Does anyone have any suggestions where to get a chipped windshield repaired in the Scarborough area? The chip is quite small, <5mm in diameter... Will it lead to a crack or what?

I got it done by a guy who works out of the Crappy tire at McCownan and Sheppard a few weeks ago. Cost was 40 bucks. Now I just noticed another:

get it fixed immediately! i regret i didn't get mine fix....
better yet, call your broker first and ask for advice...
cuz i j/ found out that my insurance company will cover 100% for
any stone chip windshield damages. my insurnace company rather
pay the "X" amount of chips than replacin' a whole windshield....
what i was adviced is that, get it fix @ apple auto glass or speedy,
while @ the counter, call my glass claim 1-800 #, notify
them, get authorization for the fix....and i won't have to pay a cent.
and will not be recorded too!
correct me if i'm wrong~

Get it fixed right away, especially with spring coming with the cold in the morning to warming in the afternoon or even the heater on will cause it to expand.
TAKE CARE! AND GET IT FIXED!!!

Yeah a lot of people seem to say get these thing fixed right away but I've had a very different experience with laminated glass and stone chips. I actually have three stone chips in my windshield and they have been there for years.
The first one, I got "repaired" right away--it was like $25 or some such to repair. However after the repair I could still see it and though it looked better it really didn't seem much different to me. Then I got two more over time and I just left them because I figured if the "fix" doesn't look much better why bother. Anyway yeah been there for years, never spread anywhere or got any worse. I could have had them "repaired" but then I didn't lol.
As for the insurance comment, that's what I've heard/seen too. A lot of policies cover stone chips fully and you don't even have to pay a thing. Depends on your policy though, so you'll have to check w/your company. There's even the little "tents" at most Canadian Tires (though they don't seem very active in the winter time) that do windsheild repairs while you're in the store shopping. It's not hard to find a place that does these repairs; though how necessary they are is another story.

He's a retired Apple Auto Glass guy working out of his garage. He does have a registered company and you get a full receipt with taxes included in his quoted prices.

Oh they are very active during the winter. You didnt actually think the guy would be fixing it out there in the cold????....He takes it into CT and fixes it in their service area.

I just done a chipped windshield repair at Apple Auto glass at Scarborough Brimley location http://www.appleautoglass.com/Main/full.asp?id=91.
They are pretty busy so best call before you go, repair took about 45 minutes. Ask your insurance compnay as mine is covered in the auto insurance policy. My car is new so I don't want to take a chance, my other car has some chipped spots for several years no issue at all.

I'd avoid this location. A fellow RFD'er got his windshield chip fixed here and they did a piss poor job. Then they tried to overcharge him with a windshield replacement.
I would rather go to Ron then someone who just wants to screw you into getting a windshield replaced and gouged.

WOW! Where does my tax money go? I just got a chip driving on 401E C near McCowan. If anyone is familiar with that area, you know its definitely the city's negligence!
A repair will only PREVENT a chip from spreading. It will not fix how it looks.

recently i got a chip also and it develops into a crack in a matter of 30 mins...
went to check out the chip/crack repair place outside crappy tire, and the guy said it will be $80 with 1 yr warranty. Of course they can't repair the crack so it will stay there.
He said all he does (in his exact word), drill a hole where the chip is, suck out the air and put glue/sealant to fill the hole. I don't understand why the crack will not grow by using this method but he assures me that it won't, within 1 yr.
I don't really want to come back after 1 yr so I replaced my whole windshield for a pretty reasonable $240, and it's done within an hour.....no need to stay in shop for a week (dealership) or 3 days (Apple)
just want to share my experience....

Holy ShT! That's exactly where I just got a stone chip 2 days ago.
The guy at "Auto Glass Canada" says he'll charge me 75 bucks if i pay cash, or full taxes if I pay credit card. I mentioned the 15% off coupon from their website, but he said that was the same as the cash discount, and wouldn't give me 15% off of the credit card price. Sounds fishy. But he says it's warranteed and that I'd get a receipt even if I pay cash.

Yeah! I was hit by a large stone about a month ago. Caused a crack, the size of a dime! Still didn't get it fixed yet. Hasn't spread either.
It was terrible, the city now scraped up all the crap. It's better but I try to avoid it by going to the express. I get pounded by stones everyday on that particular stretch. My hood has paint chips all over the place! Dammit!

In my experience, they either develop into a crack in a short time, or stay as a stable chip for years. I've had quite a few chips in my various cars and only one cracked about two weeks after the chip.

I got two tiny stone chips in my windshield the first week of owning the car. I took it to the tent outside my local Canadian Tire. The guy drilled the small hole, sucked out the air, injected the filler stuff and I was on my way in under an hour. It has since been about 11 months and it has been perfect. I was worried that during winter with the constant freezing and thawing it would expand but it held up no problem.
Of course I can still see the two minute chips, but that was expected. The guy charged me $40 and said it was a lifetime warranty (for as long as I own the car anyways).

Is that where the top layer of the road has been taken off for "future repairs"?
CTV was talking about an area that's been causing problems and the local councillor has over 300 letters / complaints about the road. He's pretty sick and tired of it as well, since the government hasn't come and finish the job.
I know there's a lot of nasty areas on the highway, that's for sure.

Alright we were quoted $347 is we paid it ourselves with Speedy Glass. If we went through our insurance where our deductible is $300, they first said they will do it if we pay $190 and then came back with $150 when we offered $100. Does that sound reasonable or can it be lower?

Having recently gone through this process and doing the research, I came across Auto Glass Worx (http://www.autoglassworx.com/) from another thread on RFD. Auto Glass Worx does the windshield replacements for many dealers including Budds' BMW. Spoke with Ken who was very knowledgeable (explained the process and all the primer and adhesives) and decided to go with them to do the replacement. I wanted someone who really knew their stuff after reading horror stories about ruining the frame and messy jobs.
They did a very clean and professional job and you would never know it was replaced. We bought our own glass from the dealer and brought it to him to install for $125. He has St. Gobain Sekurit glass but was like the same or a little more than the actual windshield from the dealer so that's why we went with that.

I repaired my windshield 3 months ago using the Permatex repair kit from Canadian Tire. The chip is still ~50% visible but the crack didn't expand at all.
For people short on money not wanting to to risk premium increases (because it happened in the past), I think it's a good quick fix.

It took 5 months for my crack to start progressing after a professional repair. It's 5 additional months I got out of the windshield.
