View Full Version : Tale of an Unlikely Romantic

I once dated a man that I felt balanced out my life. I'm outgoing, giggly, a girly girl to the core and some what of an unpredictable prankster, while he was serious, committed to work/responsibilities, and predictable.

About a week prior to Valentine's day, I received an envelope in my mail box addressed to me. Inside was a note but it wasn't hand-written, nor typed. It was put together using letters cut out of newspapers and magazines. I turned about four shades of crimson reading the details of what my "secret admirer" wanted to do with and to me if I dared to meet him. I didn't take the note seriously and tossed it aside, focusing on my bills.

The next day, another envelope graced my mail box, this time detailing a location and time. I was intrigued and annoyed that someone was playing such a prank, but had gone through so much trouble. I showed both notes to my boyfriend and he appeared angry, an emotion I had NEVER seen on him. He said he was going to the location to meet this creep and to ensure he wouldn't harass me like this in the future. I said that wasn't necessary, that we should just ignore the note; that he's probably not going to show up anyways. The boyfriend insisted. I insisted on going too but he kept saying he didn't want to put me in harm's way, that I should wait at home. I read him the riot act and called him a neanderthal, and again insisted that THE NOTES WERE ADDRESSED TO ME SO I AM DEFINITELY GOING!

So off we went to the specified location (a little restaurant downtown). There was a reservation under my name of all things! We waited and waited, no one showed up. Our server brought over a note and a bottle of champagne saying "someone dropped this off for you". I opened the note and it said to go over to the next location, which was the marina. So off we went, we were already close to there so why turn back now right? We got to the marina, and there was a boat rented for us. Now I was nervous, rightfully so. I said to my boyfriend, why would someone rent a boat and not be here? We don't even know where to take the boat. I refused to get on board. The person at the rental administration insisted there was "a package for you in the boat". I go over, there are two dozen lilac roses, and yes *sigh* another note. I agree with you, by now this was getting TRULY annoying! I tell my boyfriend we should contact the authorities, and he was investigating with the staff to question who was responsible. The administrator just raised his hands and said "I just started my shift, sorry man".

This next note sent us to the beach which was a short walk from the marina. There was a white tent set up, and since this was the middle of the week not to mention cold February, there wasn't really anyone else there. We walk over, and my boyfriend says to me like some knight in shining armour/hero, "babe, you wait out here, I want to make sure it's safe inside okay?" Fighting off the urge to burn my lace bra, I merely nod my head and agree with him, adding "okay, but please be careful!"

About two minutes go by but it seems like a lot longer, and he yells for me to get over, inside the tent. I run in and then music started playing *sigh*. The boyfriend was down on both knees with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. I was in utter shock and could hardly move, so he said in a low voice "come closer hun". I obliged, he put the bouquet down, and took my trembling hands in his. And these words I'll never forget, "I know that I'm not the most romantic guy on the planet, that I don't remember important dates, but I remember what you wore the first time we met and how I couldn't pry my eyes off of you. I promise to love you and maybe I won't always be like this, and maybe you'll be mad because I planned this out the way I did, but more than anything else in the world I want you to be my wife. You are my soulmate..." I didn't let him get the rest out and I sort of kick myself now, because I ask and he just goes, "you should've let me finish talking back then!" I just screamed yes!!! I will soooooooooooooo marry you!

After we were engaged, I did ask him why he planned such a proposal, and he said he wanted to be original and prove to me that he could be exciting too. He said he was glad I wasn't creeped out by it all because that wasn't his intention. In my books it was by far the MOST romantic thing he'd ever done, and I am pleased to report that we have been married for 10 and a half years. Oh don't worry, I got him back with a few "adventures" that I planned hehehe. Let's just say, the romance is alive and healthy in our relationship, and that was the best Valentine's Day of my life!

it's a great story...i'm just so amazed how you would go and do what the letter says considering you didn't know if the person was psycho or not...

That was a nice story.

Except, if I did that, my gf would know instantly it was me planning it out. It would sort of ruin the surprise. Did you really have no idea that your bf *may* have been the one behind all these mysterious things?

It wasn't a question about being smart or not...he just isn't the romantic type...my husband's a laboratory technologist not a NAVY SEAL lol. If you had a chance to meet him, you wouldn't have even thought for half a second he'd have gone through such great lengths. I am so glad he did though! As for the paragraphs thing, that was completely my fault. I have corrected that though. Thanks for your understanding kind critic ;)

Hi, I wasn't going to originally go, I hadn't given it more than a glance...well with the initial note! But with the second note, and the bf insisting on going, I thought there was just NO WAY he was getting to find out who the mystery sender was and I wasn't. It didn't even dawn on me that it was out of character for my "never jealous boyfriend" to insist on kicking some butt! I have to admit I was totally flattered and I wanted to solve the mystery too. In hindsight, I realize there were CLEAR AND BOLD signs that should have pointed to the bf, but like I said, if you have a chance to meet him you'd go "noooooooooooo!!! That was HIM???" lol.

Thank you so much for your comments!!! You're absolutely right about the "creepy factor". The bf explained that wasn't his intention but he wanted to be original. Since it was sooooooooo out of character for him, it was definitely romantic and not icky lol. I do advise men to avoid "creepy" and lean closer to "romantic" lol.

It sure was, wasn't it? He teases that I shouldn't expect him to top that. Considering 11 is my lucky number and it'll soon be our 11th wedding anniversary he just might surprise me. I figure I should plan something memorable...we shall see!

Awwwwwwwww Setell thank you so much for taking the time to read. You know that's the wicked cool thing about boyfriends...when you convince yourself he loves you even if he isn't Prince Charming, he does a 180 degree to prove that HE IS your half that makes you a whole. Wow that was mushy lol, but you get the gist.

Great read, how did u get him back?

Thank you CSR :)!!! I got him back a few times lol. The first time was the best because he didn't see it coming and it wasn't immediately after his proposal. I let some time go by. Anyways that's another story all together! I had a lot of help from family and friends to pull my "surprise" off. I didn't know a human being could turn that particular shade of beet red that he did when he figured out he was set up and by whom lol.
