lol. I don't see a store or prices on Pelican's website:

I did get a CAD $207 cash quote from "Cases Unlimited" in Scarborough, which is the best price I've found thus far.

Thx for the advise & info! BTW, I'm surprised that they allow a 1600 to be carried-on:

The place where I got it from was in Scarborough... it might be "Cases Unlimited"... it's been a couple of years now. But yes, I love pelican cases
(1514 and 1560) - now a days, they rarely leave the house (I switched to Thinktank rollers). I only use it for storage now...
Cons on the the peli cases = heavy, wheels suck (they don't roll well on uneven ground: wheels are too small).

Sam, I use the TT TakeOff: http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/airport-takeoff-roller-camera-bag.aspx
It fits a LOT of gear for its size. I chose this model over the Security & International due to the deployable backpack straps. They come in handy when shooting in golf courses, farms and mountains. :cheesygri

Hey everyone, I am thinking about getting a new camera bag and am looking for some suggestions...
Currently, I've got a 5DII+Grip, Flash, 24LII, 135L and 50/1.4. These are the biggest items I'll be storing, aside from all the CF's, possibly a filter sleeve, blowers, etc. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have my camera in my bag with a lens attached, as well.
I've been looking at some of the Domke bags, but I'm not too sure about the sizes of their bags and what others would recommend. I'm currently using one of the Versa bags (7MDH Clone), but don't like how it feels against my hip and I've heard the Domke bags are soft and won't give me this problem.
I really like the style of the F-2 (I like the "boxy" shape of it as opposed to a satchel/messenger), but it seems too big for me. I did a bit of a search and saw the F-6 being described as a smaller version of the F-2, but it looks like I won't be able to fit my camera in it with a lens attached...

I just got the divider model the 1514. Definitely the way to go chances are you will want to adjust. It's smaller than my Tamrack Cyberpack 8 which i got for the laptop storage as an all in one solution. Decided i need a more portable set up.

Had it for about 4 months. I have nothing to complain about this camera. The idea of it opening it from the back of the bag is awesome. Really good padding and support if you're carrying heavy gear :).
edit: had a lowepro 100aw and 200 slingshot before and this thing is waay better! Much better support if you're out all day shooting. Tripod mounting is good too on it.

Have you considered taking it back to where you bought it? They're guaranteed.
Plus, seeing your from Toronto, check out Daymen because they own LowePro.
Hope this helps; I've found LowePro to be very generous with repair replacments.

I've confessed on other forums that I'm a "bagaholic". I have too many camera bags!
I'm very frustrated with local -- Toronto -- retailers who mark up ThinkTank bags so much. A bag that sells retail in the US for $149, sells for almost $100 Cdn more with tax in if you can find it.
As far as I know Henry's is the only retailer.
(I bought my first Nikon new in '73--an F2. I've been doing photography longer than that, and really appreciate the hobby.)

Hey guys,
Looking for a bag recommendation.
I recently upgraded with a new t2i and an 11" netbook. I'm looking for a small bag that will hold the netbook, body, 3 lenses and a flash.
I've been able to squeeze all the camera aspects into one of the medium size fidelity bags (crumper 5 mill home equiv?). I'd like something around the same size w/ a laptop sleeve. I'm looking for a inconspicuous looking messenger style bag.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have too many bags; I'm a bagaholic. I don't have the same needs as you though...I don't have a laptop.
Closest I have is a Tenba Messenger (Vistek); the large one will carry a little gear and a laptop.
Hope this helps.

Don't slap me but I'm going to bump this semi-old thread.
Looking for a minimalist shoulder bag. Slings just don't work for me and I already have the CompuDayPack for school :)
Would like it to fit my D90 with 18-105 and space for either another lens or my SB-600, but nothing more than that (maybe SD cards and microfibre :P ). My shoulders are weak and I want it to be as light as possible. Hopefully looking for something on the stylish side - I find most of Lowepro's smaller offerings tend to not be very well in this department. Crumpler is a big too expensive for my taste otherwise the 4 or 5 Million might have been good choices.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

I personally have the lowepro exchange and I can easily fit my canon xs with battery grip with 50mm 1.8 mounted on it, 18-55mm IS and a yongnuo yn-465 flash. I also have rf-602 triggers and extra memory cards and batteries in the front pockets. Even with all of this inside the bag can still easily close. You'll most likely be able to fit your nikon d90 with 18-105 lens and your flash and another lens. The bag itself is very light, due to there not being much padding, although there seems like there is enough padding to adequately protect the equipment. I also like the minimalist look of the bag. Both bags are great deals for 20$

Completely depends on your usage. If you're going to always haul all your gear around; sure, there is no harm in buying a larger bag.
What I find the most useful for a day trip, is completely different from a engagement session, to a full wedding, to a weekend trip, to a 3 week photo safari....
You'll most likely find you'll need different bags for different situations.

I like the Domke line of bags. I have a couple of the Domke F2s but I think those would be a bit too large for what you've described. Although I've not used this particular Domke bag (the F-10 JD), it certainly looks like it would work for you (not sure if the price works though).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/560314-REG/Domke_700_00S_F_10_JD_Medium_Shoulder.html
Buying from B&H is quite easy for Canadians - especially with the dollar at par with the USD - it would come out to about $110 with everything included in the price (duties, taxes, shipping, etc.)

I too got the versa large bag from SIG last week. Yes green does look better, but even red isn't too bad. It would easily fit my Alpha500 with 17-50 2.8 attached + 50mm + 70-210 + 100-200 + 42AM flash and still there's lots of space. It is said to be Crumpler 7MDH knockoff and for $20......why not.

I need something that can hold my T2i Gripped + Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, 50mm prime (either Takumar or Canon), Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, 2 flashes, Rode Video Mic (or Pro, which is a bit smaller), and a video LED light (and of course compartments for filters + triggers + batteries; if it has a slot for a 13" MBP or similar laptop, it would be perfect). Am I asking for too much with this bag or should I be alright? Any bag that might fit the description? There is no SIG here so I unfortunately can't check it out myself in person.
I doubt I will need all of that stuff at the same time but I don't like having my crap sit in it's boxes or take 10-15 minutes to pull together (and all the trips to the car and back) when you want to use it.

anybody have either the crumpler sinking barge or the tamrac evolution 8?
I'm looking at getting a bag for everyday carry around, i bring my laptop to school and want to bring my cam too. The tamrac looks like it'd be a better option but crumplers look so nice! haha

I have a similar pack, the Whickey and Cox, and it's a fantastically comfortable pack. Highly recommended if you can stomach the price tag, heh.

the whickey and cox looks pretty cool, are they discontinued? on the crumpler site it shows the karachi outpost which looks similar
http://www.crumpler.com/us/Camera-Bags/Camera-Backpacks/Karachi-Outpost-M.html?LanguageCode=EN&SKU=KO0201A
my main gripe with the crumplers is there is no side access, you have to take the bag off to get your camera

I too got the versa large bag from SIG last week. Yes green does look better, but even red isn't too bad. It would easily fit my Alpha500 with 17-50 2.8 attached + 50mm + 70-210 + 100-200 + 42AM flash and still there's lots of space. It is said to be Crumpler 7MDH knockoff and for $20......why not.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9397/largeyd.jpg
Ahh you have a green one and went and bought a red one as well? =\
I emailed SIG to see if they have anything other than Red. LOL. Here's being hopeful.

Yes this holds my stuff + has more space but seeing your gear (specially the 2.8's) it seems to be a bit pushing.

No this picture I borrowed from another forum. I would have preferred this colour but red was the only choice they had. The sales guy at SIG told me that this bag is discontinued by Versa following some troubles with Crumpler as its a 7MDH knock off

I got the fastpack 350 and use it for my trips to Japan. Same as you, I got it because I need to carry my (work) laptop with me. It contains everything I have plus all the stuff that usually goes in a carry-on. Pretty comfortable and spacious (laptop, camera, 3 lenses, flash, memory, etc).
Have a house to stay in while I'm there so I almost never take the bag with me on short side trips. I find that it is not big enough to be the only bag and too big if you have to carry 2 bags (one for clothes, other for gear). It basically serves to get my gear from one 'base' to another.
I'm currently looking for a messenger type bag that would hold a camera, flash and maybe a lens or two for those side trips.
If you do decide to get the lowepro, check out ebay (digital2000 or something like that) got mine for around US$80 if I remember correctly.

Thank you for the response. The 250 is smaller than the 350 so it might fit my needs well. Yup I was planning to buy from prodigital2000, great price there.
I quite like the look of those messenger bags too, but the gripe I have with them is they usually are single slung and put uneven weight on one shoulder. Not really a big deal if you're not carrying much but if you have it on you for the whole day it can get problematic.

I have a bag obsession...
http://ryanlauphotography.ca/personalpics/RFD/bags.JPG
I am convinced there is NO perfect bag for EVERY situation. I have given a bit of info on each bag and the uses it has. It sounds redundant but there are differences. Best thing to do is go in and take a look at one of the retailers.
Lowepro Classified 160AW
Pro - Quick access zipper on the top, stealth, holds ipad
Con - Strap feels like garbage... Cuts into your shoulder like no other
Best use - Quick outdoor shoots where you want to PJ and don't want to be noticed
Thinktank Belt system
Pro - Quick access to all lenses and accessories, Weight on the waist not the shoulders
Cons - If you put too many lenses on the belt digs into your waist. Also gets really bulky. You need a shoulder harness to distribute the weight better. Makes you look like a DORK!
Best use - Wedding shoots or other fast paced PJ work
Thinktank Retrospective 10
Pro - Shoulder strap is the most comfortable shoulder bag I have ever tried. EVER! Totally stealth with no tags advertising. Velcro can be altered to make the front flap quiet
Con - Its too wide to hold one lens but not wide enough to hold two lenses side by side
Best use - PJ work when you need to be hidden like a ninja
Thinktank Airport International
Pro - Certified carryon, Built in cable locks, holds almost anything you throw at it
Con - The pullout lever is kinda flimsy but haven't had problems with it *knock on wood*.
Best use - travel photography or storing gear
Lowepro Primus AW
Pro - holds a fullsized body with 70-200 and extender mounted. Easy access through the side. Super comfy on the back even with heavy loads.
Con - Can't hold much else except for maybe one big or two small lenses
Best use - day trips where you predominately need a easy access telephoto ie. hiking/birding
Lowepro Orion
Pro - great medium sized bag to carry both gear and lunches =0.
Con - PITA to get the gear out since you have to unzip the bag in half
Best use - Day to day use when going to school or work and need space for gear and lunch
Lowepro flipside 300
Pro - Comfy, opening from behind to prevent theft
Con - Straps aren't as comfy as others and can get annoying after long periods. Tripod holster is only feasible for smaller tripods (not sure if this is a con as it should be expected)
Best use - When in a country where pickpocketing is common
Lowepro Computrekker AW
Pro - A lot of room for a day pack, thick straps, holds lappy
Con - When a lot of gear is inside the laptop slot is rendered useless because you cant fit it in anymore. So bulky a lot of slack pulls the gear away from your back making it uncomfortable
Best use - Day trips where a variety of glass is needed but need more mobility than a suitcase.
The rest of the bags I don't use anymore -_-. Should really get rid of them.... This photo is after I've sold off a bunch of bags too... UGH.
Hope this helps!

i love my Kata 3N1-22 bag (from B & H)
http://www.kata-bags.com/product.asp?Version=video&p_Id=19772
served me pretty well on my previous oversea trips..
only disatisfation was that it was alittle troublesome
gettin' access to the main compartment becuz
i have a tripod holder, which means i gotta unsnap the 2 side buckle
on the bag, and also unsnap the 2 tripod holder buckle,
and then unzip and gain access to my other lens and other accessories.
however, everythin' else is very good, the extra netbook compartment
came very very handy if u need to put a netbook or even maps or
travel guide.
very well padded straps....but when i have full gear + other crap in my bag,
i would also bring my trolley so that i drag the +30lbs bag w/ 2 wheels instead
of addin' burden to my shoulders....

Yes it big, fits in my Alpha A500 with 17-50 f2.8 attached, F42 flash, 70-210 f4 beeercan, 100-200 f4.5 mini beercan, couple of primes and still there is space if you like to stack up lenses in 2 tiers (with off course pads/separators in betteen them.............you get 8 of them in different sizes). how big is the upper compartment? how many body/lens (70-200) can you put in there? i just want an idea to see if i can fit those baby stuff in the upper compartment.
the camera compartment, can you fit a 5D with grip and still access it from the side? padding ok for protection?
if access from the side, do you need to lose 1 strap and wear it as a sling style?
what else can you hold on the outter pocket (semi-open)? a notebook perhaps?

Dimensions are identical to the 7mdh. It is as close to an identical copy as you can get short of it saying crumpler on it. I would be extremely surprised if the two weren't made on the same assembly line

Having owned both the 7MDH and the Versa, I highly doubt that. The build quality, materials, and general feel of the Versa is drastically inferior to the genuine article. But of course, these are the differences you'd expect when you're playing barely more than 10% of the real 7MDH's price.

With the grip you will have to take the shoulder straps off. But you can swivel the bag around your waist and unzip it like normal. I would say its super comfy. For 100 its worth it. Well made.

Your general impression (what you like, what you don't like, how you feel about it in comparison to any other bags you may have), whether you think the tripod-holder would actually securely hold a tripod, and what you're able get fit in it (in terms of lenses/body).

I'll give you my impression thus far. I only recently got it so I have not put it through a rigorous test (e.g. taking it on vacation, backpacking, etc). My previous bag was a Lowepro Micro Trekker 100AW. Lovely little bag.
So far, I find the bag to be very well made. Everything seems heavy duty, though sometimes it makes it stiffer to use. I'm sure with use, it'll get better. The only negative things I've notice it he side pockets for the water bottle doesn't seem very big, so it might only fit narrow bottles. I prefer the side pockets from my MEC school bag. The front pocket doesn't seem that big. It's smaller then the Micro Trekker, but I usually only keep some misc stuff in there. With Micro Trekker, I can cram a lot more stuff. Also the side pocket is made up of this cloth that seems to attract my cats hair. My cat is white, but can't really blame the bag.
Now, I'm a pretty big person but the bag still feels comfortable to wear even once I added all my equipments and tripod. My wife, who is extremely petite, liked the bag as well, though after re-adjusting it from my size. We tried quite a few bag before settling on this bag, including different Lowepro, Kata, Tamrac, and Crumpler bags.
The main storage area. It's a lot bigger then my old bag. I can easily fit my D7000, D50, 18-200mm, 35mm, SB-600 comfortably. One thing that I didn't like was that the bag is deep. I guess it's for the people with a vertical grip and several smaller lens (so they can stand the lens up for easier access). Remember, the bag is thin and long and to get your stuff out, you either go from the top, or you have put the bag down and open it up. I put my camera on the top so my wife can just grab it while I'm still wearing the backpack.
The tripod hold is different from the pro and HD. There's a pocket whee the tripod sticks 2 of it's feet in, then you use a strap to secure from the top. I can safely bend over to pick up something without getting wacked by my tripod. I have a Manfrottoe CX3Pro with Markins Q3 ball head, so it's a fairly light setup.
Hope this helps, but I would serious go try the bags out. A comfortable bag should really be your number one concern.

Thanks for the detailed reply; I really, really appreciate it.
You are definitely right about trying it on in person, but none of the stores I have been to so far appear to carry the Street Walker. I certainly don't want to order something I've never tried on before, but at the same time, I haven't been too happy with the ones that are available in-store here.
That is definitely good to know about the depth. I expect to be putting a 5D Mark III (when it comes out) in there, along with a 24-70, 70-200, and at least one prime lens. Hopefully it can handle those fairly well.
It's also good to hear that the tripod holder is fairly functional, and I imagine I would be putting in a similarly sized combination (Gitzo GT2540T + Q3T).
Once again, thank-you for taking the time to respond to my post.

It will feel similar to the Street Walker Pro. I was actually going to get the Pro, but with the Henry's sale I decided to get the non-Pro as it seems to be almost the same size and feature.

I was going to pick up one tonight. I was either going to get a bag for just camera gear, or one I could carry a laptop with as well. I didn't want a backpack, but I also didn't want to shell out $320 for a Brazillion Dollar Home. I ended up with a beautiful National Geographic bag.
My old regular messenger bag with a padded insert:

Laptop sleeve and insert, not very comfortable:

Being a normal bag, it just crumples like so...

Buckles instead of velcro, nice but I wish they were magnetic

Inside:

Included insert, small and doesn't fit much. I reused my old insert as it was bigger and fit perfectly:

Laptop in place:

Money shot with my gear. Taken with my camera phone since my real camera was IN the bag
