View Full Version : Nikon D40 - Warranty 1yr or 2yrs?

Just got my Nikon D40 with kit lens from Henrys and the enclosed card ("Dealers Record" it says) says the warranty is One Year. I thought these came with a two year warranty in Canada? Also, I thought the kit lens would be in the same box as the camera but they were separate packages. Blacks kept telling me they were in the same box and couldn't be sold separately.

Two years in Canada for the body and 5 years for the lens.

Thanks. Anyway, the card makes it confusing. Also, I guess I didn't get the kit but the camera and lens as separate items, not what I expected but I guess its okay. Something I meant to ask them about the warranty, I can send all warranty through them right? Don't want to deal with the manufacturers.

it's normal. i picked up the kit also this weekend and they are seprate but in a larger box together. but lense and camera each have there own box.

There was a plan brown shipping box and inside that was a commercial box for the D40 and another commercial box for the lens. They were not in a "kit" box. Then, I may not have asked the guy for "the kit" but the camera with the kit lens. So I guess they're open to send it either way.

Is that a box at the bottom? Mine came with the two boxes at the top, not what is below that.

yeah. the two box's on top, came inside that box at the bottom.

Well, everything is fine unless mine started out in the kit box. I found the answer to my first question when I actually looked at the camera box, it has a large "two year warranty" sticker on it. Wonder how you tell if what you have was part of a kit or are meant to be sold separately? Each of your boxes have a serial number on them?

yeah each box has a serial number, each box also has one of those warranty cards. I think they just grab a lens and camera and throw it in a kit box at the factory or something. Don't seem to be much different from you expect my box is fancier basicly. :)

I the suspicious sort, this doesn't help. I'll be checking the activations tomorrow to insure I got what I paid for (a spanking new camera). Thought I posted this thread in the photography forum?

no it's in comp & electronic's, maybe a mod can move it. :) anyways hope all turns out fine, i am sure it will. My guess is maybe the store is out of kits, since the d40 will be discontinued, so maybe they are making there own kits till they get rid of all there d40's. No harm done if that is the case. As long as everything is new.

Nikon products must be purchased from an authorized Nikon Canada Inc. dealer and serviced in Canada to be eligible for the warranty program.

Did you read my OP? I was referring to the "dealers card" I found inside the box that stated a one year warranty.

I don't understand why you don't want to deal with the manufacturers unless you can't get to them during the normal business hours.

The retailer will send the product to the manufacturer or their authorized service depot. So, it ends up there anyway. The retailer rarely will handle the warranty claim themselves.

Positives with dealing with the manufacturer or the service depot directly:
1. typically faster turn around - no courier time and most places will deal with walk in customers before retailers
2. better communications - you might be able to talk directly to the tech doing the work. You can often better explain or show the problem to the tech than the retailer can in words. The tech can ask questions if he doesn't understand what the problem is.

The dealers card comes packaged from the factory. Each country has the option of either doing the standard 1 year P+L or doing something different. Luckily for us, Nikon Canada is adding additional years to the warranty. In the US, it's a 1 year P+L for camera bodies.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that bought this camera this weekend. Mine came in that fancy black box and the two brown boxes inside.

I bought mine from blacks cause of their 60 day price guarantee and they take care of manufacturer RMA's so its less hassle for me.

How much did you get it for btw?

Camera + lens kit are suppose to come in the kit-box. Most smaller retailer don't buy kits and offer you the flexibility to choose whatever lens you want. Some retailer will choose to break up the kit when someone just wants the lens or the body.

It doesn't makes a difference, in terms of warranty. So who cares!

Yes, I did read it, and it makes no difference so long as you bought from a legit authorized Canadian dealer. 2 years body, 5 years lens. It even shows that on the boxes themselves, though that still does not seem to be enough proof for your own peace of mind?

got mine for 495$ plus tax. could have probably saved a few bucks more but, i am impatient at times :)

I don't want to deal with manufactures because of my experience with Canon where they lost my lens then refused to take my calls (or even let me know they lost the lens). It then becomes the retailers problem and I'll actually get to talk to a real person.

Got my D40 at FS last year, came in that black kit box shown above, and 2 gold box inside. I dont' think it matters with warranty since each product has their own warranty card.

Lens 5 yrs, body 2 yrs in Canada.

Price matched with Blacks (which was $499), GST sale and free shipping. They tried to backout when they called for my CC, but I'd already been given a quoted price (from the same guy who left a note on the order to give me either the GST sale or the PM!).

Was it actually Canon or an authorized service center? Two different situations. Besides a good manufacturer or retailer will only take in enough equipment so that they can fix the problem. They should mark down exactly what they received w/ the serial numbers and give you a copy of that as a claim tag.

It was mailed to the Calgary service centre per Canon's instructions. I called to confirm it arrived, and that was the last I heard from them until I started calling a month later and leaving many unanswered messages. I have no intention of going through that again. I want to be able to walk in and bunch our someone's lights if they ever treat me like that again.

Ahhh.... That's why I never mail anything in for repair if I can help it. I will take it in to the service centre myself or have the retailer do it. But my preference is the service centre first.
