Just wondering if anyone has carried an LCD HDTV from the US back to Canada? If so, how much were you taxed? I mean there is no way you can lie about a 46" TV.
MAIN QUESTION:
I will be heading to the states for 3 days with my family. So 3 days means our tax exemption would be $400/person. Now there are 4 of us going, so the total tax exemption would be $1600 and the HDTV I want is only $1100US...so NO TAX on the HDTV?

i don't think that you can combine exemptions like that, so you would only be exempt 400 on the tv

I agree with 5abSingh.
I also don't think you can split one item into four like you plan to do.

Exemptions CANNOT in any way, shape or form be combined.

I did read the declaration but it does state that personal tax exemptions are for goods that YOU use. So can I tell customs this: "the HDTV is for the entire family so all 4 of us are using the HDTV and splitting the cost of the TV."
Has someone tried this?

You can't do this, it is NOT possible and there are no loop holes, trust me.

No. It is a single item. $400 can be deducted from the TV under those circumstances, no more.

I thought once you go over your personal exemption that you lose that exemption and you now have to pay taxes on the entire amount???

That's for the 24hr $50 exemption
I really wish they'd change that one.. it confuses the hell out of people.

While you're down there, also buy an inverter so that you can plug it into your car cigarette socket. That way you can claim on the way back that the 46" TV was with you on the way to the USA and is used to keep your ADD children distracted.

LOL, yeah, that would probably make my day if I dealt with a guy who told me that and was serious about it.

When we went to new york for 5 days we had bought a tv and was bringing it back. It was a family of 4 (4 x $400 = $1600) and when at customs he asked whats the total value of goods and we said $1500.
Then he let us go:razz:

Unless you get a rookie CSB Agent and ask you all the questions in the book...like What was the total you all spent, how much did each person spend, etc.

Because we all know you should only be asked one question at the border.

When I bought my 42" a couple months ago, the store was about a 20 min drive there and back, got the tv home lugged it into the basment plugged it in and an entire row of pixels was burnt out at the top of the screen. It was a pita to pack it up and haul it back to the store 20 mins away, got the replacement and it didnt work right either, had to exchange it too. Having to take it back to the store in a different country would really suck. Just something to keep in mind. Also my last trip back from the states with for $800 worth of stuff between the 2 of us was did we have anything over $400 in value.

Yes it was but he let us go
Also we had opened up the tv and tested it at my families place to see if there was any problems before bringing it.

Really? I don't recall saying only 1 question gets asked.
I usually get on average 3 questions.
Last time I got 2 questions. Should have seen the CSB's agent reaction when she asked if I had any guns, drugs knives etc. and I said yes. I told her it was a chopping knife for cooking still in the package.
Last, Last time round i had something like 6-7.
I always pay my taxes anyways and report the correct amount.
