Which 4WD system is better off-road?
- Mitsu (12 Dakar win isn't just a fluke)
- Jeep (Old brand name, been around since WWI)
Who else is out that? MB, Isuzu, Land Rover...
Which system will be the best off-road? I don't know too much about off-road driving, but Mitsu's 12 Dakar win seems to prove a lot...what do you guys think?..

the dakar vehicles are pretty much custom built machines. they don't share too many parts with consumer vehicles.
vehicles you can buy, i'd say landrover and toyota landcrusiers. they're the most popular around the world for extreme conditions

Subaru and Audi... but not for serious off-road conditions

I see....I thought that Mitsu Montero is quite capable of off-road too, not sure how it holds against the Rover...

Land Rover Defender or Toyota Land Cruiser (well not the latest 2 gen which are too civilized) or Merc G Wagon. Pure mechanical goodness

sorry to hear that it got hit...was it a total?

Are you really comparing AWD with 4WD? Definately two differnt processes. What are you actually looking for with regards to performance.

4Runner, Landcruiser are good bets.
Land Rovers have massive reliability problems. I know several owners and all they do is complain. I wouldn't take one 4x4ing for the life of me. We own a 07 4runner and it's built like a tank.
Explorer, Jeep are probably decent options as well.

Most SUV's are for extra traction getting groceries, not crawling hills.
Jeep has more than one type of transfer case available too. For the most part, AWD (where front wheels drive about 60%, rear 40%) works great for regular population. This can transfer depending upon the manufacturer, 90% either way.
True 4WDers like it when they can lock in the transfer case and their axles (lockers in some Jeeps). Most of this type is done aftermarket for the hardcore. Rallying is a different animal than rockcrawling. Lockers make it kind of hard to turn a corner at a traffic light for most peeps. Depends upon what you're looking for and what you want to do.

AWD is for city and highway work.4WD is for off road work.
The AWD is probably what 99% of people would use .4WD is great off roading or getting out deep ruts or snow banks.
For AWD go for Subaru or Toyota.
For 4WD go for Toyota 4runner ,Tundra,Tacoma or FJ .These are the best for the money .Don`t even bother looking at Jeep.

Of course, if cost is a consideration, then Jeep should be considered. They fine, I had one for years as a company car (for driving equipment through snowbelts). FWIW, I mean a real jeep and not the compass or such...

Jeeps are junk. They are great off road vehicles .For regular road use they are crap .High repair cost and the famous Chrysler quality and dependability .

Thanks for all the inputs. We already own a subie, so that takes care of the day-to-day city driving.
I am looking for off-road vehicle, and those Jeep looks pretty decent for the price tag. Toyota are nice, but just too damn expensive.....>:(
How about isuzu....anyone has experience with them? Or Mitsu Montero, looks like I can pick a used one up for around 20k....:)

From personal experience, I'll have to disagree. My vehicle was fine on the road, though used a quite a bit on gas. The ride was not luxury, but it was not poor either. Now, there is a difference if you are talking the old TJ or more modern Cherokee or even newer models.
As for repair cost, it was not costly at all, no worse than my wife's Sable and far less than many imports.
It was also built like a tank. It survived a collision that would have destroyed the front end of my blazer.
Now, that all being said, I'd not buy one again...nor any SUV for that matter.
