Ok this is my first deal but I don't think it has been posted.
I was in Sam's Club last night for a few minutes doing a return and I noticed they have a 72" Samsung DLP (I think it's the HLT7288S) for $2491.00. I know people here aren't too crazy over DLPs these days but I thought it was a decent deal for a HUGE TV with great picture clarity and quality.

If this is their new LED DLP line then I can say it's a very nice TV. I have the 56 inch version and the blu ray on it is flawless. I have regular cable and it shows up nice so I can't comment on how HD looks on it.
Consumerreports rates the 56 inch version as the best LED DLP tv as well.

That seems pretty inexpensive for a 72" TV.
One thing I have heard is that for some, DLP can cause dizziness or headaches because of the spinning wheel flicker. This is one reason why I was considering the Sony SXRD 70" instead.

I have a 50" Panasonic DLP (for two years now) and on mine there is no flickering, HD on it is great, and still bright, and my XBox 360 shows very well too. I've been reading that LCD has basically taken the market share as far as HD TV's goes but I've been really impressed with my DLP and for this price I would definately consider this 72" TV. I can only imagine what Halo looks like on it.

My 2 cents? - I'd say stop wasting your money and if you REALLY want a BIG tv, go get yourself a projector! Costco.ca still has the BenQ MP620c DLP projector for $140 off. That's only $549.99 for an XGA (1024X768), 2000Lumens projector. Although the contrast ratio reads 700:1, I picked one of these up and the picture quality is amazing! I've owned a couple of rear projection sets in the past, one of which was a 48" Toshiba, and the picture doesn't even come close to the sheer size and quality of these projectors. Screens are only about $100 for a 100inch, and you can buy a ceiling mount for about $70 (Canada Computers). Add a couple of component of DVI cables and you're laughing! This is my second projector in 4 years and I wouldn't buy anything else. Plus, who's going to help you hall a 72" box home? Only negative thing though is that the lamp only lasts around 3000 hrs. I also have a 42" LCD, 1080P, so I use this only for movies and sports. Even if you were to use it for watching regular tv (I'm assuming in hidef), and for 4 hours/day, it'll still last you a couple of years before you need to change the bulb (around $400). Get the big picture?

The Samsung 72" does 1920x1080p.
Purchase the Samsung, get yourself a WinXP or Vista based HTPC running Windows Media Centre, watch HD-DVD/BluRay or OTA HD transmissions on the set, and as a bonus, use the Samsung as a computer monitor when your surfing the web. That's what I do on my 65" 1080p DLP based RPTV. Much more comfortable lounging around on the sofa with my feet kicked up on the coffee table when mindlessly surfing the forums.

Seems to me you're comparing apples to oranges. Although I agree that a projector at this price range would probably be a wiser investment, going super-cheap like you have wouldn't be the wisest choice, IMHO anyways.
The projector you have chosen is a business projector, with a 4:3 ratio, 1024x768 resolution, and a very limited number of connectivity options. The Samsung TV is 1080p, 16:9 and has a large amount of connectivity options.
The screen you mention I'm sure is adequate, but personally I wouldn't trust a projector from Ultra, but that's just my preference. Moreover, some people simply cannot set-up a projector-screen combination in their home. Granted, if you can fit this behemoth in your home, you can probably fit a projector-screen combination.
Alternatively, this combination provides a similar experience to Samsung TV, albeit no 1080p, unfortunately. It incorporates a projector, screen and all the other accessories you need:

The Optoma HD6800 Projector is almost identical to the HD72 projector (from what I understand) so the quality is top-notch. Here's a review of the HD72:

I guess it's not the newer LED-DLP. Anyway, I have a 52" Toshiba DLP for almost 3 years now, and I am very happy with it (lamp was change one time with warranty). If you have the room for this TV I say go for it, altough I am not sure about Samsung DLP. I will be looking at the newer LED-DLP models when they come out later this year.

Everyone seems to love LCD but if you want picture quality, LCD is the last choice you should go.
IMO for screens 40" and bigger - Plasma > DLP > LCD.
I've been to CES many year, comparing similar priced models, plasma still wins on quality. And with new plasma models coming in about 2" or less thick, it will win on size too.
I would never use LCD as my primary theater display. PC, fine. Normal viewing in Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or wherever you want one, fine. Current gen of LCD has nothing on plasma or DLP until LED backed LCD or OLED become norm.
As for front projection, yes it's the cheapest way (or only way) to get 70+ inch screens. But your room has to be perfectly setup and as dark as it can be for best possible picture. Also most low end projector hum like crazy in the same vicinity where you sit. So unless you have an isolated projector room to house the unit, it's going to drive you nuts.

Does anyone think this is any good? I'm thinking of getting this, or a 52" sony lcd, or a 58" sharp lcd. Are there any projector/screen(and everything else I need) that will be under 2 grand with everything that will do 1080p(for blu ray movies and ps3 gaming since I will be getting one soon)? But then, wont projectors look horrible in the day with all the light (bay window next to tv and probably at least one light on in the same room?
Any deals on an lcd tv over 50" for around $2000-$3000?

I think these "optimum" distances were needed for regular definition TV when sitting too close means you can see the pixels and thus an unclear picture. However, with 1080p HD, this shouldn't be an issue unless you're sitting 3 inches from the screen! Bottom line, IMO, is check the TV out yourself and experiment with different distances and determine what works best for you and don't rely on old general formulas which may not be applicable in your case.

That calculation is not correct. There is another calculator on the net (sorry i don't have the link) that said for a 65" 1080p tv that the optimal distance was a little under 10 feet. So, I would imagine that the optimal distance for a 72" is not more than 11 feeet.
I have a 65" tv and use it for two purposes: to playback HD material and to use it as a PC monitor. When driving it at 1920x1080x60hz, if I sit more than 10 feet away from it, text can be almost impossible to read because any further distance goes past the resolving capacity of your eye.

What if you want to watch TV in a brightly lit living room? A projector won't work well. I have a projector and the only time I can use it is after the sun sets or in the basement. And no, I don't want to change my living room curtains from white to a darker colour.
