If you are comfortable with a 1.8" LCD, then I would say this is perhaps the best megazoom camera on the market. Don't get too wrapped up on the 6 mega pixel limit, because you can do 8x10 and 8x14 images with ease.
This camera blows the Canon S5, the Sony H7/H9 and Panasonic FZ8 out of the water in terms of image quality and has the least amount of lens related issues (vignetting, barrel distortion, sun flare, etc.)
Have a look at the following reviews as a guide:

I owned this camera about 1 year ago, and it was one of the BEST cameras I have ever owned. Stereo video mode with zoom and image stabilization is incredible. Focusing is top notch, and the level of manual controls makes this a very attractive camera for the price. I was considering the S5 as a replacement, but the amount of noise in the images even at ISO80 killed it for me. The S3 takes cleaner images then the S5. If you can get this camera for this price, I would be all over it. You would be kicking yourself if you didn't take advantage of it.

This looks like a steal but I note that the Canon A640 seems to have better image quality (as reviewed by megapixel.net). Of course the S3 has a better zoom.
The A640 is also on clearance at Staples, currently at $199.99

I have had this camera since the Zellers sale back in January 2007 (I actually price matched to Sears). I have almost 1700 pictures and I am still loving this camera. I have been playing with taking videos since the summer and it is great. Overall an excellent camera.

On how this compare to other cameras, I read on Digital Photography School, a pro tip site about which P&Ss their reader use, and the results were S3 being #1 with more owners than all #2~#10 "combined". Sony H7/9 weren't even on the list - http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/top-10-point-and-shoot-digital-cameras-dps-reader-favorites/#more-582
The spec. from Sony/Panny looks close, but if you go and try to handle and use one yourself and there is no comparsion. The ergonomics is night and day, where the S3 feels like a mini-DSLR, the others feel like toys. Same with the performance and picture quaility, too. ie. If you have to zoom for a further shot, by the time you turn on the sony, let he zoom lens moved and camera focus, you would have already taken a few shots with an S3 already.

I bought this camera last year and it's an amazing camera :cheesygri
Then I discovered this site: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK
With a firmware hack (it's non-permanent... it's just a memory-resident hack) it gives the S3 the ability to save RAW files and a whole bunch of other functions not available with the normal firmware...
$228 is a very hot price for a great camera!

Well, I bought this camera when it first came out and sorry to say, I didn't take long for me to return it. Seriously, when automatice takes pictures at the highest ISO (800), it's really terrible. I'm glad I had bought it from a store where I could return it.
My suggestion, try it if you want, but do take pictures and have them printed, also make sure that you can return the camera if you don't like it.
Look for the picture that was taken with ISO 800, seriously very bad stuff:

Items are normally put on clearance when they have been superceded by newer models (e.g. S5) and stock is very low. Since the S3 was released quite some time ago, there are likely veryfew in stock anywhere.
Best to phone around, or ask for the help of your local Staples store. They may be able to track one down and have it shipped to your nearest location, if you ask nicely.

The S5 has both been rated by CNET and DPREVIEW as being lower then the S3. In fact, there were a few fellow RFD'ers who bought and returned the S5 because of image related issues.
If the S5 took images as well as the S3, and have a bigger LCD, i'd get it in a heartbeat (sale price or MSRP) because only then it would be worth the $$.

Do some research on latest replacement camera reviews and you will find that is common to find worst performance on many new models.
The problem is caused by manufacters continue practice to pack more pixels on the same sensor size, in hope to market the higher pixel sensor as "better".
See link for explaination on mega-pixel vs noise and check comparsion pictures under topics on side bar - http://www.6mpixel.org/en/

1Gb video limit is per file.
When you stop recording and start again, it's a new file.
Recording for 1gb continuously will probably take an hour or more.
Edit: Oopps. I'm sorry I was wrong, I was thinking it was the same as my other camera.
Canadiankorean is right, it will probably take only 10 mins for a 1gb to fill in with max out res.

1 GB is the largest video you can do in 1 session. When it reaches the 1GB mark, it stops recording and you then need to start it again for another 1 GB session. Again, this comes down to the intent of a camera. This is primary a digital camera, with fairly decent video quality.
I have tested this camera with a 4GB card and it does work. Having said that, I never put more then 2 GB on any card, so I suspect when you get to content past 2GB, there may be issues.

It does support "ultra high speed cards" whatever that means.
You mean regular sd or sdhc?
I don't think the s3 is sdhc compliant ... I don't know if the s3 is sdhc hackable ... I know that they have 3rd party RAW support for the s2 and probably for the s3 just to give an example for what's possible. There's a wiki page for this somewhere.
The firmware upgrade voids the warranty though so be careful.

I think that all SD cards above 2 GB are SDHC. So without SDHC, a camera becomes limited to a max size of 2GB card size.

But don't count on it for video, yes the quality is awesome but the compression SUCKS and a 10 secs vid takes like 10 megs.

Well that is because its uncompressed avi. I quite like it being that I can then compress it with my favourite codec the way I want to. Also, its a moot point since the primary function of this camera is to take stills. I don't think anyone reviews a camera based first on its video capabilities.
I am surprised that Staples still has this in stock. I remember I picked up the last model at my local staples, which was also on clearance, way back late-June, early July 2007. Back then I paid $299 (- 15% for being a display model (although seemed untouched to me) and that it was missing its quick start guide). It's a great camera and no regrets with it.
I believe it does support SDHC cards although I haven't used one it in so far.

I did NOT want to see the turbulence snatch the camera out of my hands. Of course it's no HD...but for an 'all-in-one'....pretty damn amazing.

But don't count on it for video, yes the quality is awesome but the compression SUCKS and a 10 secs vid takes like 10 megs.Really? I think you misinterpreted his post,
Ahzuz said the quality of video was awesome, just the file sizes suck because they're so large

Cool. My brother has some video taken out of a helicopter in Alaska taken with his Canon S2 and it is superb quality. The best one is taken out the front as they follow along a river. I hope the S3 can match what the S2 can do for video.

I've been phoning a lot of the Montreal and are stores (multiple times) but they almost never answer their phones... If anybody knows of a store with stock, please let me know.
Thanks!
And on a totally different note - 13,400 posts - WOW! That's one helluvan accomplishment!

Thanks a lot rinottawa and everyone for their wonderful reviews/opinions. I succeeded in getting the last one (in box) at Staples Bell Corners (Ottawa) for the $230 + taxes. I called several stores in the area, none has in stock, even the Bell Corners, but the sale associate there was very nice and went to the back to check if there is something left and discovered this last one. So I grabbed it (sort of). One of my best purchases with the helps of RFDers.:D :D :D
I also heard (check by computer from another store associate) that South Key Staples (Ottawa) has the demo left. Although an earlier phone call to that South Key indicating nothing left.

The guys at the Gare Centrale Staples were kind enough to check Montreal area stock and they pointed me in the direction of a demo unit which I picked @ the Place Dupuis location. They also mentioned that the Jean-Talon location in Saint-Leonard had 1 in stock but when I visited the store they weren't able to find it.
Except for a years' worth of fingerprints the demo unit seems fine. They made me a 'deal' where they took off $30 since it was a demo and charged $30 for an extended warranty. Given the unit seems fine I'll probably go get a refund on the service plan.

Actually, the guy I dealt with at Pointe Claire (on Sunday) was nice and said there weren't anymore in the system that he could see. I don't know, maybe he has to check store by store and didn't check all of them - there are quite a few in Montreal, such is life...

I just wanna clarify.....
1. does the s3 support one of those ultra high speed sd cards?
2. with regards to taking pictures, what's the biggest sd card that the s3 supports?
I'm using a 8GB SD card w/out any problems. Google it, and you'll find out which ones people have used that work. If I remember correctly, mine is from Patriot.

It was a rare opportunity to find a clearance demo unit this morning at the Richmond store in Vancouver. Along with the 10% demo discount and a $20 voucher from the teacher appreciation day, the final price is around $185 before taxes. Also picked up a 2 gb SD card from NCIX for $11. What a fantastic price for this camera. Thanks OP.
