Don't think it's a repost. Sorry in advance if I'm wrong.

Can be a great filler if you have to order some cables and stuff.

There's no real data transfer quality difference...it's fiber and digital so...

The difference is more on the toughness side.

Connected to what?

S-Vid is for video...SPDIF is for sound, 2 different things.

There's no advantage to connect a sound device to the little stereo speakers of the TV by digital.

No real advantage to connect your TV to sound system if you're watching stereo broadcasting...

The real advantage is using this with a surround sound system directly from a DVD player, PVR, PC or stuff like this. DVD players commonly use coax digital though.

Buying 3 seems to be the better deal (due to low(er) shipping rate on the 3rd one ... for some reason ...)

I have a satellite receiver with spdif and svideo. So I was going to connect my LCD TV to satelitte receiver using these 2 wires. Would this work okay?

Hey guys, can you enlighten me (i'm not much into audio like some of you are) but isn't the SPDIF acronym most used to identify a Digital Coaxial Cable while here we're talking about an Optical Fibre Cable more commonly known as a Toslink cable?!?

ummm I pretty sure SPDIF = Toslink and Coaxial

Edit: From Wiki

S/PDIF was developed from a standard used in the professional audio field, known as AES/EBU which is commonly used to interconnect professional audio equipment. S/PDIF remained identical at the protocol level, but changed the physical connectors from XLR to either electrical coaxial cable (with RCA jacks) or optical fibre (TOSLINK, i.e., EIAJ Optical), both of which cost less and are easier to use. The cable was also changed from 110 Ω balanced twisted pair to the already far more common (and therefore compatible and inexpensive) 75 Ω coaxial cable, using RCA jacks instead of the BNC connector which is common in commercial applications. S/PDIF is, for all intents and purposes, a consumer version of the AES/EBU format.

There are 79 ratings on the FS website for that cable. That's a lot of money wasted...

SPDIF is commonly used to specify Toslink.

But yes, the proper term here is Toslink cable.

ride365
Feb 5th, 2008, 11:53 PM
SPDIF is NOT toslink. Toslink is optical and has a square looking end that transmits singals via a laser looking signal. SPDIF is Coaxial and has a cable that looks similar to any component or composite cable end. Most people has SPDIF on the Digital Cable terminal. Toslink is a term coined by toshiba hense "toshibalink=toslink". The cable in the original post is not the one linked to FS or the one people are discussing.

Wrong...S/PDIF is a protocol...Digital Coax & optical fiber cable (Toslink) are both on SPDIF standard.

The S/PDIF term is commonly, even if it's not really true, used to talk about Toslink connection cable.

So, you're kinda right...SPDIF is NOT Toslink but Toslink is SPDIF.

If you have fun playing on words...

And what are you talking about in your last sentence?! The Monster Cable @ FS & the Toslink @ Monoprice are both Toslink/SPDIF/Optical Fiber (or whatever the name you want me to use).

I bought a few the last time around (for $2.5 or something, they were never $9.99 IIRC)...the prices at mono are low everyday, doing a group buy would make it warm/hot.

I suggest while you're at it...pick up an optical coupler or a 3-in-1 optical switch if you have say a set of Z-5500 that takes only one optical input.

Agreed +1.

I understand what you are saying but most people are talking about the digital optical cable when if fact the monoprice link is a digital coaxial cable. When I think of SPDIF i think coaxial cable. If you look on all motorola DCT's the SPDIF port is coaxial and digital optical is a seperate port.

OK dude, stop arguing for nothing.

What "you think" doesn't really matter here.

The fact is very simple: both the Coax & Toslink gigital cable are S/PDIF. Period!

So I said "SPDIF cable @ 1.64$" and it's true, the cable in my link is a Toslink optical fiber cable, at SPDIF standard.

More than this fact, search around and you'll find that SPDIF is commonly use to talk about Toslink more than about Coax digital.

Finally, here's the cable linked:
http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/14192.jpg

Does it really look like a coax like you said or a Toslink?!

Come on...

I just got three of these exact ones from a local supplier, they are a nice product. Though, some have complained that the spacing on back of some receivers wont fit properly.

Do you mean SATA data cable?! Or power adapter?

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/cooldrives/ultraflex-sata-cable-2.jpg

Man...I have plenty of these data cables.

Just send me a couple of post stamps and I'll send you a letter size envelope full of cables.

4 regular stamps should work I imagine...

Edit: according to Canada Post website, it's 2,65 $ for a big envelope from 200g to 500g so I think I'd be able to send you something like 12 cables.

PM me.

I'm with you on this. When I ask if a mobo has SPDIF I'm asking about coax. Maybe I'm just showing my age. TOSLINK made such a fuss when it came out to distance itself from anything to do with wires, and oh so superior/snobby/bleeding edge (think about how Monster Cable markets itself) that it never mentioned S/PDIF anywhere. S/PDIF was left to the coax crowd who obviously could tolerate the garbage signal from mere wires (smirk). Even Monoprice has S/PDIF in the name of all the coax wire, and TOSLink in the name all the fibre optic. Oh, even better use their search function and see how many optical cables come up when searching SPDIF. You're not crazy.

Anyway, good price on an optical SPDIF there.

I ordered 4 diff. cables and it comes within 10 days as a US parcel, not bad. Good package, good quality, no tax (GSP & PST), and the shipping cost is resonable.

I think those $100+ Moster HDMI cable are highway robbery. For those digital cables, you will either have signal or no signal. So it does not matter if you pay $100+ or $4 for the DIGITAL cable, the result is the same.
