People have heard on the radio or on a news press conference that these stores are going to be lowering their prices to the U.S prices. People have been getting stories such as books are going 10% lower or 20% or even better 50%. Well you guys heard right. The truth is its not. The media actually misinterpreted the info these books stores are giving. yes the stores are giving 10-20% off but only if u've spent $35+. What these stores are trying to do is having more instore promotions to accomidate with the strong canadian dollar. Bestsellers are are reduced to 30% off or 40% off if u have an irewards membership. The reason why the books are not being sold at U.S. prices are because the prices are set 6 months before publishers publish the books therefore companies buy books at that time the currency was not as strong as it is today. anyways my point is stop giving a hard time to those who work for these bookstores, they're not the ones who set the prices and are making minimum wages so they dont give two sh*ts what you think. if u want to complain, complain to the publishers who sets the prices.

So...you copied a Chapters press release and reworded it as a rant to defend a company (who I'm betting you have nothing to do with ;) )?

Well you can keep paying more for your books at Chapters however, for myself, I'll be ordering it deeply discounted from Amazon.com (without paying for an Ireward card).

Then how does the OP explain Walmart's U.S. prices for books? Are they taking a loss of $5.00 per book? I doubt it. We're being gouged and it's been going on for years. Even a few years ago the U.S. price was still less than the Canadian one after the exchange.

What about the drugstore? Are they losing lots of money? How did the govt let Chapters become a monopoly? If you don't like their prices there is no other bricks & mortar bookstore to turn to.

Like the second poster, I'm going to Amazon.com.

A. Walmart may have shipped the books in directly from the US in order to avoid the Canadian distributors.
B. Walmart probably does not have as full a selection as Chapters does and so the books may actually be a loss leader type of situation.
C. Even a few years ago, the prices were roughly equivalent. I used to work as a bookstore manager and did the buying for my store.
D. There are other bricks and mortar bookstores but Chapters is close to being a monopoly.

i went into chapters to purchase some magazines, and saw their pathetic sign that tried to explain why i have to pay $2 more for magazines even with the strong dollar. I then decided to walk out the door across to walmart, and picked them up there for american prices. I guess as much as chapters wants to explain the situation, everyone will pretty say "o so thats why" and then walk across to their competitors.

Chapters, WBBS, etc are price gouging. What scammers. Went there last night 6pm (WBBS), store was empty. The book I was ready to buy CAD $55, USD 35. I even asked if they will be using the USD price and scammer said "the CAD price only".

"Indigo Books and Music last week said total revenue for the second quarter increased 14.8% to $209.2 million. Chapters Indigo.ca saw revenues jump more than 50% to $26.3 million."

What is a good place to buy online from USA? Even with shipping that ONE book will cost less. Might as well buy a few.

I've noticed that the prices of comics and graphic novels are about even with the US price. I have no idea if that's a recent change or not, but the prices have dropped significantly since last year.

I was interested in picking up the Captain America Omnibus and decided to check Amazon.ca to see how much I was going to get gouged. However, I was surprised by how close the prices were:

Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Captain-America-Brubaker-Omnibus-Vol/dp/0785128662/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0083475-1703930?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194466943&sr=8-1): $47.24 USD
Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/Captain-America-Ed-Brubaker-Omnibus/dp/0785128662/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/702-2003331-5976007?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194467374&sr=8-1): $56.69 CAD
Chapters (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Captain-America-Ed-Brubaker-Omnibus-Ed-Brubaker/9780785128663-item.html?ref=Books%3a+Search+Top+Sellers): $49.46 CAD

The MSRP on this book is $74.99 USD, to boot.

The prices for YOTSUBA&! volume 1 are pretty much even too:

Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/YOTSUBA-1-Yotsubato-Graphic-Novels/dp/1413903177/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/104-0083475-1703930?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194467535&sr=8-3): $9.99 USD
Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/YOTSUBA-1-Azuma-Kiyohiko/dp/1413903177/ref=pd_bowtega_2/702-2003331-5976007?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194467544&sr=1-2): $10.79 CAD
Chapters (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/YOTSUBA-Volume-1-Azuma-Kiyohiko/9781413903171-item.html?ref=Search+Books%3a+%2527yotsuba%2527): $9.05 CAD

It's also interesting that Chapters seems to be cheaper than Amazon.ca in most cases. I always expect it to be the other way around, considering that Amazon's so huge.

Anyways, if you're a Canadian looking for some comics or manga, then chances are you can get a better deal here than in the USA. Chapters seems to already be using the American MSRP as their list price. Oddly enough.

Oh, and you can claw a little bit more cash back (4%) if you buy from Chapters through one of those rebate sites (GCR.ca or Deal Guild, which I apparently can't link to).

I remember reading one of the thread in the OffTopic section where some guy complaint for the cost of paying in USD for a magazine but the lady refused of him paying in Canadian dollars even Canadian dollars were greater than American doller.
