I just got my nifty new laptop so I have a computer while on the road... it came with Vista Premium...
...and it won't run ~75% of my software.
GRRRRR!!!!! I'll have to spend an afternoon when I get home just getting rid of Vista and falling back to XP with all the proper drivers for the lappy components.
Stupid Vista. [thpppttt!!]

List off 75% of your software. I've been using Vista since April and hardly had any issues. Maybe here and there, but very few overall.

Oh great....I am pretty sure 'Santa' is bringing me a new laptop for Xmas...better make sure I hunt down yet another copy of Windows to convert it!!

Unless all of these are cracking tools it can't be entirely true. I made the jump in July with a new HP desktop and haven't looked back since. So far Vista has had only a few minor annoyances but manageable.

My music software is giving the most grief, as well as some older games. I guess I need to get newer software.... $$$ :(

What programs are you trying to use anyway? I understand if there are a few compatibility issues here or there but 75% of your programs don't work?! I can honestly say, I haven't had a single compatibility problem after I switched to Vista. A number like 75% sounds completely outrageous to me.

75% sounds like a load of BS. List all of your programs, and flag the ones that don't work.

I just got grief even trying to run some shareware software like UrQuan Masters... refusing to even boot, requiring the fix-it wizard.
Same goes for SynthFont, free music software (though it appears to work intermittently now...) Old Master or Orion2 will not work at all. Period.
Garbage... so far I just HATE it - even if it does look pretty.
And I'm not making this up, you jerk!

well 1st remove all of the "pretty" features(uncheck Aero) and then it will start speeding up more like XP.
then before u run the setup exe, open the properties and click on the compatibility tab, when XP came out it also had issues like this. check off RUN as xp service pack2 and also check off RUN as administrator. click apply and then right click on the exe and click run as admin.
this has solved every compatibility issue i have come across. so far.;)
vista runs just as faster as XP, for me.
AND vista has not had the dreeded XP crashes/freeze ups at all. YET.;)
downloads r available to fix other issues. google it.
"AND vista has not had the dreeded XP crashes/freeze ups at all. YET." Are you kidding me? What freeze? What crash? I haven't turned my computer off in over 2 months now. Still runs great. I have had it since the beginning, and its stability has simply blown me away. I install program and plug things into it and the thought of it crashing doesn't even remotely exist in my mind.

I remember 5-6 years ago XP ran like a POS when it came out, but I never had the problem with Vista like I did with XP. So comparing with XP that is finally stable after 2 service packs, I'd say vista is better.

Yes, using Vista can be frustrating..
but you may have problems installing/downgrading back to XP on SATA drive.. You may want to read ahead..
I too have a laptop with Vista.. tried to downgrade to XP, but couldn't. So I'm stuck with Vista.. been using for a month, and getting hang of it.. but Vista still frustrates me here and there..
Dang.. I should've gone with MacBook Pro.. sigh..

The only program that I've run across that won't run in Vista that bugs me is the VPN/Entrust software, more specifically the Entrust portion. Oh well, that's what a vm is for.

Vista can't take all the blame. Many software companies where slow to upgrade their soft's to be vista compliant or they just didn't bother, pissing off their users.
I remember a lot of my older softwares didn't run on XP, I just gave up on them. There is always a better program out there.

I have UrQuan Masters and MoO. I will try tonight on vista when I have time. Have you run Moo in DosBox? have you tried properties-> run as windows98?
The only stuff I haven't been able to get working on vista is intel Thermal tool and speed fan which are both hardware dependant things. All software type stuff I've tried has worked.

Speedfan works fine for me in Vista64. The only issue is it will not get SMART info without being run as admin and you can't run as admin from the startup folder. I just live without the harddrive info.

I was just gonna say that...beat me to it.
I have been using Vista Ultimate since April. No Problems at all. I had to update some software big deal...that is expected with a new operating system and the fact that mine is x64.
Quit whining that my software that is 2+ years old doesn't work. Or my computer is slow running vista because it is 2+ years old. I'm sorry I have no sympathy because you didn't do a little research.

Anyone who says disabling Aero speeds up your computer instantly loses all credibility and should never be allowed to give OS-related opinions ever again.

XP had the same issues at launch.
I beta tested Vista for my company and did a comprehensive report on it.
The only flaws it had was compatibility with older hardware and software.
Now that some time has passed, users should have very minimal to zero problems at all if they have an up to date computer with up to date software.
All of my peers are dual booting XP and Vista with Vista usage at 85% of their time, the other 15% XP for older games and software. I'm one of the last few to stick on to XP for our multiplayer gaming sessions.

I am using Vista for my Lenovo laptop at work and so far no issues. I only use it for MS Office and web surfing which is probably why it doesn't give me any problem. I would not dream of using Vista for gaming at home yet.
I will wait for a few service packs on Vista before moving to it.

There's nothing wrong with Vista. When I updated my main machine at home, the only software that needed newer versions was Paint Shop Pro by Jasc (now by Corel) and Nero.
Everything else ran the same.
Also when updating my laptop to Vista, I had no compatibility issues with software, and all drivers were found.
If updating the OS causes some software to need a new version, that's actually your own fault for running old stuff.

I was frustrated.... I've spent a few precious hours updating some of my software.... it's getting a LITTLE better.
I'm going to have to spend some time researching Vista tips to get things running even better, and either upgrade or live without the software I want.
Newer stuff works okay.... Alcohol120% caused a huge crash, but I'm getting the newer version now...
...okay. Deep breath. :)

I'm sure there are compelling reasons for switching to Vista, other than the cool graphics, but as a non-techie, I'm not clear on what they are.
Just a word from the non-techie world - when I read these posts that say 'All you have to do is this and this and this' to make Vista run, half the time I don't know what in the hell you guys are talking about. Ok, maybe I sort of do, but my sister sure as hell doesn't. The question for us is this - is Vista good for people who don't know anything about computers? People like that have their computers and they have their old programs and they are comfortable running them. Should we say 'If you don't have the wherewithal and gumption to load new programs and learn them, you don't deserve to be on a computer'? Now I'm thinking of my Dad, 81 and going strong, who doesn't allow me to do a damn thing to his machine. He can check his email, do his word processing, and use a few programs that he has been using since about '98. He doesn't want change. Vista is no good for him.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who are having new machines bought for them by family members who just want a faster version of their old computer. Vista doesn't seem to be any good for them, for the time being. Maybe in a year or two?
Anyhow, XP Pro is supported until 2012, right? That's what's going on my sister's new laptop.
btw... I was talking with Lenovo a couple of nights ago re: my sister's new lappie. I asked the guy about Vista vs. XP Pro. He said that they were running XP Pro at the worksite and that he was still running it at home, even though he could have upgraded for free. This may be completely irrelevant, please flame the crap out of me if you wish :)
Having asked a bunch of people about this in the past few weeks, I have developed the strong impression that Vista is perfectly fine... if you're a techie.

People that do not know computers usually don't support change because they don't want to learn it.
Unfortunately in this market, it is ever changing..one of the fastest changing markets in the world.
If you don't know what your doing...pay somebody to do it. If you don't know how to use it..pay someone to train you. Or if you know someone get them to do both. If you are willing to learn and change and do the reading, all the power to you.
Otherwise don't bother at all.
