I am wondering if these are good pot lights to use in my basement?

I have used the Catalina lights. They worked out well and were easy enough to install. The connection boxes on each light are a little small, and there isn't much forgiveness if you make the hole too large (I'd buy a hole saw attachment for your drill). Otherwise, I like them and can't beat the price.

I have used the Catalina potlights as well. They worked fine and looked nice. One of the bulbs burned out after 1.5 months but they are easy to replace.

Personally, I prefer using a 4" enclosure with PAR20 capable lights, but the principle is the same. The installation of either type is incredibly easy and well worth your time.

That is what I've heard, that the pot lights in those multi packs usually burn out very quickly. Is that true?

I don't think so kixx9o5, halogen bulbs if handled correctly seem to last for years. We have halogen bulbs in our house that are still original bulbs from when we replaced the fixtures 6 years ago. We installed similar potlights in our kitchen almost a year ago and they are great. The only thing I would say is that you may find you want to install a dimmer switch, halogen light is very bright white vs. the yellow light of incandescent.

I haven't had an issue with the bulbs burning out, but my neighbour that has the same lights has replaced several. I'm not sure if it's cheap original bulbs or if they were handled badly.

These are the lights that can only be installed in an un-insulated ceiling right? So no second floor installs unless you build some kind of enclosure, which means climbing into the nasty attic.

Home Depot sells a similar 3" version for the GU10 bulbs that IS suitable for insulated spaces....so no trips to the attic unless you want to :)

Unfortunately, we bought some over the summer and I've installed two of them already. No returning them now. We made two mistakes: Didn't know about the insulation part, and white looks better. SS should be left to appliances.

I decided on going with Home Depot's 4" Nextlite Easylite for $87.50 6pack.
I've heard these ones are pretty good. Any comments?

I used that exact set in my kitchen reno - super easy to install, pretty well put together, and they look great. Everyone comments on the difference since I moved from a single overhead light to 6 of these on a dimmer.

I installed the Catalina lights in my basement and found the supplied bulbs burned out after a short time. I purchased some replacement bulbs, same wattage, but they appear brighter and the lights now cycle on and off periodically. I believe there is a thermal switch in the cans that prevents overheating? Has anyone else had this experience?
