Suppose I found the ideal used car, pay it cash, whatever, can I drive it right away or I must have purchased the car insurance before?

What's the correct procedure? Please advise.

Thanks.

so you couldn't drive the car home, you had to wait until you purchased insurance?

or could you drive the car after you bought it for a few days without insurance? is there a period of non-insurance after car purchase?

You cant drive the car without insurance. You will screw up very bad if you have an accident, hit any object on the road or even a person.

You don't buy a car like you buy a cloth I think. Not like you go there, pay, go.
Just call your insurance company say you are picking up the car that date and have the insurance policy effective on that date. Doesn't matter if the contract isn't arrived by mail yet, just write down the policy # and keep it with you in case anything happen.

what insurance companies you suggest?

planning on buying a used car, around 5k.

I'm 36, canadian citizen, just got my G license, however, I have a driver's licence since 1999 from another country, where I was raised.

Are they gonna rip me? >:(

i had the seller drop off the car at my house, so no law breaking here

the problem with that is that my insurance company couldn't give me a policy no# on demand (belair), so i couldn't buy the car and insurance on the same day :|

If you are already insured (at least in Ontario), you can add the new vehicle to the insurance after buying it (I think you have a week, IIRC). You will still be insured on this new vehicle, even though it is not listed on the policy.

or if you, your friend or your family has CAA membership, tow the car to your home.

+1, free towing! I already did it 3 times this year!

We just got a 2nd car (used)

Got the UVIP, e-test, safety, VIN #
Called my insurance (StateFarm) to add the car/VIN # to my existing policy, effectively on the "day" we get the car (which is the day we visited MTO to get the license plate too)

You do NOT want to drive the car without insurance, or the plate
