Anyone interested in discussing the pros and cons of this laptop?

Just as a note to anyone interested, I have requested clarification through NCIX's sales inquiry + posted on forum for this notebook on NCIX's web site regarding confirmation of the configuration (cause it seems every vendor is listing a different configuration for the same part number!).

I'm in the market for a mid-sized laptop with a decent graphics card as well...

Here is a good review of the Asus F8sv-a1
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=189437

My biggest problem is whether I should with purchase a laptop from a smaller retailer and risk getting stuck with a unit with a dead pixel (which would really bug me).

However, most of the Asus, LG, and business line HPs (with the specs I'm looking for) are only sold by smaller retailers... :(

I considered the Asus F8sv but opted for the 8510p.

I got a 8510p for 1266 with pricematching at cendirect.com. It's a 15.4" wide screen laptop. Comparable in size and portability with the Macbook Pro. Has a better video card than the F8sv, better batteries and better build quality (magnesium alloy + spill proof keyboard + steel hinges > carbon fibre plastic). Threw in a stick of 2gb RAM for $59 to give 3gb of RAM.

With tax, shipping and everything I got it at: $1418 (no PST since cendirect is in Quebec, I am in Ontario).

The F8SV has pretty poor battery life (so does all ASUS laptops), flexes a bit since it is plastic, and can get warm given its specs. I think its a bit overpriced for an entry level consumer line laptop (compared to other business books). It does look pretty but that doesn't mean spit if it isn't durable; unless you don't plan to carry it around much.

Thanks, Toronto1818, I have seen that link - I think that is about the only decent review on the web site.

Asus warranty details may aid your decision.....

With regards to my question on configuration, I have yet to hear back from NCIX on this....but Excaliber PC (the review on notebookreview.com) came back to me with perhaps an answer on a couple of items.

He says the F8SV-A1 model code 90NNPA3232238CQL350Y is the standard Asus part number for the Sv-A1 model.

My issue is that the Canadian supplier for the F8SV-A1 has what I believe to be an incorrect / incomplete spec on their web site that is getting repeated from one sales outlet to another.....so the info that I have to date is that, contrary to all those listing the F8SV-A1 does have the DVI-D port and infrared and the Fingerprint module and bluetooth...but no TPM. It has 1280x800 WXGA rather than a 1440x900 WXGA+ screen (could you even read text on a 14-inch screen at 1440x900??? - I have hard enough time with my 19-inch desktop LCD at that res!). There does not seem to be any concensus on whether the 8600M GT video ram is DDR2 or DDR3. I also don't think the DVD drive is a lightscribe unit in the A1. Otherwise it appears the specs are correct.

If any has or has access to a F8SV-A1 I would love to have impressions posted here and my configuration assumptions confirmed.

I wouldn't say that the HD 2600 on the HP is better than the 8600 GT on the Asus. Although they perform very similar in benchmark, the 8600 GT still has the upper hand. If one wants to consider a laptop equiped with the HD 2600, he/she can go for the F8-SA-- same spec as the SV, except for the vid chipset.
