Hi all, does anyone know of an authorized Canon dealer that has the G9 in stock at a price of around $499? I need to price-match against Best Buy since I have a gift card from there. Thanks!

Thanks for all of info, you two. It turns out that BB will only price-match with "local" stores that have it in stock. So, out of the question that they will price-match with The Camera Store.
The only good thing is that I can wait ...

I've seen Aden Camera sell it for as low as $489, but right now it looks like they're back up to $549. I'd wait until it is on sale again.
I'm going to pick one up later this year when the price drops.

To answer your question - I'd just say you have to wait for sales. I looked for a g7 and g9 for quite a while and even when the g9 came out, the g7 only dropped 70 bucks. Lower price cameras don't seem to go on huge sales, just gradual price reduction.
I don't quite understand why people get G9s. They are a compromise between SLR and compact and if you can't have superb image quality while losing portability, what's the point? The g9 still has crappy noise reduction, it's slightly better than most P&S's. And you pay a premium for that, the build and maybe some image quality. I owned a g7 and it just wasn't satisfying for 550 dollars.
I paid 450 for a used 20D + 50 for a kit lens and I am absolutely blown away. This said, I do have a 5 year old Canon A20 as my p&s but it isn't really compact, its close to the size of the g9.

You haven't seen any sample pictures from this camera then. They're superb.

The thing is, I could easily buy one of the Canon A-series cameras but, as you said, the A-series is almost as big as the size of the G9 so why not just pony up a bit more for the G9? And you get a ton of control over your pics along with the quality of the shots.

The G9 is as close as an "SLR" as a P&S can get. Is there any other camera that can shoot RAW?
I personally think it's a very ugly looking camera. But I love the image quality, the features and most of all, RAW format.
I wouldn't have minded if they would have kept the CF Cards from the G6, but that's not a big issue with the new SDHC cards. The next Rebel will be SDHC.
