Are used ipods on Ebay a good buy? Do the ipod batteries have limited lifespans, so that maybe the battery doesn't hold a charge very well, or the battery dies in a few weeks or months.
Any thoughts?

The main concern I'd have about used mp3 players would be battery life. Li-ion batteries lose their charge after use and you won't be able to get the full battery life on it.

what about older generation ipods sold as new. How the heck are there so many older generation NEW ipods out there?
I mean did these folks buy up old stock of ipods that weren't sold and then are turning around and selling them?
I am now considering new older generation ipods on ebay, but am a little hesitant, as how can one be sure that these sold as new ipods really are new?
I mean what or where were these older generation ipods, on someone's back shelf?

You can buy a like-new refurb from the Apple store, older generations cost less but still come with the full one-year warranty and the option to purchase an additional year of warranty.
I'd be wary of eBay for iPods, but you never know. Make sure the seller is 100% positive feedback-wise, and look for previous happy customers among the feedback for the exact item you want.
But if battery life isn't specifically guaranteed in the auction, you have no recourse if it arrives battery-dead. Look out also for equivocal battery info: if it doesn't state a minimum number of battery life hours, expect not too much.
