2yrs ago when I bought this laptop, it was $150 for a 1GB DDR2 PC4200 stick. Now? I just picked up the same kind (Kingston) for $35! How come its so cheap now and fallen in prices so drastically? Even FS/BB sells them for 1/3 the price than they did before.

DDR is just much more expensive than DDR2. It's like all things; the cost of production just goes down over time.

since dell doesnt void your warranty if you add a new hard drive or more ram sticks, i plan to buy a laptop off dell soon with the lowest ram specs. because common, 1gb to 2gb upgrade is 100 bucks? you gotta be shitting me -_-

I dont get why DDR2 is cheaper than DDR  >:(
I wouldve assumed it'll be at least the same, if not more expensive, as it's the newer technology...

No longer any demand for DDR. As such production has slowed, and prices have increased.

Computer memory is for all intents and purposes, a commodity. It's price varies mainly on supply and demand.

yep, if you own a ddr2 desktop or laptop then theres no reason not to have at least 2gb of ram.

Multiple variables could affect reasons why latter technology is cheaper.
One reason is because, not only are products designed to be better, they are designed to be more cost-efficient in terms of production.
Change in location of production (child labour anyone?) can also be another reason. Outsourcing is very common and most businesses can't afford to open up a firm outside of their country until they are financially stable.
