So I watched American History X a while back and I really liked it so I was wondering if you guys knew of any other movies of the same sort, serious films that leave a mark on you or keep you thinking. Shawshank Redemption was like this too. So far Ive got City of God on my list to watch and Schindler's List. Any others?

Seen hotel rwanda, coach carter and jarhead and pianist.

The Green Mile and Reign Over me are good ones I should list. Ive seen most recent films, it'd be best if there were films from 1990's

Brent

uhm, the op mentioned it in his first post. . .

anyways, to the others i'd add:

united 93
into the wild
the passion of the christ

of course, there are plenty of emotionally manipulative films, but the ones i named are what i would consider "moving"

Adam Sandler's Click! (if you can over see the comedy of it all and see it through to the end, you'll know why)

I'm surprised no one mentioned Titanic from 1997..

Alright alright:), I read it once, but must have skipped the last few words.

Add A Walk To Remember, a little cheesy, but I had a tear in my eye.

City of God.

The Constant Gardener is also a really great movie by the same director. I had zero interest in seeing it, and accidentally did because I was too hungover to find anything else to do... But excellent movie.

To those who mentioned "Hotel Rwanda", I'd recommend "Shooting Dogs" which is also about the Rwanda Genocide.

Previously mentioned movies I agree with:
- Reign Over Me: really shows Adam Sandler's depth
- Titanic: a great recreation of a tragedy
- The Notebook: simply a fantastic, idealistic love story
- Life is Beautiful: humour in light of horror

Other movies I found moving:
- AI: found it very thought-provoking contrasting the idea of humans creating machines with feelings against the idea of said humans cruelly disposing of these machines
- Pleasantville: the whole thinking outside the box theme
- RENT: loved it as a broadway show and thought it transferred to film excellently
- Only You: cheesy movie - yet, I really liked how the idea of "fate" is portrayed in the sense that what you always thought was fate, wasn't really fate, but ended up being fate anyway. Confusing, I know, unless you watch the movie.

Forest Gump
Good Will Hunting (I think this one has been metioned)

I know this one may seem a bit strange, but I want to say Ray. While not really touching, it does give a great insight to one of the world's most impressive musicians.

Before Sunrise

then

Before Sunset.

People waited almost a decade to find out what happened to the two leads in Sunrise. And with the open ending for Sunset, you want to know if the two of them finally get together in a third film.

Done.

one of my favourites is "the fisher king" with robin williams and jeff bridges. city of god is amazing too (pretty heavy - filmed right there as well). yes, schindlers list....hotel rwanda.....life is beautiful....shawshank redemption... braveheart.....gangs of new york.... the list goes on.
moving films but not necessarily "heavy" .... a league of their own (seriously, i laugh and cry every time i see it, yes i'm a wus, lol)....the prime of miss jean brodie... it's a wonderful life (hey, christmas is coming, this is a must see).... jesus christ superstar....forrest gump.....stand by me....wow, there are a LOT and i've left out quite a few of my favourites probably.

I can backup the movies Hotel Rwanda and Schindler's List.

I also watched this one movie in English Class two years ago, it was not in English, and it was a man w/ family being sent to a concentration camp. Quite a moving story. oh, i got its name. Life Is Beautiful.

The Fountain! Its such an incredible movie. So intricate, and so beautifully made. The scenes and storeline are just mind blowing and the soundtrack is just magnificent. If you really want to enjoy it, I suggest using some recreational pharmaceuticals.

Another one is Half-Nelson.

A documentary type film that actually made me cry was "God Grew Tired of Us". Its about a group of kids from Sudan who lost their parents, then walked all over Africa until they settled in to a make shift village before being given a chance to move to America. That film is beyond words as well. Its funny, sad and moving at the same time.
