Hi guys, well this is my first vroom vroom and i have a couple questions. Maybe someone here can help me out. its a Neon Highline, 95, automatic

my biggest concern for the car is the power. My gf has a 1995 neon as well, and when i push the pedal on that car....it makes big PULL sound.....im sure u know what i mean. on my car, it seems to slowly pick up speed. there is no pull. any reason why? Do spark plugs have anything to do with this? cause i havent changed them, but i bought brand new ones just in case. im trying anything. And i get the feeling the car starts off in second gear. which bring me to my next question.

I can put the car in 1st gear. i can put it in D, 2nd gear, but if i try putting it in 1st..i have to hold it in that position so i can move the car. I hope that was clear. In other words, in order for me to move the car in 1st gear, i have to hold the shift in that place, or else it will go back to second. Any reason why?

I hope there are neon enthusiasts on this forum that can help me out. id love to hear some tips on what i can do.

Two things:
a) is the problem the SOUND or the actual acceleration? You're not being too clear.

b) does her car have the same engine? first gen Neons were available with a 2.0L SOHC and a 2.0L DOHC; it would not surprise me if the transmissions in the DOHC Sport models was also tuned more aggressively.

a. The tranny is not down shifting when you jab the gas, which only the ECU will do if its in full D mode.

b. If its an Auto please leave it in D, changing gears on the go isn't what auto is for and definitely not from an old neon (newer cars have paddle shifters or tiptronic)

Actually, I believe they had decent HP for what they were. I know stock talons were basically neons with better exteriors.

Not the Talon Turbos..

your description is very vague.
Others who have replied are guessing, a road test by an experienced mechanic will determine the problem for sure.
95 Neon, I feel sorry for you bud, Dodge has not made a mistake this bad since the K car.

Do you ever have something useful to say?

Stop bashing the dude on his car, he came asking for help, not to have some ******* with too much time that thinks he's superior because he drives a Honda Accord make fun of his car. He drives a Neon as his first car, get over it.

Speaking of dying auto trannies, you should know this better then anyone with the 6th gen fail-o-matics.

I read your posts on TAC also, and you're either 16 or just annoying as hell.

As for the OP, how many clicks is on the car?

Owning a neon is a big commitment. time and money commitment!
These are cheap to buy for a reason and takes a fortune to maintain.

I should know I owned one. The folks on the neons forum website are very knowledgeable. Have a look there.

heh, i had a good laugh at some of ure posts guys. heh, i do kno its a very bad car, and i got it for free so no loss for me :D

to this point, i put in only 140 bux and im driving up and down. And yes, i do kno its a problematic car which is precisely why im hesitant to put much money in it.
the car has 204000 clicks on it, and its the SOHC version.

When i say pull and sound, ...it means you feel a certain pull and a raised engiine sound that ANY auto does. Ive driven plenty cars, and wouldnt consider myself a noob on cars. its just that this particular was given to me, so i have no idea of waht the REAL condition is.

Thanks for all the comments guys, one last thing, can anyone recommend a mechanic who can possible take me and the car for a ride and give me a diagnoistic on it? do they charge for this? thanks

your best bet is to go to this website and ask them.. after all, they own the same vehicles as you and probably have members who have encountered it.

and you might have to restate your problem.. if it is just first gear... just use D to drive till the car dies.. i don't see any reason why you should be using the first gear.

and next time, posting a short cilps with your digital camera will benefit other mechanics/specialist to diagnose the problem for you :)

0-100 is around 9.x seconds on those cars.

Checked for a blown head gasket? (they all do it, even my mothers '97 with only 68,000kms on it finally blew the gasket last month)

Sounds like the transmission linkage cable is shifting/slipping. the neons.org people have various fix guides on the site.

When the dealership had my Firebird for 3 months while rebuilding the engine, I got to drive a bunch of different neons as loaners.. they all behaved differently.. one of them didn't start to accelerate strongly until it got to 3000rpm, and then took off hard... Chrysler denied there was a problem with that one.. the 0-60 on that car was closer to 14 seconds.
